The thing is, the fans and HDD's start spinning and starting but I get no video. I know the video card works cause I'm using the one in my current computer to see if my old rig would start up.

Could it be that the CPU is actually dead? Would that cause the computer to start yet eventually shut it self off, gnerally 10-45 seconds after I hit the power button.

I held back on upgrading the gpu untill id sorted my cpu out.

Anyway, my cheapy ez cool psu has got 2 18amp 12v rails. and 38amp on the 5v. 36amp on 3.3v

Will this be enough to run the 955 with a mild overclock to about 3.5ghz (i doubt voltage will need to be increased) along with a radeon 3870?

Ill be getting a new psu and a 5770 in the new year.

I was thinking about getting a new PC to replace this old junk heep, but i haven't got a whole lot of money, but i DO got a Monitor and a Copy of Windows XP SP2 so that'll chip off quite a bit of cash.

What i need:
CPU.
Motherboard.
Video Card.
RAM.
Power Supply.
DVD Burner.
Hard Drive.
Cheapie USB Keyboard and Mouse (Not sure if i have a spare keyboard and mouse somewhere)
Case.

Budget: Could it be done with no more than $400? Keep in mind i don't play anything Remotely demanding as Crysis or whatever is the most demanding/poorly optimized game out today.

Having good future upgradeability and decent OCing capability would be nice, but i'll take a stable box before a fried/busted one.

Hi Overclock.net I'm new here and somewhat new to overclocking. I've tried to do alot of my own tweaking over the past year or so based on what I've read from all of the helpful guides people have posted. It seems like I've hit a wall though, and I need some help from some of you experts.

One note about my RAM. Originally I had 2GB of DDR400 dual channel memory. For some reason, I lost my dual channel and speed one day with one of the RAM sticks, and my computer wouldn't boot up without it, telling me there was a corrupt system file. I went out and bought another stick of DDR400 1GB, and got my dual channel and 400 speed back. I also grabbed some RAM out of my friends old unused computer since it was DDR400 Dual Channel and installed it, even though it only brought me up .5GB. Not sure if that's important.

Anyway, I'm reading all of these posts about people overclocking older AMD dual cores pretty high. I on the other hand, can't seem to overclock mine well, not even past 2.2GHz will it completely boot without BSOD regardless of how much I play with the voltage or anything. Also, RAM timings confuse me heavily. My CPU temp is low too. I could really use to be schooled on things to mess with further, timings to try, diagnostics to run, etc.

A few notes about some current BIOS settings:
Current FSB: 210 (200 is Factory)
Extra CPU Voltage: 3.3%

Ok so ealier today my computer was running great no problems at all, then when I boot it back up the sound isnt working system restore wont start up, when I do it manually it wont complete it gives me an error saying it could not restore to any previous point at all, I am unable to use the win7 search to find anything at all on the windows start button, I tried doing a file repair with my upgrade disk and that didnt work the install wouldnt finish it gave me an error, this all happend after installing the heaven benchmark. The first time I used it everything was fine then the second time I did it which was later on in the day the sound wasnt working but I didnt think anything of it and I turned off my computer, and like I said ealier I turned back on and it started giving me problems. I did a virus scan and got nothing so im pretty sure thats not the cause. Things I have tried doing to fix the problem is:

system restore - didnt work
repair install - couldnt finish for an unknown reason
currently doing a chkdsk which I dont think its ganna find anything bad

the last thing I wanna do is a fresh install, but if it comes down to it I can. :/

My current mobo is the MA770-UD3 with the SB700 so it's likely it may hold me back which is why I ask.

Now, I want to shoot for 4.3Ghz. The question is, I don't know how many volts I need to adjust to. My CPU is a Phenom II x4 965BE (C3). I just tried it twice. The first time at (after droop) 1.45V and 1.5V. Both times it failed the stress instantly. I don't know if I want to keep upping the volts. I'm still pretty new to this. Any information on my system is found in my sig. If you need any other information, ask and I will post.

So this morning, I turned my computer on and everything went normal until i closed the front door of my computer case with a little bit of force. My computer locked up, so I did a force restart. But after I hit the restart button, nothing happened; my computer screen stayed black and didn't go through the POST or anything. I turned my comp off, turned it back on, then the same happened. I opened up my comp to check for any loose components, then tried turning it on. The BIOS screen appeared, but then it froze yet again. One more restart, and again, black screen. It seemed that the longer i waited before turning it on, the farther it would go without it locking up. I called up my friend and asked him what I should do, and he told me to take out the mobo battery for 5 min to set my overclock settings to default and then turning it on. I did this, and this time when the POST appeared, I got "CMOS Checksum error - Defaults restored... Press F1 to continue, DEL to enter setup". No matter which one I pick, it just goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner of the screen and just hangs there. Is my mobo essentially totalled? I need to upgrade my computer badly anyways, but I was wondering if there are possibly any fixes for this until I can get my hands on a new comp... Thanks in advance!

Recently my AthlonXP machine i use for my Dad and Brother decided to stop working.
it will turn on and display both the power LED and HDD LED without going into a POST or a OS. There are no Post beeps at all. The monitor displays a no signal message.

so far i have tried the monitor by plugging VGA cable into a VGA out on the laptop which worked, ruling out the monitor as the problem.
replaced all 3 sticks of 512mb ram.
replaced GFX card.
replaced PSU.
Cleared CMOS

is there anything i am missing? if it was the CD/DVDRW or HDD this would be displayed as an error on post? i am going to try this anyway as i have some spares but i couldn't see that the issue.

anyone else any other ideas? appricated all help recieved.
Going from this newegg list of AM3 motherboards that support DDR3-1333 with a AMD NB, which would offer the best overclocking ability with 4 gigs of DDR3 (as well as a recommendation)? Crossfire capability is preferred, but not required.

I have spent hours checking and rechecking the exact build I need for my upcoming gaming rig overhaul.

I looked at the Phenom II X4 965 and am not totally sold on the extra cost versus the real world FPS gain when compared to the 955. If you have a differing opinion, please don’t hesitate to state why.

Here is my current build. Cost really isn’t an issue, but spending $100 more for 5 more FPS is frivolous IMHO. With that in mind I chose the most powerful components (in my estimation) that money can buy.

Looking for some recommendations on what CPU/Mobo to get for my brother.

We'll finally be getting him off AGP!

I've built quite a few Intel systems but this will be my first AMD build.

Looks like 790 and 785 are the choices from AMD

I used Gigabyte boards on my intel builds and I've been really happy with all of them. I've had bad reliability luck with ASUS and very poor overclocking from MSI. Can anyone fill me in one what brands and what models from those brands are worth looking at?

Here's just what I'd pick based on a glance at Newegg. Let me know if I'm off base here.

Board:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128378

Whats the difference between these two CPUs?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103696

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103471

And why pick one over the other? Looks like the higher TDP/lower Hypertransport chip is also AM2+ so I'm guessing one is older than the other?

RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231193

Comes to 385-ish, if I were to spend more I think it would be on a more preferred motherboard or possibly to bump up to the 955 3.2Ghz black edition. The rest would go into a cooler for the CPU.

I've overclocked my AMD 7750 to a stable 3.1GHz but 3.2GHz is unstable - it's the regular (not black) edition. Stock speed is 2.7 and I'm quite proud of my first overclock ;)

Blackbox says the CPU voltage is 1.31v. Is this always the same, or does it increase and decrease according to CPU usage? What sort of increment should I increase the voltage by? 1.32v? 1.35v? 1.4v?

From what I gather (and I have read what I can find on Google, here etc) OCing is pretty safe until you start messing with voltages, then it can all go wrong, in an expensive stylee!

Should I be happy with 3.1GHz and quit while I'm ahead - although that doesn't sound like the Overclock.net way ;)

What's a good start for upping the voltage?

The only reports of overclocked 7750s I can find are for the black edition.

Thanks a lot,

CPU - AMD phenom II 955 BE
MB - Gigabyte MA785GT-UD3H
Ram - G Skill 2x2MB DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) F3-10600CL8D-4GBHK 8-8-8-21
Case - Raidmax Smilodan (Blue) w/500W PS

I will reuse HD and other stuff from my dying PC for now. I was going to get the DDR 1600 (9-9-9-24) until I read on Toms that the increase wasn't all that beneficial but it is the same $$. I figured the 8-8-8-21 timing would be better but I see the MB specs the 1600 ram.

Will I need a cooler for this setup?
Any problems you see?

thanks
