Here's what I got so far (Newegg links for ease):
Case: Antec P183
Mobo: ASUS M4A79XTD
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 3.4GHz
RAM: G.Skill DDR3 1600 4GB (2x2GB)
VGA: Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 1GB
PSU: Antec CP-850 850W

I think that would be a pretty solid system. I'll go with some Slipstream case fans (since I've been getting good performance out of the ones I have in my P182) but I have no idea what a good CPU or VGA cooler would be. I'm liking the numbers on my current Zalman VGA cooler (38C-45C core, 28C-32C ambient idle-load) but I'm not sure if it's the best way to go. Same goes for my CPU... in fact the numbers are pretty much the same, but you can subtract 2C from each on GPU to get those.

Ok so the plan is to take my current sig rig and integrate it into my living-room. Up until now I've used my rig for mostly gaming and internet browsing. Now I want to use it more as an HTPC. I know basically nothing about HTPC's. I want to use it as my TV, DVD player (maybe Blu-ray?), internet browser, gaming system, and life organizer (set up reminders, do scheduling etc). I'm sure my computer can handle this with a couple upgrades.

I'm thinking that to watch TV on my PC I will need a TV tuner. I know nothing about these. I don't have a TV with computer inputs available so I was thinking of using my PC and monitor. Which tuner should I use? I was thinking about getting the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR1850.

I currently have a DVD player but am wondering if getting a Blu-ray drive is worth while. Will Blu-ray movies play on my 1680x1050 monitor? I'm pretty sure my video card would support it. Any Drive recommendations? I'm thinking about getting the LG WH08LS20K.

To help with life chores and organization, I'm thinking about getting Windows 7 Premium 64-bit. It seems to be getting good reviews and I'm sure is a step up from my XP 32-bit.

To take full advantage of Win7 and to increase PC responsiveness, I'm thinking of adding another 2 gigs of ram for a total of 4 gigs. I don't think I can squeeze 2 sticks under my HSF so I may just get a 2x2gb kit. Recommendations? I'm thinking about Corsair Twin DDR2-800 2x2gb.

Thoughts? Comments? Advice? :D Thanks.

Ok... after months of waiting/debating/researching i have finally decided to pull the trigger and order something already, this is what i am thinking of ordering, let me know what you think and any suggestions!
AMD Phenom II x4 965 c3 125w
ASUS Crosshair III R.O.G.
OCZ AMD Black Edition 2x2GB DDR3-1600Mhzh
XFX Radeon HD5970 2GB
2x Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB in raid0
Corsair HX1000W
Logitech G9X
Samsung 2343BWX 2028x1152 23IN monitor
Windows 7 OEM home premium

I need a CPU cooler, something cheap (40-50$ fans included) but still effective, this is my first OC experience and i will eventually transition to hardcore water cooling so i just need something to help me till i do.

Will all games support the 2048x1152 resolution on this monitor?

Any hard drives faster then the caviar blacks for the same price? will be going SSD for OS and games next year but want fast 7200rpm drives till i do.

And last but not least is the ram good? I LOVE the marketing job on it, the branding of it makes me want it badly but if its crap can you recommend something better?

Thanks for the help, i am emailing the list to my computer guy tomorrow at the latest!

Took much longer than I originally thought it would. First time though so I guess 5 hours isn't too bad. The whole thing runs great except the power button. I know it's plugged in properly but pressing it does nothing. Hitting the reset button next to it starts it up though so I'm not too worried.

I know the cables are a little messy but I didn't know what to do with a few of them. The back and top fans had pretty short cables so I had to run them down the side and bring up a couple power connectors to plug them into. And, I had to run the CPU power connectors up the side over my graphics card.

Total = $794 (The PSU and case come in a bundle saving me $15)

Now this system looks great to me, but I would really like to drop the price by $100 or so, without losing too much performance. Any tips on what could be sacrificed, and for what instead? I know the wireless adapter would be the first thing to go, but my router is all the way across the house from me, so that isn't an option. Since I am stuck getting one, does this seem like a good one? it had the most reviews, and good ones at that, so for $20 it seemed like a good deal. Also, I am willing to spend this much if it's worth it, so I wanted to make sure everything I have picked out looks ok. My main concerns were the case and the psu, because I skimped on those two the most. Do those look ok, or is there something better you can suggest for not much more? Same goes for all the components. Thanks a lot for looking, and all your help is appreciated.

Hey guys...

So I want to build a gaming rig in December, in India (Mumbai to be exact). And I need some help because I don't quite know if these parts are compatible. I have a $1500 budget. I hope it's enough... :(

Oh I have some basic knowledge of building a gaming rig, because, well... I'm only 15 years of age... lol...

EXTRA DETAILS: I am currently living in Uganda, and there are no shops that sell good parts... So I would also like to know if these parts are durable...

Anyway here is what I'm thinking of: (will they be compatible?)

I have a few questions, this dragon platform thing is con****ulating, its only the 790FX chipset?

Btw im in South Africa and for sum reason they dump all the semi decent memory here, (ill admit kingston or corsair wont give u any grief) but its all high latency dog**** :P so these are the ONLY decent modules i found that are on the QVL and dealing from past experience ill stick with the QVL.

This is the website im using www.comx.co.za and id like to stick to them plz.

My question is which mobo ram combo is the better option? My bud doesnt OC, and ill be the 1 getting it all upto speed, so yeah.

nb: in ZAR ~ $1=R7.50

Building a semi budget system. Dont have that much to spend and most parts I bought/buying are on sale. Gonna order last parts tonight. Gonna be a long weekend if they dont come in by friday lol.

Haven't Bought Yet
AMD Phenom II X4 945 C2 Quad Core Processor AM3 3.0GHZ 8MB Cache 95W
Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P ATX AM3 AMD790X DDR2 CrossFireX 2PCI-E 2PCI SATA2 Sound GBLAN Motherboard
OCZ StealthXStream 600W ATX12V 20/24PIN Active PFC ATX Power Supply 120MM Fan Black

Already Bought
Powercolor Radeon HD 4890 1GB
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 7200RPM 32MB
OCZ Gold XTC PC2-6400 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-18 DDR2 240PIN***
(got the OCZ Gold because I already had the 2GB kit and want to combine)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64BIT DVD OEM
Philips DVD writer from my current PC

Only thing Im thinking about is the 945. It will run cooler so Im hoping It will OC a bit more, but also the 720 is alot cheaper and a chance I can unlock the quad. Why are these choices so hard.
What would you do?

What I did:

Re arrayed my RAID0, re installed the OS, re installed all my drivers, down clocked my RAM to 1066, and manually set the timings to spec 7-7-6-18-t1 DRAM Volt at 1.85. At stock vcore the CPU is stable at 3.6(set multi to 18). My ambient temp it 20 to 21~, and with my fans set to med o fan controller highest temp was 47~. That was after 2 hours of prime 95torture testing.

Arma2 runs smoother the with the same set up except I was using the UD4P MG with DDR2 800 over cocked to 1066 with 5-5-5-24 t1, and my old 550 at 3.8 in dual

So again to Tot, Volt, el gappo and the others who provided with all their help. I think it was a RAM/software issues, stopped getting the AT display driver recovery message.

Thanks to all again

I have been wanting to build another computer for a while. Something basic, maybe for office use, an console emulator here and there, and a general machine to complement my main rig. Despite having limited room, I bit the bullet and bought parts to build another computer, and this will be my second build. :D

I have a Athlon 64 X2 5000+ and a HD4670 lying around and I was thinking: "Hmm, it would be fun to build another computer, and I could steal 4GB of ram from my main computer to get things going at least..." So today I bought a case, motherboard, power supply, optical drive, and hard drive.

Here's what I bought on Newegg for $287.91 before shipping:

ASUS M4A78 Plus AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD753LJ 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive
Thermaltake Purepower W0100RU 500W ATX 12V 2.0 Power Supply
Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
LG 22X DVD Burner - Bulk Black SATA Model GH22LS50 LightScribe Support

Parts I have lying around:
Sapphire HD4670 1GB
Athlon 64X2 5000+
4GB of DDR2 800 (stole from my sig rig for the time being...)
2x SATA cables

Shouldn't be too bad for a machine I'd use here and there. :D

I just want to upgrade the cpu because it's kind of out dated, but don't really want to change the whole system again, so as less items as possible is preferred.
I am interested in triple or quad cores.
And, of course I want to save as much money as possible.
Budget about $300.

I don't mind getting a cooler to oc the cpu.
Any suggestions? Thanks guys.

Hi. First post, hope this doesn't stop ya ;)

Alright, some fast read info.
I've been a gamer since younger days but I'm totally new to OC'ing. I now want a rig that's the most bang for the buck and some oc experience included.
It will be used mostly for gaming and playing HD material.

This is one option I've come up with:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE
Cooler: Scythe Mugen 2
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P
GPU: XFX HD5770 1GB
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB DDR3 1600MHz CL7 (7-7-7-24)
PSU: Corsair TX650W
Case: Cooler Master 690 Dominator
HDD: Samsung Spin Point F3 1TB 7200/32

Some inputs of what i want:

Future proof for possible upgrades of crossfire and a PCI-E soundcard.
I also need free card slots for a PCI-E wireless NW card and a PCI VIA SATA card (I think that the Gigabyte card has slots for all this?).
Will run 32-bit OS, most likely Win7.

All inputs are appreciated and I'm positive to change the whole rig if you have any ideas, preferably cheaper alternatives. Keep in mind, the most BANG for ze buck :)

Looking for a decent rig that would do stuff my dad likes to work on. I don't know if he would get it or not as he doesn't like ording online, but maybe this could be different.

Basically he doesn't do anything too heavy. He wants to be able to play Blu-ray disks, work with word/excel (big excel calculations mind you), listen to music, e-mail, internet. He isn't a big gamer, but sometimes he would play an internet game or 2.

Basically things that I have in mind are:
- A blu-ray player. I don't think he would burn his own blu-ray disks.
- A sound card to give him that extra sound boost.
- A quad core (no overclocking), or any chipset that would render videos fast. I think AMD might be the way to go as you can get a high clocked quad for quite a nice price.
- A dedicated ethernet card opposed to onboard (wireless?).
- Raid 2 drives together.
- Windows 7.
- Portable case.

He should be keeping his keyboard, mouse, speakers, and screen at the moment. Whenever he would want to watch blu-ray on the bigger tv, a poriable case would be good, or even just an extended cord.

I'm going to build a rig off of newegg.ca and then direct canada. Those might just be the only 2 sites to work with as I have delt with them before.

Anyways, any help would be great. Not picky on any brand, just what would get the job done. If an Intel chip would work better for cheaper, then that would work too.

He does not need a screen, keyboard, mouse/mouse pad, speakers.
For the OS I was thinking of just doing the $30 Student University deal.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it.

( I've been attempting this myself, but I really struggle when it comes to the Motherboard and what I need to look for; especially when coupling it with the Processor. )

Edit: Oh, and he will not be overclocking!

I recently graduated college and I don't have too much spending money so I am attempting to make a half decent workstation on a budget. So far I've spent $670. I am planning to use my old antec full tower and my BFG TECH 650W psu. (may need to upgrade the psu, but hoping it'll be alright) Other potential problem is I have the opteron 8000 series chip which is not officially supported in my mobo. I'm waiting for everything to arrive and see if it'll all work!
I just need to get two heatsinks for my CPU'S and I"ll be all done burning through my savings!!
