Here is a sketch of my room.



I was thinking of moving the desks to the center of the room, on the back wall. Have one l-shaped at one end and then a straight middle desk then another l-shaped desk at the other end. Move my bed to the corner where the desks are now and then setup my home theater area (surround sound, tv, etc) where the bed is now. And then get rid of the fuse ball (pool table in the image).

So, I would have it like this.



I was thinking of doing this for my rig upgrade:

- New Case (HAF 932) - $140
- New Mobo (2x PCIE16 slots) - $120
- Second GTX260 - $180 - Or a cheaper 2x DVI output PCI card
- 3x 22" LCDs - $160 each (matching ones + current one)

Then for desks, since mine is on the edge of giving way, buy this one:

I dub it "Project Wind Tunnel". :D

meticadpa has kindly put his sketchup skills to the task of the conceptual drawings which, so far, yield just these two pics - a 100% wood construction variant and the second, wood for the desk parts and acrylic for the wind tunnel hutch part.

If anyone knows more about airflow engineering than I do I would appreciate comments on mobo orientation, etc. I plan to put two 120mm fans in front and two in back. The dimensions are as follows:

Desk top - 3 feet by 5 feet (approx)
Desk height - 2.5 feet (approx)
Wind Tunnel hutch - 1 foot by 1.5 feet by 3 feet

So far this is purely at the conceptual stage. I ultimately plan to budget about $500 for this come next year as I acquire supplies and convince my dad to help lend his tool-using expertise to the task. :D

It's slowly slowing down, games aren't loading on and off, I get errors when I OC my GTX275 by even 1MHz, I can't play many games a 3.2GHz 2x+GTX275 should be able too, when I play many demanding games my BIOS (for whatever reason) fries, and I have to reset it every day. Yes I just re-installed windows a month ago, it continues to suck.

I think it's time for a near completely, 80%(keep HDD+gfxcrd that's only 4 months old), new system. Your thoughts? Or should I just *ahem* buy(YEAH RIGHT, BUY THATS FUNNY!) a new OS. O noes microsoft don't murder me!

How do you determine load tolerances for desks? They aren't so critical now because LCDs weigh way less than CRTs do, but suppose you wanted to put a computer, printer, etc all on a table. Well, how do you know when the thing will break?

Also am curious because I have a very very vague idea of custom building a desk with a sort of "wind tunnel" cabinet (Air cooling! :D ) where a mobo would be along with attendant parts. Well, the acrylic to look down onto the mobo would weaken the top of the desk, but by how much? Knowing the load tolerance would help a lot.

Has anyone used that desk? I'm wondering since I've been out looking for a new desk, since my old one is horribly uncomfortable, and I can no longer want to move my keyboard to in front of my monitor just to get a little room to write...

My current desk is huge and a bit of an annoying shape, it's a corner desk but with an irregular curve, the size is 161cm by 121cm a little to big, I'm looking for something a little more sleek as this one is a light wood colour, and fits with nothing in my room.

Now I think I have decided to go with Intel this time around. I realize the costs are a lot higher but for performance I think it wins!

I have compiled a list of parts/products as seen below. I am not ready to purchase these items as I still need 2 weeks or so to get the amount of money in the bank but I am starting to get a good idea of the good products out there.

$3000 Intel Build - Core i7 920 w/ Asus P6T Deluxe v2.0



$4000 Build - Core i7 975 w/ Asus P6T Deluxe v2.0

So that is what I have come up with so far for Intel builds. This build would be a computer that I hope will last a very long time and be a top performer in all the games to come. I do have a few questions / concerns I would like to have answered as I am still semi-new to building my own computers.

1) I want to have a SLI setup and I currently have a GTX 285. I didn't really want to buy 2 new GTX 295's so I opted to just use my current GTX 285 and buy an identical one and run them in SLI. Is it worth investing in 2 new video cards to run in SLI or Crossfire?

2) My current GPU makes a whining / high pitched dog whistle noise when under high load. I wear headphones so its not a big deal but I was wondering if there was a way to remove this noise. I read lots of people have similar issues and its just coil vibrations which is normal.

3) Do you think I should goto Intel or stick with AMD? I have always been an AMD person due to their good price per quality ratio. This would be my first Intel build.

4) After looking at both my Intel builds do you see anything you would change? I want a top notch quality enthusiast/gamer/photoshop computer that I won't want to replace for at least 2-3 years.

5) Do you think I should use any parts from my current system on my next platform to save $$? I posted my specs above and it is a fairly decent system. I did want to try DDR3 Memory tho

6) Is Windows 7 worth buying @ that price?

7) Is it worth investing in a Solid State Drive? The only concern I had was the size of them. I download quite a bit so I would need the space! Also I have no idea what Raid0 setup means so please do explain

Basically I will have lots more questions / concerns to talk about on this thread. I am about to invest a huge sum of money and I want the best performance I can get!

Please review both builds as well as my current build and let me know what suggestions you have for upgrades. I know a lot of you have tons of experience with building so that is why I am here.

I look forward to your product choices whether it be an AMD or Intel build
