Hey guys, i need to find out the proper chemical equation of taking dry ice, and acetone and combining it using a synthesis equation. I know that dice is CO2 and that acetone is CH3COCH3. What would be the byproducts of these two substances combined in an equation?

Any suggestions?

Not sure why you want an exact equation, but I can't give it to you.

But I can tell you that you don't want to breath that stuff very much. After a few minutes you will feel it in your lungs if there is not enough ventilation.

NVM, my C in CO2 doesn't respect the octet rule. It could have a formal charge, but it makes my model less plausible. Damn you chemistry!

Well i want a nice equation that obeys all of the laws to show to my dad :P

He thinks Dice and pc = boom :P


and i want to prove to him that it reacts to transfer the heat away from the pot :P

There is no reaction.
The dry ice is simply changing states back to gas, and is cold.
The acetone just acts as a liquid state transfer agent. Improving surface area. It is used instead of water because it won't freeze to solid at dry ice temperatures.

Well if it helps any, I did a 4 hour DICE run in my kitchen with my family and kids home. There is really no way for this to go boom, unless you smoke while pouring acetone

The acetone acts as a filler to remove air, because air has poor thermal properties. And acetone has a low freezing point so it works very well for DICE application. I tried some isopropyl and it got really thick, same with finger nail polish remover.

Acetone + DICE = Safe in a well ventilated room

Dimethyl Ether + DICE = Dangerous (storing it is more dangerous though) but will yield better temperatures due to the low boiling point of Dimethyl Ether (solvent).

I just use a 4" foil dryer vent tube with a 80mm fan in it about 4" from the end closest to the pot and the other end going out a window and I can't smell fumes at all. I just always turn the fan on before I start pouring acetone in case the fan would spark on start up and flash the fumes or something.

Works pretty well and the zip tube is only $4 or $5.
