Well, its been about two years since my last complete build and a year since I was forced to postpone this due to financial reasons so I've been itching to get back to it. I'll only be keeping my 4870x2 from my current rig, its more then enough until the 5970 comes out and I unwillingly spend more then I should on "upgrading" a new build :p.

I think I have set on a setup ideal for my use which will be some heavy gaming,internet browsing and a bit of photoshop.
The only parts I have not decided on yet are the water cooled parts and I need some help deciding what to purchase.

Hello everyone,

Never built a rig before and i'm ready to dive in with an i7 build. This rig is mainly for gaming use which i would prefer to have crossfire or sli. Any suggestions or changes to my build that i should take into consideration. As i wrote earlier this is my first build ever so i welcome any experience ideas.

Budget build for my Aunt

Ok, my aunt has informed me that she would like a new computer. She's not exactly rolling in the $$ so I'm not sure if she can even afford it right now, but assuming she can scrape together $300-400, would you recommend building now or later? Basically, will there be any major hard ware dropping in price soon?

She's a VERY basic user, just basic internet and word processing for the most part. If she does any gaming at all, it will be stupid little $5 games that aren't graphically intense. She's currently running an ancient machine that is driving her nuts. Windows 2000 or ME (not sure which, but it's definitely pre-XP) combined with ancient parts. She won't be using this to watch DVDs or anything, just the occasional youtube clip.

Here's the plan:

Xigmatek HDT-S963 CPU cooler (bought for $8)
6800GT (worth around $10-15?)
80mm case fan (bought for $2)
Brand New Antec Earthwatts 500W PSU (worth around $45-50)

$?? - Need a black DVD drive, suggestions?

I'm concerned that the BIOS of that Biostar board will be worthless for overclocking, although one reviewer said he took an E5400 to 3.4GHz. My main concern is the 2.1v memory, I'm wondering if the board has a memory voltage option.... I also have a 2x512MB DDR2 800 1.8v set, but 1Gb is a little weak even for a budget build.

I have access to legit copies of XP Professional x86 and Vista Business x86 through my school's MSDNAA, so OS isn't an issue. Let me know your thoughts, and if you can find better deals!

I Think it might be time for me to get a huge upgrade from my "Piece of sh..." in my sig... and this is also my fist rig.
Anyway, I'm into gaming (MW2, L4D, TF2, Crysis, etc.) and want to do a lot of media aswell. I am also planning on overclocking to ~3.5Ghz.

Peripherals needed: Keyboard (G15), Monitor (VW246H), Headset (gaming with minor music, I haven't chosen anything so far), Mouse Pad (Steel Series 4HD), Sound Card (No clue), HS/F (No Clue) and a copy of Win7 (Win7 Home Premium Retail Upgrade). I DO NOT NEED A MOUSE.

I'm going to be (mostly) gaming (pretty much everything i'm going to do with it), sh.t loads of multi-tasking (yah, really), school work

Well, this will be my first OCN build log...so I'll just ease into it nice and slow.

The idea of building a new rig started with me being away from my current sigrig for quite some time. So with that i started checking into the i7, after being yelled at enough times by my fiance , I decided to put a budget on the build, and have since been leaning to an i5 build and limiting myself to 900shipped, excluding PSU and CD/DVD drive(s). I'm a pretty diehard nvidia fan as well, so I stuck with what I know. The antec 1200 was a personal choice, a friend of mine runs a 1200 and I absolutely love it, so, I had to get my own.

This rig won't see much stress, a little OCing (temps willing) and some gaming (COD4 MW2 TF2) nothing too strenuous. Not to mention the basic web browsing and photoshop...perhaps some folding:drum:

I have some drives and PSUs lying around I'll use, most likely look into a new PSU sometime down the road as well. the total came to 856 and some change thanks to some combos and specials also comes along with $40 in MIBs.

I hope to have the parts start coming in around friday...hopefully be able to start the build on monday night, so wonderful having Newegg split up where stuff ships from (TN, NJ and CA). Other than that I have a few blue cathodes and a few other LED fans lying around I'll try to work into the build.

An inexpensive upgrade for my kids' rig

I was due to upgrade my daughter's rig. I plan to put Win7 64bit on it and she is using it more frequently as she gets older.

I have a thermalright Ultima 90i for cooling so 450 FSB with this chip and board (netting 3.6 ghz easily) makes it a pretty solid bundle.

For $520 CAD for all 4 components, pretty decent upgrade (Especially considering I was able to sell the original parts for $400.

ok so here is the thing i was happy with my system i had an asus p5q deluxe and an q6600 go and i was happy until one day my brother spilled soda all over it and killed my system fortunately i was still under warranty for my motherboard thank you frys so they did not have my mobo so they were all like we can give you an i7 board so i was like huummm sure why not and this is were the story begins.

so i started so called modding my case but it was a big fail here are some shots of the attempts but um yeah i still got what i wanted so i am going to stick with what i got its not like it can be repaired right.

so yeah if there is blue a hole was cut.

it looked alright but i am going for a different look so i was like ehhhh i dont like it so i took it back and got this

New Webserver Build

So, as some people may remember I was decommissioning my old web server. I've decided to move from a Celeron E1200 + microATX P5KPL-CM to a Pentium Dual Core E2180 + P5Q, sum total of $100 purchased from PhaedraCorruption. :D

To start with, let's say goodbye to the old web server.

Note the old case front, a sturdy AOpen job I got for free from my work's discard bin way back. :)

The insides are a cable management nightmare with that bloody huge RAID controller but I did use round cables I bought at NCIX about a year back to try and improve things a bit.

Finally you can see a top view of all the bits and bobs I pulled out:

I'd posted a few days ago asking if a lappy my cousin gave me was worth fixing up for my niece...from the looks of what I've seen online--it isn't.

I just ordered my Megahelms today and told my girl ... before she could explode I told her I was already looking into a cheap build for my niece ... it worked.

So.

Here I am.

Things I have :
1 P4 cpu @ 2.8 GHz <--This is questionable as is it's very old
2 GB generic (but brand new) "stand by" RAM @ 800MHz 6-6-6-18
92mm Vendetta after Mega arrives
1 Tube OCZ Freeze
1 230w Dell psu <--Little connectors and questionable quality also
1 IDE optical drive
1 IDE 80GB hard drive
1 Gigabyte IDE cable with only one connector so one of the above IDE's is
S.O.O.L.
1 6-foot tall girlfriend that's extremely hot but mad
1 pack of smokes

So, I figure run the P4 til it dies then get a new E5200. Buy a cheap case with/and psu.... Get a mobo with onboard then giver her my 9500GT after I grab a 5750 or 5770. I'd prefer a Gigabyte board as I'm familiar with the bios and plan to give it a friendly oc.

Prefer new stuff for the warranty.

Here's what Ive got down:
EP43 UD3L 80 bucks.

Tornado Case 40 bucks. Has shiny things.

Corsair 400w psu 50 bucks.

Debating whether or not to just get the E5200.

What do you think.

Hi OCN i'm really confused what to build :(.

I have a weird scenario right now. My usage of my computer really varies from day to day. I do a lot of web work, used to do a lot of gaming and normal computer stuff.

My old rig was;

Q6600 @ 3.8
Asus P5K-Premium
4GB Ram @ 1200Mhz
8800GT which in all honesty was good enough for me - However i'm one of those types of people who love too have all the pretty graphics up.

Now, i'm currently using my laptop [Sig rig] and in all honesty it does what i need it too - BUT do remember i'm not gaming or hosting severs like i used too either. I'm running a 22inch and 17 inch of this. It's more like my desktop replacement.

I don't want to down grade [especialy from my laptop rig]

I want Quad core, but not sure if to go for a Phemon 2 or a 775Quad or I5?

I would like the I5 as it allows me to have crossfire and SLI [assuming i get a high end board] So i can change my mind later on

And here's my other problem, if i do build a PC i dont want cheep parts. I want a high end Mobo for futurebility.

Help Me OCN.

THE RELATIVELY-ULTIMATE BUILD: PART III ($2,250 Budget)...

I started a thread just like this one about 2 years ago and it was very successful. I was able to get very valuable input from OC members back then and my intent with this thread is to achieve the same level of collaboration in helping me build the ultimate system of the century :D )

I started thinking about upgrading my system about 2 months ago. My intent was to upgrade my CPU only, which I did to a quad core, but then I thought about it some more and decided to upgrade my entire system. It creeped up on me and caught me by surprise, it happened so fast, oh my.

Anyway, my budget is about $2,250, and I expect to offset the total cost of the new system by selling the parts that I don't need from the old system. I intend to keep my case and power supply, but everything else will need to be replaced.

I already decided on the monitor, (2) SAMSUNG 2443BWT. I wanted to get input from you guys on what you would purchase for the new system if you had the budget. I want to go with DFI mobo and an Intel CPU, but I'm open to other suggestions as well. Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, i am in need of pictures from someones build log. I am currently preparing a speech and powerpoint for my public speaking class and i am demonstrating how to build a computer. I took pics of my pc when i built it 2 years ago but i didnt take enough of them to cover all my topics. I really do not want to rip this new computer apart due to the fact that it has a warranty that i do not want to void as of yet. I will give credit to whoever provides me with the pictures i need in my presentation and i will also give rep to you as well for helping me out.

The pictures i need are as follows:

A collective picture of a motherboard, processor, powersupply, videocard, memory, hdd and disk drives. Can have other components in the pic as well.

i need pictures of each of them being installed into the computer.

I would also prefer to have a picture of the system when everything is fully installed in the computer.

Well, this was my first build and I have been researching the build for a little over a year, started out with an e8500 for the CPU and it grew into an i7, glad I waited. This build consists of:

Well, I am definitely pleased with it. Temps on load don't go over 70C and that's with a 4GHz overclock and HT enabled so I am very pleased with the Mega Shadow. I also have a bunch more pictures uploaded if anyone wants to see any other part of the build.

Later plans are to wall mount the HP as it's used mainly for media and temp monitoring. I also have an 8500GT in my previous PC I may use for PhysX. I know it's not the best GPU for it, but I figure it's better than nothing.

The worst i7 system in the world?

When my P5Q died in a BIOS update failure, I had an opportunity to upgrade to i7, which I took gladly. I have taken possession of my hardware, and it's time to perform the upgrade.

The problem is that all I'm actually upgrading is my motherboard, CPU, and RAM. I'm going to have an i7 920 (a used chip, known to hit up to 4.3 GHz), a brand new fresh-from-RMA P6T Deluxe (that has already broken one of the PCI-e x16 retention tabs), and 6 GB of Patriot 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM, paired up with a 640MB 8800GTS and 32-bit Windows XP. My upgrades to Windows 7 and a new video card are planned for around Christmas, but this upgrade wasn't exactly planned in advance. My upgrade plan was for a video card in Christmas, an OCZ Agility in spring, and an i7 next summer.

Something this build will be able to resolve, finally, is how well a Black Ice Extreme 240mm radiator can cool an i7 with a Swiftech Apogee GTZ and MX-2 thermal compound. My GPU is on a radiator that has kept it very cool for some time now, so I consider it a known quantity. FOR SCIENCE!

So, as I go 'under the knife' and install my hardware, let me ask you: is this, or is this not, probably the worst i7 system in the world, short of one of those Shuttle ITX barebones?
