Ok so I wanted to start bench runs but I was a little iffy about the cost of a dice pot alone and if it would be worth it, so I decide to make one on the cheap. Here it is so far.
![]() The dice pot, made with a copper pipe fixture and the base is copper sheet metal soldered to the base. ![]() Extremely thin after 1500 grit lapping, like less than 1mm, it's a mirror shine but there was crap on it so it's not so nice. ![]() Inside of the pot, not so nice. There were stampings on the sheet metal and black stuff left from the blow torch. ![]() 1500 Grit lapped Core 2 Duo CPU. (dice run on this) Cost. 400 - 600 - 800 - 1000 - 1500 Girt Sand Paper: $5 Blow Torch w/ Gas: $10 Copper Pipe Fixture: $5 Copper Sheet Metal: $5 Insulation Foam: $5 (not shown because I don't have a big pipe to mount the base in yet) Total Cost so far: $30 USD. Things left to do: Make a mount and mount a funnel pipe in the base For the mount im going to take a few metal rods lying around, a piece of wood and an old CPU cooler blackplate + some nuts & bolts. Only thing I have a hard time deciding is what to make the funnel pipe out of. You know that big pipe that sticks out where you poor acetone in w/ dice. I was thinking of a small PVC pipe to fit nice and snug in the base but I have concerned that it might crack under the cool temperature of dice but I seen some pro made pots that have a nice copper base with a PVC funnel pipe. Should I go with a simple PVC pipe or go out of my way again, buy a big (and probably expensive) copper pipe and have to solder it to the base?

you know its not going to work well right, you dont want a thin base. when you mount it, its just going to bow from the pressure and not make contact with the CPU very well, you need a more think base so its rigid and not flimsy.

That's what I thought but this one does not "bow" its very tight and does not "cave in" in any way.

once it gets cold, it will contract and pull up on you. yes it will work, but you will not get what you should be getting if you had a thicker base.

I could always find a way to reinforce it if it gave way. Anyway anybody have recommendations about what I should use for the funnel pipe?

Well, for the base, it needs thickness for a couple reasons. 1) to keep from bowing and "pulling up" as G|F.E.A.D|Killa said. 2) The more mass you have there the better your temps will be.
So, a good suggestion that worked well for someone here was to put a small handfull of BB's (1\2" at bottom of pot) and solder them in with a bunch of solder. And as for a funnel pipe, I just use the top of a gatorade bottle ![]() But I have also seen people make them from sheetmetal, or wide mouth metal funnel slightly modded.

Is it safe to use any plastic though or would it crack and leak rubbing alcohol all over my mobo.
