Ok I know these threads always turn into an Apple Bashfest, but please reply intelligently and as unbias as possible. Thanks.

I'm moving past using my computer for just gaming and word files. I'm out of college and rarely use MS Office anymore, with the exception of maybe Excel once in awhile. I don't play any high demanding games anymore either. Keep in mind that no matter which laptop I go with, I will probably keep my desktop for the occasional demanding game and/or MS required software.

I'm looking for a more mobil means of experiencing multimedia. I want something that I can use to organize/play movies and music, browse internet, and be mobile. The laptop doesn't need to be ultra light or anything, I will probably just be moving it to various rooms and taking it to friend's homes. I would probably take it on business trips just for means of entertainment.

With all the above information, it seems like a MacBook might be a good choice. It's portable, plays media, does internet, and seems to keep things simple (which I like) and is stable. I prefer quality over quantity and I value efficiency.

Also... can anyone provide useful information on the audio hardware/quality of the macbook? I'd hate to have my HD555's go to waste.

I'm open to suggestions, but as I said from the start, please discuss intelligently and maturely. Thanks!

(Sorry for the lengthy post! :typer:)

Even though the GPU is technically inferior to my old laptop, it runs games much better - MW2 runs at 1920x1200 high settings. The screen is superb as well, and once I've got the warranty I'll start OCing the GPU. The best part is, I paid £460 for it, and sold my old M1710 for £520. Result eh?:D

Hey Y'all, Im trying to fix a friends computer and I need your help.

The computer is a Gateway ML6720 and the problem is with the CPU fan and getting a cpu fan failure message on boot up. It says that there is something wrong with the cpu fan and to check it. Once I double checked everything and cleaned out the fan and heatsink and disconnected and reconnected the fan cable I still received the error.

So I replaced the cpu fan and heatsink and Im still getting the cpu fan failure message. fan does turn on when the computer turns on but stops shortly after. I receive the message right after the BIOS loads.

The BIOS is no help, I can get into it but since its a gateway my options are very limited. No cpu fan/temp info at all.

So I think that is the mobo but I want to be sure and make sure that I exhausted all other viable options. So Im desperate for help, any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Good resolution is imperative to me as I like to have more than one window open at a time while programming. Looking for 1440x900 or higher really.

Right now I'm looking at the Vaio FW series as its design really caught my eye and it has a nice resolution of 1600x900. Another one I'm considering is the Dell 17 series even though I've heard less than stellar reviews of them..
Thanks for any suggestions!

Well, it's certainly been a while since I've been on here...I had to sell The Dark Knight for financial management reasons before I joined the Army (even though I got the damn thing to 4 gHz stable on air with the Blue Orb II:D). I'm two weeks away from going back home and I just got a sweet deal on a used Asus G50Vm-X1. I'm not a n00b to overclocking by any means - at least not for the world of desktops.

Laptops is my new (and unfortunately mandatory) solution for computing...so I hate to sound like a completely ignorant pain in the ass, but I've got to ask...

How do you overclock laptops?:eh-smiley

Obviously I'm going to have to go around the BIOS - therein lies the problem because that's all I know. I have researched it for a while now but this is like reading chinese to me. From what I can decipher, you have to use a program like setfsb and then go from there. Help (PLZ)?

Thx

A cursory search shows precious few reviews of the X83 model. Existing reviews use the old N81 or X81 platforms in their reviews. Hopefully this can be useful to anyone else ^_^ b

Recently Asus appears to have revisited its N81 series notebooks and the X83VP is one of the resulting variants recently released.
This model in particular eschews the growing 16:9 trend by using a 16:10 screen ratio.

Also worth noting is that this model has a solid mid-range graphics card in the ATI Mobility HD4670. This compares favorably against Nvidia GT240M's, and more often than not beating it.

Another addition is upgrading the base N81 platform from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium. Saving you from having to pay the shipping costs incurred from Asus' own free Windows 7 upgrade program.

Specifications

Summary of Newegg Hardware Specs

CPU: Core2Duo P8700, 2.53Ghz, 1066 FSB, 3MB L2 Cache

RAM: 4GB DDR2-800

GPU: ATI Mobility HD4650 1GB

HDD: 500GB, 5400RPM Prepartitioned into two (2) ~250gb partitions

Screen Size: 14.1"/35.8cm

Native Resolution: 1280x800

Wireless: 802.11n

LAN: 10/100/1000 Mbps

Webcam: 1.3MP Integrated

Optical Drive: DVD MultiRecorder

Battery: 6-cell Lithium Ion battery

Weight: 5.5lbs/2.49kg

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Included OEM Applications

Express Gate

Power4Gear Power Manager

ASUS Splendid Utility

ASUS CopyProtect

ASUS Data Security Manager

ASUS Live Update

Now, why did I highlight the GPU? Simply, I was naturally expecting a laptop with an HD4650 in it when I opened the box. However, a quick review of the specs sticker seen below shows otherwise:

Pardon the flash, that's just the manifestation of my joy coming from a lappy with 915gm integrated video.

Yup, Newegg's got it listed wrong. It's actually an HD4670 in this little lappy. Granted it's just a higher clocked version of what I was expecting, but I also can't say I'm too bummed out about getting a better GPU than I intended :D

Packaging
Packaging is a fairly cut-and-dry affair. Apparently the X83 isn't different enough to the N81 line that it warrants its own box. Also I realize that someone just laid the rice serving spoon on the cooker instead of washing it

Once you get inside there's still nothing to really set it apart from anyone else. The manuals, battery, power brick, and included microfiber cloth in one part and the lappy in the other.

Opening the laptop up reveals even more packaging material. It's well warranted, since the body is so prone to fingerprints but more on that later.

Initial Impressions
Okay, seems that all that protective meshing was held on with either static or light adhesive. Much good that did me as they all apparently wanted to cover up the breathing holes typically found on the human face.

Anyway, here's how she looks like. Mind you it took some effort getting the protective cover from her bare top, but once I managed it I found it was well worth it ;). Be glad there aren't [many] fingerprints on it, you've no idea how strong the sudden desire to grope it was.

It is worth it to note, though, that the blue is so dark you really can't see much of the design. I was completely unaware that there was a webbed design on it in the first place!

Connectivity is available in spades, there's ports all over this thing. There's a total of 5 USB, 1 eSATA, 1 HDMI, 1 1394 port, 1 mic, 1 headphone, 1 ExpressCard slot, 1 LAN, 1 VGA, the power port, and the card reader.

NOTE: for those of you who still require a modem, there is not one on this model. The pictures below show that it is actually blocked off.
Right

Backside ;)

Left

Initial Impressions - The Inside
You all knew this was coming

Not even 20 minutes out of the box and I had to strip her down and feel out the insides ;)

A picture's worth a thousand words, so I'll just let them do the talking
Full shot:

Benchmarks coming in the next few days to weeks. I'm a busy college student with a part-time job so I'll squeeze in benching as I can get to it

hopefully to come:
HDtune 2.55 tests
Furmark ratings
SuperPi
CPUz says the U1500 is socket 479, however, I was under the impression that socket 479 was a bit older. CPUz also says it's an i945GMS/GU chipset, which supports Core 2 Duos, and I'm almost certain no mobile Core 2 supports socket 479. Whats the deal here?

Recently I installed windows 7 onto my Lenovo T500. Everything was running great until a few days ago. It seems that every other startup, it just wont post to windows. It gets stuck on a blank screen with no further activity. I can fix it by using the windows 7 disk and repairing startup. Then I can boot into windows and usually for another bootup its fine, then it does the same thing again. I've run memory tests and hard disk test and those are not the problem. Any ideas guys?
The battery indicator on the laptop says that it is charged and healthy, but when I unplug the cable it still won't run on battery. I've reformatted the whole hard drive and no progress. Can I fix this problem? If I can, how? Or is my motherboard just all messed up and can't doing anything about it?

I figure if it can run FSX, he'll be good for most of the other PC only games, since he won't be getting Crysis anytime soon. I tried IBuyPower and CyberPowerPC, but with Office it puts it over. A friend of mine has the same service, we both did the same test (http://www.speedtest.net/) and i get around 1.55mbs download and upload, where he gets around 7.5mbs for both . (while on my laptop at his house.)
