I kept having problems with Firefox shutting down all the time, so i downgraded to the previous version. Didn't work. I also was periodically getting the blue screen of death. So i decided to do a re-install. During the install, it kept saying it couldn't find files. Sometimes I could retry and it would find it, but eventually, it would find a file that it couldn't find, so I would choose to skip. After a few of those, blue screen of death.

I do have a 250+gig partition with music, pictures, ebooks and videos. The other 40 gigs is for windows. I assume that i can format the 40 gig partition by itself without damaging the other one, so what is wrong? I really don't want to lose that data, but do i have to wipe the entire HD? any other suggestions?

Hello.

Do any of you know a reason why i cannot see important and optional update in iwndows updates , when i click show list of available , the list appears empty . any ideas?

oh and i had a problem with HDD [raid drives]

yesterday i had many bsod's even at stock i could not boot to windows until i took camera and took fast pic of BSOD . so that's how i ended up doing CHKSDK but it dint really helped to restore windows so i installed new OS.

so that was story how it happened that i ask about the windows updater thing.

another thing . i was playing mass effect and every time from some moment i exited the game there was that sound like i was unplugging a device or plugging it in . wait i will check in sounds to be sure..... a no it is the sound of logging in to system. now i had when i was watching a movie at custom resolution then default at desktop [ media player classic ] so when i go from full screen to windowed i get that sound too .

I am a little worried .
can any of you say something about this , like i should do some testing with some software on HDDs or so.

sorry for my english. i am still mad and i worry to much to type properly .

I connected them both to my LCD . but when I choose to use X1200 as my primary monitor I can't seem to get it back to 4670!?
I press this is my main monitor for 4670 but it just goes black , comes back up saying do you want to apply these settings but it has done nothing and still staying on X1200 !
What should I do? I tried disabling the x1200 drivers but upon rebooting Vista was black and didn't switch to my 4670 card.
I had to enable the x1200 drivers from safe mode...
Please advise!

Is windows 7 significantly smoother/faster/more responsive/prettier than Vista?
I already know about DX 11, but I'm not too concerned about it just yet.
Also would be nice to know about any major issues people have had.

I'm trying to fix a friend's laptop, which is displaying some really odd behaviour. It's a Packard Bell with Intel C2D T5200, running Vista SP2. Firstly, CPU-Z pegs it as running at 800MHz with a x6 multiplier - this is half what it should be, and even does it under load with Prime. I checked the BIOS to disable Speedstep, or undo any factory set underclocks (voltage was low too, under 1V!), but the layout of the CMOS confused the hell out of me - damn OEM machines! So many options on there, and very few seemed familar :(

Anyway, onto the main problem: Randomly, the system will hard lock - the weird part, is that it only seems to affect the keyboard & mousepad. Windows appears to operate in the background, as one of the lockups was during boot, and icons continued to appear in the system tray even though the system wasn't responding to user input! The HDD access was also frantic at this time (it's only got 1Gb of RAM, so is to be expected), indicating that it's not Windows itself (i.e. the kernel) that's crashed. It's not load dependant, it crashed on me whilst surfing the net, doing a windows update, booting up - there doesn't seem to be any trigger. I thought heat, but the cores were running at about 53C during the windows update, and they're good to 100C according to Intel. It's worth stating that not every hard lock affects solely the mouse & keyboard - I had one complete hard lock, where (tell-tale sign) the system clock didn't even update as the minutes rolled past. The last point of note, is the Event logs. I went to check these following restart, and Event Viewer said that the "Event Log service wasn't running", and "The data is invalid". It suggests that I start the event log service, but I couldn't find it in the list! A real shame, as I'm sure the answer is hidden in there. Also, I ran a Windows Defender scan, which came back clean, so no bugs on board. Mystery!

There was a previous incident, involving a USB wireless mouse, which apparently died in a possibly spectacular way. I'm a bit hesitant to suggest that it's damaged the mobo or something like that, as it survives the POST alright, and will run without hitch until it decides to stop receiving input. I haven't tried removing the keyboard & mouse drivers, as they're quite a pain to do and I can't be sure that it'll solve anything.

Any advice/clues you can give will be greatly accepted!! Especially something that helps decode that damn CMOS!!!

I'm having a weird issue that has cropped up lately (that I am trying to isolate and resolve).

With my sig rig, periodically when playing games (full screen), I get popped out to the windows desktop (like when you hit the windows key on your keyboard or alt-tab).

Nothing crashes or locks up; I can click on the minimized game and go right back into it without issue.

It doesn't seem to be an overclock or temp issue during the games I am playing (as they are still running fine when I bounce back in).

It doesn't seem like any keys or combination are triggering it; one of the games I play is completely mouse driven (as such no contact with my keyboard).

The only thing I can think it might be would be graphics drivers but I have never seen this occur before.

Any thoughts? (running XP btw)

So Naturally I enabled it again and booted up only to find that it's only showing 4 cores not 8 threads :( Is this normal? If not what can I do to fix this? oh btw I play games alot so should I keep HT on for gaming? Plus I only want to do this to stop lag spikes with Mozilla Firefox because it locks up when I load more than 6 tabs. Any help is appreciated :)

I have access to legal copies of both XP Professional x86 and Vista Business x86. Which would you recommend? I've used both (although the Vista was x64 that I used) and liked both. Part of me wants to keep her more current with Vista, but XP will do better with the 2x1GB of memory won't it? It's not like she needs Direct x10 or anything (card can't support it anyway). What would you install?

My build has been working for a couple months with no issues. It's been working with a slight overclock for quite some time. But today while playing a game(Been playing this game on the computer for a while, so I doubt it caused this.) The computer randomly decides to restart. During the restart it posted just fine, but after the post I just get a black screen. No curser or anything in the top right corner. I tried putting in the windows 7 CD and tried doing a Startup Repair, says no issues detected. Tried doing a system restore to 2 days ago, nothing fixed it. Ran memory diagnostics test, no issues found. I've also tried unplugging all peripherals and such from the back, and defaulting all BIOS.

Any idea how to fix this? Not sure what else to do.
