I'm looking for a quick answer to a build question, and hopefully someone can help. My previous build used an nVidia 7800GS, and I used WINE to run World of Warcraft.

I have always used nVidia cards under GNU/Linux because they seemed to give the best and most uncomplicated experience under GNU/Linux, according to what I have read.

For my next build I'm looking to start clean, with all new(ish) hardware. I'd like to know if ATI cards give as smooth an experience under GNU/Linux (setup & performance) as nVidia cards do, or am I better off sticking with nVidia?

I'm thinking of investing in a new HD5870, but if there's no support for that then maybe an HD4890. Or should I just stick with the devil I know and get a GTX275 or GTX285?

Don't get me wrong, I've no loyalty to either - I just want the least amount of hassle to support my proposed gaming environment.

Many thanks for any and all advice.

Hey. Currently trying to install some software and finding some of the instructions abit difficult to understand to say the least.

The instructions (from the README file) read:

1) either, if your running bash or ksh (i'm running bash), source the
etc/bashrc file by adding the following line to the end of your
$HOME/.bashrc file:

+ . $HOME/OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-1.6/etc/bashrc

then Update the environmen variables by sourcing the $HOME/.bashrc file by
typing in the terminal:
+ . $HOME/.bashrc

******

so what i'm having trouble with is the sourcing business or rather adding something to the end of the file... :S

HELP! lol

Ok since I have aspirations of being a Kick Ass I.T Admin/Network Admin/ETC. I figured that I'm gonna have to learn a thing or two(or maybe three) about Linux. I currently don't know squat about Linux in terms of actually besides clicking firefox and goin on the net. My rig works well with Linux except my sound card(based off of my last adventure to get it to work, which I must say is what turned me off from Linux, it took about 3 days of searching and asking questions).

So basically I need to learn Linux in a way that will benefit me in the I.T world not so much personal since windows does everything I need and more. Since there are a plethora of distros, I would need help picking one out.

I assume it would be best to use red-hat since that seems to be what a business would use if they choose to implement Linux. But what other distros are out there that would help with my career? The only one I tried was Ubuntu a while back and that was a pain in the ass to say the least since the documentation I came across wasn't that easy to understand off the bat.

i should also probably point out that while i have a decentish knowledge of linux i am in no way particularly experienced with it!

When I got rid of PA on Ubuntu, I could only get sound on one program at a time. Is this normal (I hear it would be, but couldn't find anything more accurate)? If not, what should I do to get sound on multiple programs?

And then JACK, PA and Phonon... I'm still not quite sure I understand them. I know PA and JACK are both sound servers, but I have the understanding that one can't be used instead of the other, but rather as a supplement/in different applications? And what exatly is this Phonon thing/where does it fit in?

I'm installing Gentoo and I'm trying to figure out what would be themost appropriate configuration as far as sound goes...

Oh and a quick question, even if you can't answer any of the above... do I have to worry about setting the USE flags regarding these applications at this stage?

Also, will cool&quite work correctly? My motherboard doesn't support undervolting, but some reading I have done hints at the possibility of using software in linux to both undervolt, underclock, and adjust the two dynamically. Could I create my own clock and voltage frequency profile within linux that would adjust itself based of system load?

This past weekend I swapped my Toshiba Satellite S5944 for an Acer Aspire 5720Z. We simply swapped my hard drive into the Aspire and it booted right up.To the astonishment of myself and my Dad (who owns and operates a computer shop) EVERYTHING worked without Ubuntu complaining about anything.

We then swapped the Aspire's drive (with Windows XP on it) instead the Satellite. It promptly crashed to a blue screen of death before even completing boot.

Well now here I am 100 miles away (at home) and I've got this Aspire that's working great except for one thing. The CPU fan. Without the latest BIOS update from Acer this machine requires the Acer Epower application (Windows Vista only) to manage the fans.

Well I'm currently typing this quickly so I can shut the machine back down before frying it.

I now have the problem that the Acer BIOS update is a Windows based application and won't run under Ubuntu....but I don't have another hard drive to swap into the machine to install Vista on and run the BIOS update. So currently it seems like my two options are: format my Ubuntu hard drive, install Vista, run the BIOS update, and then start from scratch with Ubuntu again...., or run Ubuntu with no CPU fan on.

I tried booting Windows 7 from a USB hard drive (that came out of a tower that's recently had some trouble), but of course, blue screen of death.

Any suggestions for running this damned BIOS update without Windows or some other way to not have to format my freakin' drive and spend another week customizing Ubuntu back to the way I like it?

Hi, today I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my netbook out of boredom. I use my netbook mostly for web surfing, school work and to watch movies/shows. I was amazed of how nice the UI was and the Ubuntu Software Center feature really came in handy. I'm a noob at LINUX but I say I can defend myself with a tutorial next to me, so I went and installed the Extras to enable some codecs playback along with some software such as Songbird, Chromium (love it!), emesene and some free games I found from the USC. Also managed to understand how Panels work and even added the ones I needed the most, keeping the looks clean. I can say I'm pretty satisfied with the system since I installed it I haven't logged back on my Win7 partition since I think I do everything I do on Windows in here. Installation was nice, I even managed to install my wifi drivers (Broadcom 4311) although the LED is not working which I don't really care. I have a few questions tho:

1 - I wanna know if VGA output works OOB as I use the netbook at school with a Projector.
2 - Is there anyway I could get the Brightness Indicator (OSD) to show? the FN button and its functions are all working although the only OSD I'm getting is the Volume one and it would be nice to have the Brightness one working aswell.
3 - Is there any program that shows the album art from the CD i'm currently playing on the desktop? In OS X is called Bowtie and I'm pretty sure there must be some sort of addon to make it work on desktop.
4 - is there a way to change the Notification Icons (wifi, battery)? I really would like to have the OS X ones in there becauce I think the defaults ones are kind of ugly.

At the end I really like the UI, and everything is really easy to do. I can't deny I love the chubby icons look too. Well, looking forward your responses thanks in advance.

I don't want to have to do a lot of command line, and I'd like something with a slick looking gui (addons maybe?). I've heard ubuntu is the best choice for this, and I've used it a couple times, but the gui is plain and it didn't really impress me that much. I've also hear that 9.10 isn't so great and that I should look for 9.04. So what distro should I use?

Hi all

I'm trying to get Kubuntu 9.04 64bit working in VMware workstation. It's installed and running, but it is refusing to connect to the internet, despite the fact that it pings my host OS (Win7 64bit) without issue. It's set to NAT, before anyone asks, because when I set it to bridged mode it doesn't connect at all. It can see my shared folders on my host OS as well, but when I try to connect to it's IP, Windows says it can't access, but that's probably because nothing is shared on Kubuntu. I'm trying to get it to fold, but that's gonna be a problem if it can't connect.

Also, I can't seem to install VMware tools. When I cd to the directory and run vmware-install.pl, it says no such directory or file, despite the fact that it is actually there:confused:.

Suggestions?

EDIT: I finally got VMware tools working and installed, but I still can't connect to the web. WTH? Konquerer says the connection to the server was refused every time I try to load a page.

I purchased the Anyware/Mediagate GP-IR02BK USB MCE remote / receiver after reading on several sites that it works just fine in linux.

I have never used LIRC before so I went to the arch wiki and followed the instructions step by step.
I installed both lirc and lirc-utils

I then ran: "setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none" followed by "modprobe lirc_mceusb2" (both as root)

Then I ran: "lircd" as root and got this:
lircd: WARNING: you should specify a valid gap value

I continued and ran irw both as a normal user and as root, but when I mashed buttons on my remote there is no terminal output. That being said I believe the remote / receiver are talking to each other because whenever I push a button on the remote a light blinks on the receiver.

I decided to check to make sure Arch saw the receiver. I ran lsusb and got this:
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 1784:0008 TopSeed Technology Corp.

This entry did not appear when I unplugged the receiver and ran the same command so I concluded this was my receiver.

If it wasn't clear I run arch linux if that matters.

Any ideas or suggestions would be great.

edIT: nvm, figured it out.

ok guys, I've been trying for two days to get GRUB off of my system. namely because I don't have my linux partitions anymore for GRUB to read.

Grub never worked right after installing ubuntu. Always got a GRUB Error 21 and it never loaded succesfully. I've been using super grub loader boot disk to boot into my hard drive's os's and that's been working fine.

Well turns out my hardware is a little to advanced for linux to use atm (no sound card support, raid non existent.) so I'm defaulting back to windows. In windows, I deleted my Linux partitions and restored (or so I thought) the boot sectors using the command "bootsect /nt60 c:"

no go

I've also used bcdedit to confirm that windows is setup to be the default boot device but still grub loads.

I'm at a loss. I can't get grub to go away no matter what I do. In windows XP it was a simple command of fixmbr. In dos it was fdisk /mbr. These commands no longer exist in windows vista/7.

I've also tried using the startup repair in windows 7 recovery options. still a no go. The first time I ran it, it recognized that winloader wasn't loading first and tried to fix it. Second time, it saw no problem but tried to fix it anyway.

So I'm completely stumped. How do I make GRUB ****?

So I got 9.10 on my laptop but I want to get it dual booting with Windows 7 on my desktop. So I bootup the install disk and it finds my 500gb array. I have 30gb free space at the end of the drive so I create my ext4 and swap partitions and start the install which moves smoothly. Upon reboot the Intel raid manager says the array has failed. It looks like the array splits somehow, like one 250gb disk is still a member disk but the other drive isn't. So I boot into the live Ubuntu distro and nuke the partition, then the RAID manager says it's healthy again. Then I can fix the mbr and log back into my Windows install.
Anyone else having his issue?
