I start with the basics, I have about £300 maybe a bit more if needed on upgrading my current system. I'm pretty sure i need a new motherboard because I keep recieving erros when more than one hard drive is connected, which I could pin point any errors with the drives and been through 4 now.

I also think my processor is holding me back so possibly looking into a new one of them. I've hit a barrier at 3.1ghz with mine no matter what I try I cannot keep it stable even at reasonable temps. Not sure whether to go to the dark side of Intel or not?

The Athlon II's look good but not sure how much performance is lost with no L3 cache if any? AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition 3.1GHz 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 looks nice or should i actually go for a quad core.

Secondly I do want another hard drive something fast not Maxtor ( personal dislike to them had bad experiences with them).

But I'm open to suggestions or to just stick to what I have, it will be mainly used for gaming, music/media, surfing the net.

Which leaves me with two questions:
Which is best at stock?
And which is best at these settings, 3.2GHz for the C2Q6700 and the Athlonx4620, and 4.0GHz for the Phenom720?
I'm asking because one article mentioned but didn't show that the Athlonx4 didn't get much better with OCing(as in it lost ground to the PH2's when at matching OCs). And also, because of the whole no L3Cache and Low L2Cache.

The project goal was to provide hardware and software components for a small and medium enterpirse. This enterprise specialized in sellling medical devices. So where and how can I find these hardware components?

More details about the enterprise:

There are 2 partners, 1 secretary , 1 sales manager , 2 sales executives and 1 accountant

the sales team traves frequently to meet the suppliers and cleints and they need internet access, email, file sharing, and they welcome technologies that would makie their communication more effective

The rest of the staff will normally work in the office and each of them requires a computer wirh emal, word processing, spread sheet and other software applications that increase productivities.

thanks you in advance for anyone who is reading this and could offer help.

With tests like OCCT/Linpack and Core Damage easily pointing out just how "stable" that overclock really is i want to know just how many of you here use multiple tests?

What are the tests you use and in what order? for how long do you feel is long enough for your overclocks to be deemed stable? and please mention any other info you feel relevant to the matter

Edit: I am not to fond of the outcome with the poll options but i can't fix it now :o

So far, I'm only looking to upgrade my CPU, mobo, and RAM.

It needs to be a quadcore, and I'm looking @ 8GB of RAM.

I put together a little something a while back which consisted of an i5, forget what mobo, and 8GB (2GBx4) DDR3 RAM. It was in the ballpark of $450-$500. All of these prices were taken from Newegg.

So, what can I get (AMD/Intel, 8GB RAM, ATX mobo) for $450-$500?

Hello everyone!

I'm on the market looking to buy a new PC. A friend of mine recently bought one and seeing what his machine can do, I'm feeling out of the loop.

I currently have a AMD 64x2
4200 Processor
2.21 ggz, 2GB ram
Nvidea 6800 card which is starting to crumble apart and overheat like crazy.

So here's my situation

I can't decide If i should buy a PC from Dell, or Alienware. I know that Alienware has had ALOT of reviews of being overpriced (keep in mind I can't tell what's good and what isn't) I'm strictly a gamer with almost no knowledge on what I should and shouldn't buy.

I put a package together and let me know what you guys think

Alienware Aurora Alienware Aurora Desktop
2nd Processor Intel® Core™ i7 920 (2.66GHz, 8MB Cache)
Memory 6GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1067MHz - (3 x 2048MB
Video Cards Single 1.8GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260
Hard Drive 500GB - SATA-II, 3Gb/s, 7,200RPM, 16MB Cache HDD
Operating Systems Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
Optical Drive Single Drive: 24X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability
Sound Card Creative Sound Blaster® X-Fi™ Xtreme Audio
Hardware Support Services 1 Year Limited Hardware Warranty with In

Killer NIC Killer Xeno™ Pro

Cooling Option Alienware® High-Performance Liquid Cooling

Also comes with a set of Surround sound speakers X540 5.1

For 2200 bucks (Canadian)

I would like to hear from some of you people and your ideas on what I should, or shouldn't do.

(Please keep in mind, I know that buying parts individually and assembling - Or having someone else do it it my case - Is cheaper. I'm ok with spending a few hundred more dollars to have the thing delivered to my doorstep in a few days. The bother of having to shop around and ask for products with a whole bunch of letters and numbers in their name that will come out as gibberish to me)

Thanks everyone!!

He had a strict budget, so we wanted to maximize his desktop while keeping the budget around $400. Here's where we are, having just ordered the parts:

He also has this case and this Hard Drive.

The total money he spent on this was $280 or so. He'll get a video card on Black Friday or that event on December 1st if nothing special occurs on Black Friday.

I'd say, for less than $400, he's got a solid build.

Hey everyone,
I'm looking to build an inexpensive computer to replace my parents old clunker. Currently they are using an old pentium 4 with 512 MB of ram. The operating system alone is barely functional at this point and I thought it might be a nice christmas gift. I would like it to be capable of very basic gaming, though my dad only plays Tiberian Sun, which released in 1999, and Bejeweled on facebook. Any suggestions would be awesome.
Not looking to spend more than a few hundred dollars.

BUT, since i see my mobo only supports cpus up to 125w, do I have to worry about issues when volting and OCing the cpu? I'm hoping to push as close to the 4ghz line as I can on my mugen2.

To be concise, will a 125w rated mobo have issues running an OC'd 125w cpu?
