Question on 640GB Black

Im going to be installing my two 640GB Blacks this weekend. I seem to remember some sort of setting that would cause the drive to perform at a lower level. For the life of me I cant seem to remember what it was or how to check to see if its disabled/enabled.

Anyone know?

Setup:
1 - 500GB Seagate - for Vista Business 32

My problem:
I want to scan my RAID setup due to my frequent use of USB flash drives which I use on public computers but the thing is I have a Kaspersky from a Asus motherboard, which I use as my main antivirus but Kaspersky can only be ran on Vista.

From my current loadup, booting in from my Windows 7 RC 64 I can view my other hard drive. I have tried booting from my other hard drive but I get BSoD after the loading screen of Vista solution to the problem is to change the hard drives into a IDE configuration rather than RAID but in My Computer it cannot read the other RAID array and views it as a unformatted single drive.

I'm looking for a solution that will help me get the drive working on Vista since I'll have to switch back anyways and there are files from the drive that I need to access.

All help is appreciated :D

btw when you short stroke an HD, do you just have one partition and the rest is unallocated or is it another partition?

I was looking at HDs, and i right now have one that is in my sig, and I want to do raiding, would it be worth the time and money to raid 4 7200 rpm drives like the one i have already? Or should i wait until i am old to get the 10k rpms drives? Also can i download a good raid driver or use the one i can download from the MB site onto a flash drive and setup raid 0 that way? last question on my mind right now, I was looking and drooling over the 15k rpm HD what is the difference in the Sata, and all the other ones like ultra etc that are on the 15k? do they still just hook up using a sata cable? thank you for putting up with my noob self.

1: readyboost
2: to hold my resume, and maybe some other small files that I need handy, but absolutely need to not ever be corrupted or lost.
*note* my 2 year old son got a hold of my other which was inserted in the top of my case. It was destroyed, so, sturdiness is a factor.

So, I lost my 8gb jump drive that could potentially have had tax info on it, in addition to some work stuff. I think i deleted the tax stuff, but now that its gone, its driving me nuts!

I'm paranoid that there was indeed tax stuff on there, anyways, I just bought a pny flip drive with no damn software (1st jump drive ive ever owned with NOTHING on it)

Basically I want something free or pretty that will allow me to encrypt either a file, a partition on the jump drive or the whole thing, that will run from the jump drive, and when double clicked prompt for a password, much like the kingston blackbox stuff, I don't want to pay $250 for one of those drives though. LOL

I also plug this into many computers all over the place, i don't want to have to install software in order to open the folder.

Anyone have any suggestions? should i try to return this thing and buy one of the datatraveler lockers or something from newegg for less?

thanks!

I've tried defragmenting the drive with Auslogics and Defraggler, as well as Chkdsk. I think I shouldn't have defragged, but what's causing this? I've kicked it over a few times by accident but it was still working.

Anyway, do I need the exact same hard drive with the exact same revision in order to run raid 0? Also, if I don't need the same revision, can it be 2 different size drives, I mean I have a 250gb Seagate, but I wanna get a 500gb or a 1TB, can I raid that with my little 250gb? Thanks.

It's only this game as far as I can tell. I'm running some analysis with HDTune right now.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I defrag once a week, so that's not the issue. I might try installing this on the Program files partition of my Caviar Black 1TB and see if that fixes it. Any chance I'm looking at a failing HDD?

70$ CAD + free shipping for WD 640AAKS, is this good deal?

I was looking to get the WD 640AALS because I read that they were very good (found some for 70$). I am planning to get two in RAID 0. So what is the difference between AALS and AAKS? Which is better?

I was also considering getting an SSD for the OS, anybody know of any not too expensive ones (preferably not MLC, 30 - 64GB).
