Hey guys, first post here.

Well I am a little confused, as my 7800gt I have owned for over 3 years now, is spiking during gameplay. The interesting part is it was never a problem untill very recently.

About one year ago I had to ditch the stock cooler fan and retrofit a fan over the hole, which actually worked very well. Recently I have noticed a huge spike in temperatures, to 50C unloaded, and 90C (peak, 80C avg) during load. This is at stock clock speeds. I have had this card overclocked before, and never before have I run into temperature problems that actually caused the game to artifact so badly I could not even see to quit the game.

The second I alt-tab the temps drop to 60C's almost instantly.

There is no obstruction blocking the copper heatsink. Case temps are 85deg F.

Any advice? Is it possible the stock thermal past under the heatsink has degraded? I have no idea why the card is acting this way right now.

Thanks,

Im moving all the PCs in the house, parents desktop, downstairs laptop, my rig and my G50 notebook, to Windows 7. I want to keep the last backup of all these PCs running vista just incase. Then store these on a CD/DVD. I have gone through for downstairs laptop and set the WHS to remove all except the latest one.

Does this method remove all info associated with previous backups? Is there a better way to manage the backups and is there away to move the ones I want to keep off for storage?

Thanks in adance.

 ATI reveals Radeon 5970 overlocking details

ATI has revealed a critical engineering decision that led to the successful production of its Radeon HD 5970 graphics card.

"When we were first designing the 5970, we came to a crossroads surrounding the board's power consumption. We had two major options available to us," explained Hemlock product manager Devon Nekechuk.

ATI reveals Radeon 5970 overlocking details

"On one hand, we could cap ourselves at 300W and stay within the PCI Express specification. In doing so, we would stay compatible with the majority of the high-end power supplies in the market with 6-pin and 8-pin power connectors. On the other hand, we had the potential to fill a 400W power budget with performance, so we were considering using two 8-pin connectors and pushing this thing to its limits."

Ultimately, the team chose a hybrid approach by selecting a 6-pin + 8-pin power connector and using the components from the 400W board design.

"We squeezed as much performance as we could out of the 300W and left all the rest of the headroom as overclocking potential for you [overclockers]," said Nekechuk.

"It's kind of like our Black Edition CPUs, where the premium chips are picked and shipped with unlocked multipliers so that you guys can overclock the @#$* out of them."
The under-clocking reason for the 5970 was obvious to some but confusing to many. Hope this article sheds some light on the issue for those still upset with AMD for how they designed the 5970.

(I asked this in another forum but no answers, I've searched the web too and nothing really substantial about it.)
I'm looking for information about shared video memory used by windows. I remember using a mobo with an IGP and in the bios you could select how much of the system ram to use for it. My question is:

Does the Shared system momory (1279 MB) use the system ram or the page file?

If the page file is used that doesn't seem very efficiant. So if thats true is there a way to make the shared video memory use the system ram?

I know this is a specific question, but does anyone know if the buttons on the performance MX are "normal" analog buttons? Meaning if I hold down any of the buttons, does it send a continuous signal, not just a single signal like my MX 1100 does? This was very annoying for me to find out, since I can't bind the side ones to do anything useful, but other than that I love the 1100, especially the fly/click scrollwheel. I'm a "finger holder" so I prefer the big mice. If it does have analog buttons, I will be asking for the performance MX for Xmas. Haven't found anything in the reviews.

This isn't a wired vs wireless debate. I prefer wireless, the end, so please stick to the topic.

So while I was abroad in China for a month and a half during the summer, I had brought my AA1 netbook with me (Ubuntu 9.04 installed). On one of the last days while I was at a hotel, I decided to boot it up to watch some videos I had saved on there before I left. When I booted it up, I noticed the fan wasn't on and my fear was confirmed when the machine shut down shortly after POST.

Since this happened back in mid-July and I put off to the side until now, the one year warranty has already expired. I don't have the money for a new one and I would really like to get mines back in working order.

Does anyone here know if it would be possible to replace the CPU fansink? Can anyone point me to to a good guide (with pictures) for disassembly? Also where could I find the right fansink for the netbook?

Seems I can't get Northern Strike to run. BF2142 runs without any problems but when I try joining a NS map it gives me the "unmodified content, revert your version...." message. BF2142 was installed off a CD but Northern Strike was downloaded through EA Link. Here are the install possibilities I already tried:

Battlefield 2142 -> 1.50 Patch -> Northern Strike
Battlefield 2142 -> 1.50 Patch -> Northern Strike -> 1.50 Patch

I have the 1.40 and 1.40 to 1.50 patch downloaded but for some reason the 1.40 patch won't run. It seems like it wants to, it shows up in the task manager but then disappears and the installer never actually starts.
So, we're looking to upgrade. I've heard the latest cards will work in the slots, but will be limited in bandwidth to the older non PCIe 2.0 bandwidth. (250 MB/sec versus the newer 500 MB/sec 2.0 standard)

Any recommendations? I can't seem to find much of anything benchmarking newer NVidia cards on older rigs.

I only get 100fps looking in the skies , but i did notice it was staying around 50-75fps walking around. Drops to around 30 or so when fighting. This is insane. I can wonder what i would get in dx9. :eek::eek::eek:
It runs smooth , and looks insane seriously.

115-140fps(it did hit 140 once)

40-60fps(avg around 55)

Resolution 1280x1024, AAX2, The settings which are on very high are Textures, objects, water, particles and game effects. Everything else is on high settings, shadows high, sound on low and post on high and volumetic on high.

I will do some more later. This is amazing tho, i never seen crysis move or look this good before. Even with my 4670, it didn't look this good.
