Default What all do i need?

Hey guys, im planning on getting into LN2 fairly soon, and i was wondering what all do i need?

I was planning on skipping the 30L container and just put it strait from the 160L into the thermos.

so what all do i need?

just the ln2, 160L tank, and the cryogenic tube?

25-35l dewar - fine for most non-professional overclockers
ANd proper pot depends on what are you going to cool Cpu pot, gpu pot (pots) etc.

Well of course the pot.

But do i really need the 25L dewar?

The guy at "airgas" said i could just pur it directly from the 160L into the 1L thermos.

What do i need to transfer it to the smaller containers?

160l container is very expensive. Usually people fill ~30l dewar and then pour ln2 directly into thermos at home

yes - I would recommend this as GL with pouring from a 160l container - you would need a withdraw device that woudl be fairly costly...

but i must ask - do you have DICE experience yet... I think its best for those getting into LN2 to cut their teeth on DICE as insulation and other stuff are learned...

I dont have dice exp. yet but i do have phase change expierience.

And i was planning on renting the 160L tank because i can rent it from airgas for like $10 a month.

And that is th only container that airgas rents.

Just rent the 160L container. Those are pressurized containers and it will have a transfer device/hose so you can just fill your thermos. You will not need to tip it and pour. They weigh 100+lbs empty.

The suggestions so far have been on the assumption you're buying a dewar to take in yourself for filling. In which case it would be crazy to leap in and buy an extraordinarily expensive and heavy 160L container.

DICE isn't necessary to do first, but it is advisable since it's cheap and will give you some insulation practice.

Aside from the pot and insulation, I'd advise getting some nail polish (great way to involve your wife/girlfriend in your endeavor - have her pick the color) to protect your mobo from condensation and have some styrofoam or paper cups handy to make an impromptu funnel. A paper plate works in a pinch - cut a hole in the middle and roll it into a funnel.

Are you sure that the 160L tanks come with a cryogenic hose...etc?

because i asked the the guy at airgas about buying LN2 and he said you would need a cryogenic tube and some kind of pump (cant remember exactly what kind of pump)

No, I can't be sure what they would provide you with the rented tank. They are probably not used to some guy renting an LN2 tank to freeze CPU's. A hose and pump he is referring to would be absolutely necessary if you were transferring the LN2 from the rented tank to another pressurized dewar directly.

Ask them if they provide an adapter to transfer LN2 into an open vessel (thermos). If the rented tank does not come with a hose or some form of phase separater, then you would need one. Otherwise you'd open the valve and the pressurized LN2 would just spray horizontally across the room.

Hoses/phase separaters are expensive in their own right and you'd be better off just buying your own 25-50L dewar off ebay.

Wich will ring up about $200.

Thanks for the reply.

And bartx, how much would you charge for a ln2/dice pot?
