Hey peeps,

Well, i'm getting my new rig over the next month or two. Getting case and PSU for christmas :-D Brothers FTW!

Specs

Case - Antec 902 Nine Hundred Two Ultimate Gaming Case

Proc - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) (will be overclocked to about 3.6GHz)

Cooler - Noctua NH-U12P CPU Cooler

Memory - OCZ Blade Series 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-9200C5 Low Voltage Dual Channel x2

GPU - Waiting probably for the GT300 series to come out before I get the card

Hard drives - Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache x2 in RAID0

Optical - Sony Optiarc AD-7240S 24x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter

mobo - Asus P5Q Deluxe Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Now, I need a PSU for this, I was going to get the Corsair HX520 because of the triple rail, but they don't sell these anymore. After reading a bit here I think the HX850, but this only has a single rail. Is this going to be a problem for OC'ing or not?

Any advice on the build would be appriciated.

Cheers

Comps.

Could I do it without blowing my system, taking in to consideration the CPU power usage as well during games? It would only be for the short term til I can afford a decent quality SLI PSU.

The thing is pretty quiet anyway, so I'm wondering if I actually came out better off. It seems this has 4 12v rails with 18-19a, whereas the silentpro has a single rail at 50a. I haven't read much else on the realpower yet (whereas, ironically, I did tons of research on the silentpro before failing to buy it). Wondering if anyone can tell me if I would have missed out on anything.

Also, anyone have any idea what just happened? after the pop and flash there was the smell of electronics in the air. Computer (one in sig) was built in May of this year. Have never had an issue with it until now. Could dust in the psu maybe do such a thing? It sits on the bottom of the case

vx450w

the good-
fully sleeved cables, green matches color scheme :D, only $65! and alot more energy efficient

the bad-
only 6 4pin molex, only 1 pci-e, and not modular

hx620w

the good-
lots of all connectors,MODULAR!,heard lots of super great things about stability and great power output, future proof for a long while

the bad-
really really expensive, not all cables sleeved(but they are black flexible concealable cables)

i plan to start a new build with this as the first purchase, this psu will have to run an xfx gts 250 (maybe 2), a quad core(maybe i7), a velociraptor (1-3), and support high amount of OC'ing.

so what do you think?

Since beginning the thread, I think I've narrowed it down to the PSU. By adding an old PSU, my PC boots and starts properly. When I go back to the old PSU, nothing happens. Is this likely to have messed with my PC in any way?

Is there any way of testing the PSU?

Thanks a lot,

I have a problem with my Gateway computer GT5026E, i have a Nvidia GEforce 7800GT graphics card and every time when my computer starts it says my power supply is not powerful enough to power up my graphics card so its running at half capacity to avoid damage, my computer has a ATX 300watt power supply and i want a 450watt+ to run my computer better because it is very noticeable in the power difference, i looked online i think on the gateway website and it mentioned if i use a aftermarket power supply and not a Gateway brand that it could fry my computer and then i would have to buy a new one which would be bad, i am pretty sure its just so you will get scared and buy one of theirs but i did not want to risk it and called them up, they told me that the highest they have is what i have, a 300watt power supply and could not help me any further than that, so i am asking for advice on if that is true or not and what is a good affordable power supply that will fix my problem if it is not true.

Thanks in advance for anyone who helps.

I'm looking at either a 330W or 350W.

Here's what i'm gonna put in the pc:

Athlon X4 620 (no oc)
1x WD green
1x 320GB laptop hdd (sata 5400rpm)
1 pci-e tuner card
1x bd reader
2x1GB ddr2 1066MHz (may change to 2x2GB ddr2 800mhz)
2x Yate Loon fans low speed
and possibly a new gpu.

on the eXtreme PSU calculator, with an hd4770, it says i only need a 250ish watt psu. I'm just wondering if a 350W or 380W will be fine enough to handle this PC. also, no over clocking.

whats peoples views on this. will i need more or am i safe?
judging by the reviews of the hx850 it looks like a very good performer
