Default DICEing GPU's with stock coolers?

This idea has probably been tried and abandoned. Or even been abandoned without trying. But here goes.

Not wanting to throw down the cash for a bunch of LN2 GPU pots, or even water blocks, I've been toying with ways to get subambient temps with stock coolers.

Is this plausible?:

Take a big strainer of DICE and place it in a cheap styrofoam cooler. Cut out vents at the base of the cooler. Vent an air hose through the top of the cooler that's hooked up to a shroud you've rigged up that incorporates the GPU fan intakes. Now you've provided subfreezing air to the stock cooler.

Condensation might be a big problem on the cards/fan. And you'd go through gobs of DICE for a session.

Feasible? It would be cheap and reusable on any GPU.

Edit: Oops. This probably should have been put under "Cooling Experiments".

Well, yes, but you wouldn't get the temps that you are assuming you would.

People don't use DICE because it has some "magical" properties (well, maybe latent heat, but you're not ready for that discussion yet). They use it because it's the only thing you can buy in pound quantities that comes already at -80°C

Sufice it to say you could use 2 pounds of beef at -80°C in a DICE pot and get about the same cooling as you would from 2 pounds of dry ice.

You also assune, incorrectly, that the sublimed CO2 will be at -80°C when it hits the fan.

I don't expect -80 temps, just subambient. For me this weekend there was a >110 degree difference between -80 and ambient.

Maybe my post wasn't clear, but I certainly don't expect -80 by just blowing cold air. And please be less cavalier about assuming the scientific knowledge level of a poster.

It is very plausible, and even works to the extent that you are looking for. If rigged properly to pull enough cold air from the DICE and move it to the desired, crucial area, you will receive sub ambient temps.

One small problem you may have, is DICE, when sitting together and sublimating will form an air tight seal. So you need to be sure that there is enough air holes in the DICE to provide the flow.

It's been a long day and I hope that all that made sense
I have done this before with my WC radiator, and I can say that if implemented properly it will work.

Perhaps, removing the stock fan on the stock CPU cooler and fabricating walls and simply inserting the Dry Ice on it would do the trick.... Dry Ice on it's own can be pretty cold
