Im moving all the PCs in the house, parents desktop, downstairs laptop, my rig and my G50 notebook, to Windows 7. I want to keep the last backup of all these PCs running vista just incase. Then store these on a CD/DVD. I have gone through for downstairs laptop and set the WHS to remove all except the latest one.

Does this method remove all info associated with previous backups? Is there a better way to manage the backups and is there away to move the ones I want to keep off for storage?

Thanks in adance.

This one uses my Skulltrail motherboard and dual QX9775s that Intel gave me for a previous build. It has Raid 1+0 Western Digital Velociraptors
Build log:
This puppy housed in a Danger Den Tower 26.

I am adding legs as the server will sit behind a window in our lobby that separates the lab from the lobby. The wall extends about 10" up the the beginning of the window. I want the clients to have a clear view of the rig.

Attaching the legs with on of my favorite tools . . . .

Nice and shiny:

I am picky about screws (do not like Philips prefer socket head for looks) so I buy them in bulk from McMasters:

The downside is they do not sell them in all the sizes Danger Den uses so I have to cut them down sometimes:

I also prefer colored fasteners when possible. They I either bought or had powder coated. I hope to buy an anodizing kit this Summer when I can afford it so I can do my own hardware including things like ioplates:

Here is the case so far . . . .moving slow today as I am under the weather.

[B]
My PSU has one side like looks McNasty like an anal fissue (the other sides are nicely air-brushed) so I decided to do a little ghetto mod to it. I will layer mesh over some UV blue that I will bend into an shape to make a new side cover. I will put in some UV leds behind it probably wiring them to the inside of the psu.

First, here is the starting shot:

After I cut off the offending end:

Measuring out the mesh:

Got the mesh on, will redo the C channel to square the top part out later.

Side panel design for laser rastering:

Did sleeving the final tubing today (came out a tad sloppy but it works):

Leak tested and boots into bios. Enough for tonight. Tomorrow make sure it boots up to Server 2008. I will get the raid setup after PDXLAN.

After this rig, onto the water-cooled Xbox.

I can only imagine that security would be easier in some manner but only with an ESXi type virtualization software.
Done some reading and I just do not see the point but I hear people doing it but not explaining why.
Along with an old E6700. What exactly is the difference between Intel's Server processors and Desktop processors? A lot of them have the same socket. For instance, I was wondering if this processor would work with that board:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819117127
As long as it's the same socket it should work right? I'm assuming it also has to be 65nm because of the chipset?

My boss is wanting to get rid of some old hardware taking up room in his office at home, one of which being an old server.

From what he told me off the top of his head it's a dual xeon based server. Now, from what he told me the processors on it are the single core 2.4GHz Xeons and only 32-bit. From my research, I haven't found a 32-bit single core Xeon that comes clocked at 2.4GHz but I may just be overlooking it. At any rate my question is this:

Assuming that they are in fact 32-bit processors, what practical purpose could this server have beyond a simple home file server?

Only reason I'm even interested in taking him up on this offer is 1) it's free and 2) there's an old cube case in the store I'm going to take and mod to look like a Borg Cube from Star Trek and slap this stuff in there for giggles.

Ok, dumb question time.

Without getting into the specifics of why (partly cost-orientated), I certainly know its possible because I run VM servers on xp, vista and 7 to test stuff out on before actually installing into an "in-service" machine.

My question is, what are the drawbacks of running 7 as a host for Virtual Servers in a real network so that those vm's are actually responsible for fulfilling roles, services, etc. Consider, of course, the host (Win7) will only get a VMware install and nothing else aside from updates (in order to keep it as stable as possible).

Your input is appreciated. :)

Okay, so I used to have a reeeeally old computer I used as a server but I found it wasn't enough anymore so I ditched it. Now I am going to rebuild a new one but I need some pointers on what to use particularly for the case and such, plus I am out of the loop on good server hardware. Below are the requirements for my server:

-must serve routing for all my network (currently 6 machines)
-must act as a fileserver (ftp, nfs, whatever)
-must allow remote access so I can check on it from out of the house(ssh or whatever)
-must be able to host webspace for a couple websites (nothing too large atm but with potential to be large)
-must be able to log all network traffic and store it in log files so I can monitor what goes on (via packet capture like wireshark or whatever)
-potentially may need to host a game server or two (crysis, COD, etc)
-must be rack mountable

So yeah, I was thinking a quad Xeon or two and such but I am not sure. Thoughts anyone?

It has 2 socket 604 Xeons at 3.06GHz with Hyper Threading. Old, I know but for $40 it is pretty sweet, not even that loud.
It is 2U rack mount, will post some photos of it later on

Whenever I turn on Apache, it instantly jumps starts creating tons of processes until I hit my process limit for my VPS. When I try to change the StartServers/MaxClients for Prefork MPM (in apache2.conf), it tells me that I need to adjust the StartServers since the MaxClients is set for 256 (the max). If I change the MaxClients in the Prefork MPM it is simply ignored, because I'm suspecting somewhere else it's set for 256 and my VPS can only have 128 processes running on it, and MySQL and a few other processes always running equal to about another 30-40 processes, so I need to limit apache to only using ~80 processes. I'm not sure why it is instantly jumping to max all the processes, because this wasn't happening yesterday.

edit: turns out i was just getting ddos'd again, nvm....

I just deployed Exchange Server 2007 and I really hate it and simply, It sucks. Exchange Server 2003 is so much better and much more user friendly. Well anyways, let me explain why. Whenever I install Exchange Server 2003, each user account gets a mailbox and I don't have to set anyone up with a mailbox. Exchange Server 2007 on the other hand, does not do that, its just creates a mailbox for the Administrator account. Well, anyways, no problem. I can go in and create the users, but where is the feature that I can create mailboxes for everyone in the Active Directory? Where is the Active Directory snap in that was included with Exchange Server 2003? This is really stupid and I am really angry because now I have to waste weeks creating mailboxes for the 100+ clients I have.

Now, I don't want to sit and create mailboxes for every single user in the Active Directory. I would really like to do what I could do in Exchange Server 2003, which is add users by selecting groups rather than individuals. Is there a way of mass adding users to Exchange Server 2007?

Also, how do I disable the requirement of a certificate for Outlook Web Access. I don't want nor I do not need a certificate. They are expensive. I would like to have SSL for access to Outlook Web Access but I don't want to have to apply certificates for them.

Hi all,

I'm in the market for a new server since my old one blew up* on me the other night. It seems heat killed it*, so I've been looking for something cool-running, quiet and small. I first started looking at Mini-ITX systems but then just thought about the Net-top systems that have sprung up. The basic specs for these seem to be Intel Atom N230/N270 (single core, 1.6GHz, 512KB L2, 533MHz FSB), 1-2GB DDR2, 160GB HDD. That seems pretty good for the ballpark of £150-£180. However I have seen a few newer ones come in that have the dualcore Atom. These market for £220-£300. Is it worth the extra for the performance? I will be running:

Windows 2003 as a Domain Controller
Active Directory
Exchange 2003

1-2 Inboxes with full Mobile and Collaboration facilities
1-5 Websites with mixed content

This will mostly be for testing purposes to do with my Uni course (BSc Computer Network Management) as my last server was just a hobby, but now I am studying, I thought why not use it to help me learn?

So, to whittle it down to a question or two:

1) Will the Single core Atom and 1GB RAM give sufficient performance running the above, for £150? Or is it worth the extra for the second core (and in some cases, 320GB HDD but thats not as important to be honest!)

Or can anyone recommend other setups that are small, cool but capable of the above?

Input is appreciated guys, thanks

* = The server was a 2.8GHz Celeron D, with 1HD and a fanless Silverstone NT01 HS, cooled by the 12CM PSU fan. I one day found the system not responding, checked it and the HD light was full and power light was off but the system was still powered up. I think heat killed it as where it was didn't have the best airflow but due to the size of the case we didnt have anywhere else to put it. It was also near a radiator that came on with the winter now approaching, so it seems heat was the cluprit. Whether it was the PSU and Mobo that died, I do not know.

I have a Q6600 processor and running x64 versions of Windows and virtual pc. I have tried using the ISO in a virtual drive with Daemon tools as well as the DVD in my physical drive. VT is enabled in BIOS.

I searched the forum for the error and nothing came up so I dont think this has come up before on these forums.

I'll add that when booting the local machine itself with the CD there is no error, it installs fine.

I'm hoping this is just something simple that I've missed but even a google search didn't shed any light on this and V-PC SP1 is supposed to support Server 2008 as a guest OS.
