and tell me if it's worth the extra cash to get it over the regular? I'll be running 6 120mm sythe ultra kaze fans in the case besides the one in the heatsink itself which i may end up switching out to an ultra kaze as well so cooling shouldn't be much an issue in that sense.

I have two identical cheap (and quiet) fans attached to my megahalems. Adding the second fan seems to cause about a 5 degree temperature drop, but it seems to make negligable or no difference which way around the second fan goes, so long as at least one of them is facing inward. Having it push-pull is complementary to the way my rear case outtake fan goes (turning the case fan around causes it to make a growling noise for some reason, I don't think it's meant to go that way), and if I have it push-push, the air belches out of the top of the megahalems and out of a grill in the side of the case (I intentionally got this case due to this fact); if it's push-pull I don't feel much air flowing out from this direction. However, as I said it seems to make little difference in the long run. You'd think with such a funky design that it would make more of a difference which way you attach the fans to it and which direction the air flows out of it.

I'm wondering if anyone knows some advantage to having it one way or the other. Right now I can't achieve very high speeds with these slow fans without having the comp sitting ~50 idle and going above 80 under load (it seems to have gotten slightly worse since buying a new case and reapplying some supposedly superior thermal paste--not sure which is the culprit), and I'm thinking of investing in something better. I'm wondering if there are diminishing returns on the really fast fans (and I could do without the noise!) due to the heat from the heatsink not having enough time to transfer heat to the air that is pushing through it. If anyone knows of a fan with good price/performance/noise ratio, I'd like to hear about it. The pair I have now are these.

I'm replacing my Scythe slipstream fans on my megahalem because they don't move a lot of air when turned down and developed an annoying buzzing  Anyways I was looking at the SilverStone fans because they come with a controller and seem to have relatively the same specs as the Scythe. My choices are:

FM123 120x25mm
17.5dB & 40.7cfm @ 900rpm
39.5dB & 106.3cfm @ 2600rpm
Static pressure: 4.55
My thoughts: Better static pressure than the FM121 but slightly louder and slightly less cfm.

FM122 120x32mm
21dB & ??cfm @ 800rpm
42.2dB & 107cfm @ 2400rpm
Static pressure: 5.89
My thoughts: Highest static pressure but also the loudest at max rpm, and doesn't get as quiet as the others.

FM121 120x25mm
17dB & ??cfm @ 800rpm
39.5dB & 110cfm @ 2400rpm
Static pressure: 3.26
My thoughts: Quietest and most cfm, but least pressure.

With the heat sinks on my ram I can't fit a 120x38mm which is why I considered the FM122 at only 32mm. I keep reading that more static pressure is a good thing but I still don't really understand it. :headscrat . I'll probably only crank it up to max while gaming so the amount of air is moves while turned down is an important factor. I don't know if the thickness will help with that or not. Keeping that stuff in mind, which fan would you buy and why? Will the static pressure outweigh and resulting cooling effects outweigh the increased noise?

Currently, in my sig RiG, I have set the Megahalems as my heaysink, however, after talking a bit with a friend that owns a PC shop, he pointed out that the Noctua U12P-SE1366 is a very good heatsink which comes with two 120mm fans (this is for the version compatible with intel 1366 socket). So, curious as a kid, I did a bit of research on it and turns out that it actually is quite a good and silent heatsink!

Here is a review that has a couple of tests that compare it with other heatsinks. Sadly, the Mega is not one of the heatsinks added to comparison table.

Thoughts?

I'm personally thinking to go for it with my only concern being whether or not this heatsink needs lapping or not (as long as it is not extensive).

I ended up putting my S-FLEX as an intake in front, and mounted the antec as a side exhaust. I have a leftover 90mm fan, if anyone has any ideas for that? I wanted to mount it over my HDD's, but I can't think of how I'd secure it, rubber band? :p

Thanks for any advice.

Just installed this. Quick thoughts:

-I've heard the lapping on the newer TRUE's like Rev. C is much better. I found my TRUE to be slightly convex in the middle, which might have been fine had my IHS not been lapped.

-Installed it stock with two GentleTyphoon AP-15's

-Used the Baram mounting system with the TRUE's X Bracket. The BARAM uses thumb nuts with the screws coming from the bottom:

-Pretty easy to install with the Baram system but I suspect the pressure is not strong enough. I can still twist the TRUE with a medium amount of force.

-The fan clips are retarded! Way harder to use than they should be... any other heatsink I've used, Baram, Mugen 2, Core Contact Freezer, have had much better fan clip systems...

-So instead of using fan clips I used a couple of the Thermalright shrouds, which were easier to get on but not as easy as it should be:

-Compared to my Baram setup with the exact same fans (GentleTyphoon AP-15 at full speed) and TIM (ICD 7), I'm getting about 1C worse load. This is disappointing.

Hopefully some of you found this interesting. I'll be lapping and washer modding this baby with the original mounting system in the near future. Will update this thread then with the results.

Just a little hint about the Copper core Intel stock coolers for LGA 775 sockets, i seriously recommend lapping it!
I know its hard to polish a turd but..... it dropped my load temp from 49C to 31C
I got my Copper core for $5 and it out performs the Gigabyte Volar that i had 2 months ago! However i did add a few modifications to the cooler....
Cooler when bought "Second Hand"

My dual 120mm Mod

The fan mod was required for my PC as i had to expand the fan width to reach my intake tubing on the side. the Intel fan was at 1300rpm 100% CPU load and the dual LED 120's are @ (Sys Fan 521rpm) (CPU Fan 1100) so those Intel fans can go pretty hard for what they are :O
Happy Modding
