OK. New case resurrection project. I don't really have specific plans for this case yet. For the time being I'm focusing on functional aspects to improve airflow and get it ready for my 5 year old daughter. This is going to be a tight on money and light on performance project. I'm hoping to bring it home for under $100 with case modding included.

Here is the front. It's called Project ASUS because it's an old "powered by ASUS" case. The label that you can't see due to glare says it plain as day. I swear. A good portion of the nicks and marks you see are just debris I left to help with the before/after appeal.

The back. I'm not a fan of top mounted PSU's but it's free and I can work with it. The back fan is 80mm or 92mm, I haven't measured.

Neat thing about the inside. All of the HDD cages are easily removable. I really like the mounting of the two on the floor, but they are too close to the front fan mounts to stealth the cables to the "front" without more extensive modding than I initially planned.

That is a tiny 80mm fan mount. I'm not sure who thought it would be a good idea to put dents in the door and call them handles, but I'm pretty sure I hate them. Especially when it comes time to sand and paint.

Everything is out that will come out. As you can see I have cut a few holes in the motherboard tray for cable and heatsink management. I also removed the useless mesh on the twin front 80mm fan mounts. The hole I cut for the PSU cables looks really crappy in this picture for some reason, but those are pretty clean edges like all the others. I had U-channel in mind when I cut them.

Plans for the future:
Custom el-cheapo feet
What to do about that side panel
Increase ventilation
Girlyfication

Background

Borderlands is set on the planet of Pandora. Lured by its apparent vast deposits of minerals, several colonization ships journey to the planet and create a society there. However, they soon discover that there is little else of value on the planet save for the presence of alien ruins. Those who are rich enough to do so, leave the planet, leaving the rest of the population to scavenge for themselves. While some isolated settlements were formed, much of the rest of the colonists became bandits, living out in the barren wastelands or trash heaps across the planet. Further investigation of the alien artifacts leads to the discovery of "The Vault". A supposed treasure trove alien artifacts, technology, and of insurmountable wealth. But those that had discovered it were wiped out by a protective force, leaving few clues as to its location or purpose but creating a myth of its marvelous treasures.

My adventure begins elsewhere as I will reveal in the following months.

I welcome you all to...

STARDATE 20091 (Monday)

Having landed on Pandora only a few days ago, I came upon a Scrapbot, in pretty bad shape, lifeless to tell the truth...
I managed to find a photo maker, this planet seems to have been depleted of most of the human resources I have come to accept as a part of life, yet here I am on this wasteland with a Scrapbot at my feet...

Lifeless...

It Seems to have suffered a crushing blow which resulted in its death. With most of it's circuits missing or ripped out and scattered about its lifeless shell, I know this will be an impossible task to repair and rebuild, but with persistence I shall reach my goal.

With not much in the way of tools I begin to make plans on how to repair this Scrapbot, these are some of the images I have come up with.

Some rough sketches...
Although not the best of builds these arms will serve their purpose.

Here you can see how the wheel will be attached and what the top should look like.

STARDATE 20091 (Tuesday)

This planet is fairly barren, sometimes I venture out in my combat vehicle, with my sniper rifle in tow, looking for scraps and occasionally taking down the strange beasts the inhabit the area.

I was able to find some drawing materials in what was once a Lab of sorts. I spent the night through to the next morning working on some improved designs for the Scrapbot I will be attempting to build.

Technical Drawings...

TOP

LEFT+RIGHT

BACK

Using the photo maker I found and repaired, I was able to piece all my drawings together, so that you will be able to see what I hope to achieve.

I will keep sending my logs back home so that you can see the progress I have made.

Seth.

~Project Pepto~

Girlfriend's Christmas gift, a new AMD rig AND a pink case.

Over the past few months my girlfriend's rig has been going into a downward spiral of failure/insufficiency. . .

For a few months I've been promising her a new [pink] case, to replace the Gateway-looking case she has now. The term "airflow" does not even apply to her current case, there's virtually none unless a window is opened in the room and a stiff breeze happens to seep into the small vent on the side of the case. So my first goal:

A case with much better airflow and ventilation.

Two 80mm fans in the front

Two 80mm exhaust fans in the rear

Two 120mm window fans for CPU and GPU

I showed her a bunch of cases and she picked out a few that she liked and I eventually came to dislike most of them. I wanted something was had a classic design but also something that you don't see everyday, as well as something I would enjoy cutting up/painting. I decided to mod a Chieftec Dragon. (Actually, I bought a Chenming, but it's basically the same thing). I loved the look of this case since I remember seeing it in gaming cafes back in ~2000. Here's a poor GoogleSketchup of what I originally planned for it to come out looking like:

(The 120mm on the bottom was my initial thought for another exhaust, but I decided not to)

A stock photo of what the case actually looked like when I got it (but it was an ugly shade of mustard yellow):

So that's it, right? I have the case, now time to mod!

... Wrong. The problem with the computer, other than a bland case, is that she's been combating poor FPS (she's a gamer) and the overall slowness of her PC. She would like to have a new rig, but groceries, bills, and everyday expenses take first priority. That's when it came to me, I had some car parts laying around and decided to hit up craigslist.com and see how much I could fetch...

Long story short, I came up with much more money than I thought I could get for some old tires and a few steering components.

It's time to not only mod her a case, it's time to build her a completely new rig.

Christmas is coming up soon so I decided, hell, why not? Her current specs are: Athlon 64 x2 @ 2.6 GHz, 4GB DDR2 @ 667 MHz, 8800 GTS, with a 160GB HDD. My Frankenbuild started piece by piece, all right here (minus the case) on OCN:

Chieftec Dragon case - bought, thanks random eBayer

Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P - bought, thanks hitman1985

AMD Phenom II x3 720BE - bought, thanks JonJonOK

Sapphire HD 4870 512mb - bought, thanks firestormcomputers

OCZ Reaper 1066 4GB (2x2) - bought, thanks the3lement

Larger HDD - bought 200GB IDE, but may look for a SATA

DVD Rom - Her current case has one, I'll use that

Power Supply - Still on the fence, may use her's

OS - She has Vista 32, that will do for now

I also want to thank both Bill from MNPCtech.com for the high quality fan grills I purchased from them and Rustoleum for their great spray paint and the new spray tips they use! (the ones that don't give you blisters!)

Current to-do list:

Cut intake and exhaust holes

Purchase 4-pin molex connector

Purchase pink LED strip

Wire and mount LED strip

Purchase some Ceramique

Finsh painting (includes inside front bay door, screws, right side panel and right side panel interior, top and top interior)

Reassemble front panel

Purchase x2 120mm fans

Purchase x1 80mm fan

Purchase letter "E" acrylic cut-out

Possibly purchase Serenity/Firefly side window vinyl

Possibly purchase new HDD

Possibly purchase new PSU

Reassemble entire case

Install all components into case

Unlock 720BE's disabled 4th core (it's from the 0904DPMW batch)

Overclock to at least 3.1GHz.

Pictures to come!

I'm building a htpc/occasional gaming rig. Any comments or ideas on the stuff i have, or anything that would go well with it?
Anyway i'm starting off by stripping my brand new Cosmos S, & painting the chassis matt black & maybe filling the 3 large holes & cut some more so the cables are invisible as possible.
Heres my start...

Got My HAF 932 and I love it but it really needs some attitude. Doing the same as everyone else and painting it inside and some outside . Will keep posting back as it comes along. Gonna be Hi gloss Black inside with Imperial Red meshes and accents. Installing AMD Phenom II x4 955 and a Radeon 5870. Budget isnt there for DDR3 but gonna use 8 Gigs of PC 6400 until DDR3 comes down in price. I have a family to support and the only reason I got to build a new computer is because my 5 yr old machine (3200+ barton and 1 gig of DDR) had all the capacitors explode.Using the Asus M4A78-E until I upgrade to DDR3. Cooler Master V8 cooler and red lighting inside. 3 dvd burners and maybe a Blu-Ray drive.A 640gb HDD and a 1TB HDD.Definately overclocking this baby.

I thought my last full tower was big. Sheesh this thing is ginormous! My 4 yr old daughter was very sick the day it came but got real excited when I pulled it out of the box. She likes to play her games on the internet and wants a computer to play with.So more photos to follow as I do the project and get my PSU decided on.

Was thinking about the XION Power Real XON-1100P14HE 1100W. Anyone have any experience with this PSU? I like that it's cheap and matches my case color scheme perfectly.Any feedback is great and Thanks.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ION-_-17190025

Also I need some good wheels for this thing.Does anyone have a link to where i can buy them? The wheels that come with it will probably break from the weight. Some stronger ones would work great. Been to all the surrounding hardware stores and they dont have any that will fit the screw holes.

Now lets get her ready to disassemble and paint..

Just got my HAF932 last night, and ripped it into a million pieces.
Planning on doing a custom paint job first then later a side window mod. Details Below

Build will be whats in my sig

Going to go with a beetlejuice color scheme. Black White and then green and uv purple.

Modifications planned include

- Paint front bay mesh grills white (5.25 and the one that covers the 230mm fan)
- Paint a black fan with uv paint to replace the red led fan in the front
- Mod the red led 230mm fan with purple uv lights and mount in top of case
- x4 Nexus Basic 120mm for the side (possibly uv accented)
- Paint bulk of interior black, paint back panel white, paint drive cages white, paint other accent-able areas white.

This will be the start of the project once i get this part done i will probably do a window later. I already started taping off the back panel going to paint the X white as well as the hd cage vents. That will be the first test painted areas. Pictures to come soon. Thanks

Alright, as the title states, this project will be named Panzerschreck, parts lists and such will be found below. I'm currently still outlining the exact setup and config, but its not going to be tooo overdone.

Reason for this build is simply that we are pcs'ing to alaska next month, and i don't want to have a 59 lb Cosmos S rig to transport ;)

Reason for the name: I remember my Grandfather to well, telling me about his WWII stories and such; so i thought ill just choose something in that direction, which also gave me a push in the Case choice.

Case of my choice:
- NZXT Panzerbox (estimated delivery date: 12th Nov. 2009)

Rig Parts:
- Intel Core I7 920
- FoxConn Bloodrage
I modified the HDD cage the case ships with to allow me to reverse mount my HDD's and hide the cables ;)

Gneral shot of the whole case, came out blurry though :(

Took about 6 Hours in total, still got some odd bits of cable management to do as I'm not 100% happy with it and I might run all the fans at 7v to keep the noise down.

My 4890 is in the lower slot as it runs 10c cooler due to it being closer to the air flow provided by the fan blowing up from the bottom and it also gets airflow from the fan on the HDD cage.

I also have one Xigmatek fan left over and I'm unsure on what to do with it, might cable tie it to the front.......not sure

Tomorrow the CM 932 HAF is supposed to be delivered to me by UPS. I have purchased the Chrome, Gold, & Blue paints, some sand paper, lacquer thinner, 1/8" drill bit, masking tape, & rivet gun. I can't wait to start working on this custom paint job. I will post pictures of the progress. The outside of the case will be Instant Gold with black accents. I will mask off what areas remain black and the rest will be painted Instant Gold. The majority of the interior will be painted Instant Chrome and the drive bay racks will be painted metallic blue. I will install blue lights throughout with blue fans as well. I have not seen a paint skeem like this one. I do not like a lot of black colour, so most of the mods I have seen I do not care for to be honest. I do not like red either for the most part. I want a case that looks nice whether the lights are on or off. I will also clear coat all surfaces. I will mask off the "HAF" on the side of the case so that it really pops surrounded by the Gold. All the fan grills and bay grills will remain black as well as any other plastic black parts. I will not be painting any of the plastic parts. Check back often to see how this project is shaping up. I might rent a mini storage unit to do the painting in.

*DVD Drive and HD coming on Wednesday when I will install Windows and hopefully get some overclock results up here!!*

The plan:

Take a Cooler Master Cosmos 1000 case, give it a sick red and black theme, and get all the components which include: Foxconn Bloodrage, Core i7 920 D0, Alphacool HF14 Yellowstone Waterblock (Black), Mushkin Redline, and more. Make cable management cuts, as well as water cooling cuts. Cut out a space for a plexiglass window, paint the panel, order the window, attach. Put everything together. Overclock.

The parts I need to order:

Cosmos 1000
Foxconn Bloodrage (was bought for me by my uncle. THANK YOU)
Mushkin Redline 6GB (was bought for me by another uncle. THANK YOU)
Core i7 920 D0 *EN ROUTE*
Black Ice GTS 280 Radiator
2 x Lian Li 140mm Red LED Fans
2 x Lian Li 120mm Red LED Fans
XSPC 500mL Acryllic 5.25" Bay Resevoir
Alphacool AP700 Pump
Alphacool HF14 Yellowstone Waterblock
Ultra X3 1000W Power Supply
Primochill UV Red Tubing
Intel 80GB X25-M MLC SSD
Windows 7 Pro (From Microsoft's Ultimate Steal for $29.99)

Parts I own already:

Seagate 250GB 7200RPM with Windows XP Home
Seagate 500GB Storage Drive
EVGA GEFORCE 6200 LE BEASTMODE (until I decide on a DX11 card) No games for me for a while.

To Do:

Strip Cosmos 1000 of all removable parts
Cut two holes for rear-mounted 120mm Radiator (For a 2nd GPU loop in the future)
Cut cable management holes for a clean look
Cut square behind CPU for easy access to heatsink/WB
Decide on/buy paint/primer
Remove foam padding from left side panel
Use goof-off to remove adhesive from foam padding
Cut window hole in side panel
Paint window panel
Attach Plexiglass to window panel
Paint case and accessories
Put case together
Put system together
Put water loop together
Install Windows 7
Overclock

I've been designing this build for over a year now, and am really happy that I finally have the chance to build it. And I'm also excited about doing everything myself, rather than paying somebody to paint or cut. Even if I don't do a perfect job :) It's good enough.

The storm scout has the ablility to turn the LED's on the case fans on and off. what i wanted to do was somehow splice in and add the ability for that switch to control turning on and off my red cold cathodes too.

i spliced into the wires going going to the front led light. the switch works with turning the fan led's on and off, but the cold cathodes arent turning on at all. the connections are good and everything is in working condition (the lights arent broken or anything). im thinking it has something to do with how CM wired the switch. i think they may have lowered the voltage, and its not enough for the cold cathode to get power. havent worked on taking the top of the case off to see exactly how they have the front panel wired. that will be my next step.

i need help figuring out why they wont turn on, am i missing something? if it would be helpful i can post pics of what i have done so far. thx for the help
