Well I am a little confused, as my 7800gt I have owned for over 3 years now, is spiking during gameplay. The interesting part is it was never a problem untill very recently.

About one year ago I had to ditch the stock cooler fan and retrofit a fan over the hole, which actually worked very well. Recently I have noticed a huge spike in temperatures, to 50C unloaded, and 90C (peak, 80C avg) during load. This is at stock clock speeds. I have had this card overclocked before, and never before have I run into temperature problems that actually caused the game to artifact so badly I could not even see to quit the game.

The second I alt-tab the temps drop to 60C's almost instantly.

There is no obstruction blocking the copper heatsink. Case temps are 85deg F.

Any advice? Is it possible the stock thermal past under the heatsink has degraded? I have no idea why the card is acting this way right now.

I'm looking for information about shared video memory used by windows. I remember using a mobo with an IGP and in the bios you could select how much of the system ram to use for it. My question is:

Does the Shared system momory (1279 MB) use the system ram or the page file?

If the page file is used that doesn't seem very efficiant. I have the 1.40 and 1.40 to 1.50 patch downloaded but for some reason the 1.40 patch won't run. It seems like it wants to, it shows up in the task manager but then disappears and the installer never actually starts.

So, we're looking to upgrade. I've heard the latest cards will work in the slots, but will be limited in bandwidth to the older non PCIe 2.0 bandwidth. (250 MB/sec versus the newer 500 MB/sec 2.0 standard)

Any recommendations? I only get 100fps looking in the skies , but i did notice it was staying around 50-75fps walking around. Drops to around 30 or so when fighting. This... It runs smooth , and looks insane seriously.

115-140fps(it did hit 140 once)


40-60fps(avg around 55)



Resolution 1280x1024, AAX2, The settings which are on very high are Textures, objects, water, particles and game effects. Everything else is on high settings, shadows high, sound on low and post on high and volumetic on high.
