Here's what I did: got rid of the wife, now I buy whatever I want. Problem solved.

Hasn't been a problem so far.

But to be honest, she never really minds if I get something spendy as long as I actually use it on a regular basis. Purchases that sit around gathering dust make her mad.
I agree 100% perfect!

Well this is what I do... (or did when I got my i7)

1. Make sure you can afford what you are getting. Nothing sucks like getting something without talking it over and realizing it was a huge mistake when bills come in (I did this with my TV....I'm still hearing about that one 3 years later)

2. Buy things that are easy to hide. Of course this doesn't work in this case, but for me, I bought all internal components. She has no idea what is under the hood, and as long as I keep the bios splash screen disabled, she will never have any idea that my computer isn't the same one that I built while we were still dating.

3. Have said items shipped to a friends house, or make allowances for them to be picked up.

4. Un-box/assemble when the wife is away. I do not work on Mondays, but my wife has 8 hours. This gives me ample time to do everything I need to. If in doubt, allow her to go out with friends, or call in sick (with pay ofc) so you can do this without her knowing.

5. Discard the old boxes and replace them with the new one in the stash you have in the spare bedroom. She never looks in there anyway because she is tired of it being filled with "computer crap" anyway.

Wash, Rinse Repeat.

wow those are all exactly the things I do, except its my mom/dad, I still live at home, just turned 21, going to school, but I always make sure to buy things so that I know they will either get her thursday or friday, I was home from school early those days but now in summer time am home most of the day. She never even knew I built this PC, she just noticed the different case, heck, they dont even know I have water cooling in it, I just told her the lines were to redirect air

As far as boxes, I make sure to either cut them up and stash em under my mattress, or discard boxes that I dont think Ill need for later shipping. A few times I had boxes shipped to friends, like the Antec case and box for my mobo/cpu/ram, the case I brought home out of the boxc already and just made sure no one was gonna be home
