when i put the simplified chinese version of windows 7 in my cart though, it says it takes up 3GB where the english version only took up 2.1GB.
Am i wrong to think that the intended language doesn't matter?
just trying to make sure, so i don't waste a download :)

It did not, this means the signatures are not stored in the program folder. Does anybody know where it keeps the signature file on the hard drive?

Hey guys I was hoping someone could help me with this little problem I'm having.

I just installed my caviar black and did a clean install of Windows 7 on it. Following that, I plugged in my old 250gb seagate (cause I'm still going to use it). I transferred all my important files over to the caviar and I want to reformat the entire seagate and erase everything on it including my previous windows 7 installation. Is there a way to do this because since C is a system drive there is no option of "format" when I right click.

also when I first start the computer, it goes to my PREVIOUS installation of win7 by default, how do I make it go to the new one cause I obviously have to be on the new installation if I want to reformat the old hard drive

thanks for any help

I've formatted and reinstalled windows, and after one night of my pc running fine it went back to the same behavior. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

So, the question is as to whether or not I should use a distro of Linux or Windows Home Server (I'm pretty sure I can get it through MSDN).

Let me just make this clear - This is not a thread to post "omg linux is amazing does everything and is free." I'm really new to linux and I tried ubuntu and honestly it was really different. I don't really want to spend too much time on it, all it's going to do is be a box to download stuff and transfer it to my sig rig.

So, where should I start?

I have a client that does intense market trading, I already have a system planned out for him however we are stuck at one issue. How will we implement a secure software solution for him that works.

He currently has Windows XP installed however his stock trading software keeps causing errors through Java, Excel, Word, etc. So, he can't do much with it because it keeps crashing. We thought it was software, well, it wasn't as I reinstalled Windows and he is still crashing. It could be the trading software, and it crashes because of the lack of resources which is why we have another system planned out.

He was talking to me about getting a Mac asking if they were more secure, and I told him to stay clear and try to use a Linux system with WINE emulation. Obviously WINE for his trading programs and Office, and only that what he needs.

The problem is, I am having trouble envisioning how this would be implemented. I can setup, install, and (minimally) configure Linux and WINE together, but beyond that, I can't do much with Linux. I can show him how he needs to run the programs that he uses under WINE and what not, but securing it is a different story. I would need some help with this. We also want to know if this will efficiently work and if the stock trading programs will be compatible with WINE. I mentioned to him that WINE can run certain Video Games which require much more calculations per second then his spreadsheets run.

What he needs:

A secure system

A database that grabs, reloads, extracts, takes data at a certain time

Emulation program that will allow him to run his trading programs and Office (WINE, Crossover, etc)

Any room for possible expansion.

Hardware wise, I listed out a:

Intel Duo Core

Gigabyte Motherboard

2 GB of RAM

1 XFX 4650 (So he can hook up multiple monitors)

450W PSU

We need suggestions, advice, and help on how we can make this work.

Would going with Linux be the most effective way, if so, please help me set it up for him. Should we stay on the Windows path and just upgrade him to Vista or 7 and see if hardware updates also help with the issues?

I had tried troubleshooting before, I thought it may have been a corrupt device within Windows originally, so he gave me the go ahead to try and reinstall. I did, and the problem came back.

He is willing to do whatever he needs to get back to trading, but he is only willing to spend money if he is 99 to 100 % positive that it will work without problems.

Any advice?

I am curious I am a fan of Vista and I followed 7 through a bit of the RC and I quit once I started working again.

So I buy Windows 7 Pro x64 and I installed it and I am shocked at what it is like currently to when I RC it and I am curious what your thoughts are on it.

Windows 7 is without a doubt superior to Vista in terms of speed but I have a few beefs with it.

1. Aero

Now I don't mind Aero but I disable it (personal choice) now the issue here is that when you do you get a UGLY grey/blue bar you can't change. (registry fixes etc don't seem to work either)
I must admit I favor Vista "default" look nice and sleek and no Aero.

2. Preview Tabs

So I view this as a "stupid people" feature because I know what is on my toolbar. You cannot disable it yet (and it is ANNOYING for me)
The biggest issue here is in the RC you COULD disable it now it says "vista only" to disable.

3. Right Click - Close
I have no clue why they changed it...it now elevates above the toolbar (this is a minor beef but still its kinda annoying)

4. Control Panel
Why do they no longer have the classic view? I enjoy classic + list. Once again a feature they removed after I quit doing the RC.
(now I know they have a classic like view but its really spaced and imo stupid looking)
5. Toolbar
I liked the default...a lot of the stuff can be disabled but no matter how I "disable" it for some strange reason the bars continue to sort themselves...I don't need my computer rearranging my stuff for me.

This is not a rant mind you but was curious if anyone else felt the restriction Windows 7 seems to have.

I know its suppose to be "new age" but some of the above features have been included from 98+

So you have anything you wish they would add to Windows 7?

Not quite sure why...

I rebooted my computer because I wanted to mess around in Linux, and when it tried to boot GRUB the system flat out restarted.

I figured something happened and GRUB crapped the bed, maybe its something to do with the new version of grub, hopefully its not an HDD thing.

Not quite sure why...

I rebooted my computer because I wanted to mess around in Linux, and when it tried to boot GRUB the system flat out restarted.

I figured something happened and GRUB crapped the bed, maybe its something to do with the new version of grub, hopefully its not an HDD thing.

Unfortunately I can't find my Karmic disk, and the only disk I had, which happened to be intrepid, had crap ATI drivers, and I white screened when it try to enable compositing.

So that means I can't restore grub, and I have to restore using my Windows 7 disk.

I go through the whole repair sequence and restart... still the same problem.

I guess it doesn't work :(

The one bit of good news in all of this is that I actually remembered to stick my home folder on a separate partition, so I sacrificed my root and put Windows 7 on it. :sad-smile

And it worked, and now I'm dual booting Windows 7... for now :devil-smi

My two 36GB Raptors are hard to keep from being full (I like to keep at least 15GB free, I'm lucky to have 2GB) and I want to upgrade to a larger HDD. Don't so much care about speed - so I'll probably just offer someone a straight trade for a 320GB or larger drive.

Either way - my 750GB has a good bit of space still on it. I could easily make a backup ISO of my whole HDD and stick it on there - if that would work and if it's possible.

What's the easiest way to do it? My cousin works for Microsoft and is getting me Windows 7 Home Premium for Christmas, so if there isn't an easy way to do it, I'll probably just wait and do a clean install.

Hi guys,

Okay so today I ran into a slight issue. I wanted to go about installing Windows XP along-side Win7 so that I could play a larger variety of games on my machine that weren't 100% compatible with Win7.

Great, so I shrank my Win7 partition through it's System Administration tool, and I rebooted the machine into the Windows XP installation setup. I let Windows XP format this newly freed up space and do the installation.

This is where problems started to occur.

The machine rebooted as if it was going to go into the Windows XP installation to only give me a "A disk read error occured" and asking me to Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.

I thought, okay, maybe this new installation is conflicting with the boot configurations for Win7. So I went back into the WinXP installation and deleted the partition that WinXP was going to be installed on. That did nothing, and i'm getting the same error.

Fortunately most of my valuable work is either in my Dropbox or on my external hard-drive, but there is one important project file on there that I want to retrieve before I want to do anything drastic, and it's very important that I get ahold of that file.

Files still seem to be on the Win7 Partition of the hard-drive though seeing as it said through the Windows XP installation that there was a smaller amount of space left that was free on the Win7 HDD. Meaning that the information is still there.

I'm just wondering now,
How do I get it working and booting into Win7 again, and how can I recover?

so recently after reinstalling the vista OS on a new mobo i was affected with sound issues. after spending 2 days figguting around with the os i found that the problem was caused by vista auto installing a driver called "2-high definition audio device". so each time i install my c-media drivers for my auzentech card it would conflict with this driver and make me unable to use my mic.

the problem now, each time i remove 2-high definition it just reinstall 4mins later automatically under vista. what can i do to make it stop installing this?

currently, i have both realtek and c-media uninstalled, this is the only way atm to be able to use the mic. i would like a solution to this problem if you have, as this 2-high def is low quality and i would liek to use cmedia to control my playback/recording device.
