I have a few concerns about my data and such, and would like to pose a few questions.

First, the hardware:
1.) Western Digital Caviar (SE? Blue? Black? I don't know) 320GB SATA
This is my main OS and program drive, I took it out of my 2006 HP Pavilion in 2008. Western Digital has always been solid as a rock for me, so I'm not to concerned about this one, but I was wondering at about what age I should start to worry about this drive failing.

2.) Seagate something 160GB IDE
This is one of two hard drives I found last month in a box. It was formatted to just 137.4GB, so it was installed on a pre-2002 mobo, but I don't know how old the drive itself is. I'm guessing between 2002 and 2005. All I know is that my mother used it and it got a worm (don't worry, I nuked it from Linux). I've moved most of my documents over to this one, but I'm concerned about if it fails soon. Also, around what time period were the drives with the firmware bug made?

3.) Seagate something 200GB IDE
The other one from the box. I don't have anything on this one yet, just reformatted it to NTFS. I really don't know when it's from, it was really weird. See, it was formatted in FAT32 rather than NTFS. I don't know what the OS was, it looked like maybe Windows 98 or ME. I didn't bother to check. But the partition took up a whole 200GB, so it was on a computer from 2002 or later... So why would have one of those OSs on it? I'm confused.

The really disconcerting thing is that when I turn my computer on one of the IDE hard drives makes a "CLACK-klck" noise. Not extremely loud, but louder than I'm used to from a hard drive. I'm not sure which one it is, either. Is this likely an imminent drive failure, or just "primitive" early 2000s technology not having made quiet hard drives yet?

Well, i'm constantly going back and forth to one or the other and i'm looking at either...

1) RAID 0 - EVGA E758 x58 w/ 2x WD6401AALS and a Free Agent 1.5TB 7200RPM

$280 no mobo.

or

2) RAID 5 (leaning towards it) - EVGA E758 x58, but i'm going to get some sort of Perc 5/i RAID card (used from Ebay/here for $100-$150) w/ 3x WD6401AALS

$325-$375 no mobo.

What are the advantages of each setup? Advice and feedback are welcome!

Right now it seems like RAID 5 has no advantages besides being constantly up to date. Although, based upon mathematical calculation, 1.2TB could be transferred to the external in 53 minutes or so. With that I have everything completely backed up, so if more then one of my HDs are destroyed, i'm still safe.

God this is such a tough choice.

Save me Duckie Ho?

Just recently got an Asus Rampage Formula, and one of the things I wanted to do with it is set up a RAID 0 (when I get the drives for it that is), so over the past few days I've been playing around with just about every option in the BIOS. One of the things I did was enable RAID in the SATA configuration just to see what it did. Windows didn't boot which didn't surprise me, and I changed it back to IDE and went back to what I was doing. Now any time I enable RAID, it hangs on boot, with "DET IDE" displayed on the LCD Poster. It does boot with RAID enabled when I have no hard drives attached, but that obviously doesn't do me any good if I'm trying to boot windows. I've cleared CMOS several times and still no help, the only other thing I've yet to try is reflashing the old BIOS back to it or reflashing the current BIOS.

So after fooling around with my drives, it seems that my main drive is whats causing it to hang, its a seagate st3250624ns, and with everything else plugged in it boots, but when that is plugged in, it hangs at detecting the drives. I just dont understand why I was able to get past detection before but not know. No big deal though if I have to remove this drive when I do set up my array.

Hey folks,

I'm looking for an easy way to get RAID5 or 6 level redundancy for a large capacity file server that can have the volume expanded easily and safely. Ie, let's say I start with 4x 2TB WD greens in RAID6. I want to then be able to add another 2TB drive as I please to this volume and have it added to the volume without having to reformat. I know this is possible, but I'm not sure in which environment its best--ie, which OS, hardware level, software level, etc. Hardware would be good, but this is simply for a home file server system so a software solution would be fine too (though I will say it needs to work in the Windows environment as the nature of the file server will also be a HTPC using Windows 7). So, that probably leaves me with hardware level RAID6. The question is, which card... The Dell PERC 6 has that. But I'm not certain if it allows for expanding of the volume. I'm also not certain about the stability of it and drivers in windows 7. I'm open to other suggestions, in fact, I'm hoping for other suggestions.

So a short rehash...

Want:

RAID5 or 6 level redundancy.
Up to at least 8 drive capability. SAS->SATA is ok.
Capability to expand volume (add drives) without reformating. *
Works without issue in Windows 7.

* And I'd really like this to be easy if possible. Ie, just plug in the drive. Go into the RAID bios and expand the volume, or if it can do it from within Windows, whatever. I just want it to be able to add drives to the RAID5 or RAID6 array without having to format and without a big risk of it simply failing during that rebuild. I'm leaning towards RAID6 due to that, as I expect it to eventually grow to up to 8 disks over time. The array is to be used for media serving for a HTPC, hudreds of DVDs will be backed up on this array, so it's not crucial data, just tons of data and it would be a pain to have to move it, rebuild, have the array fail, reformat, etc. Looking for an expandable redundent volume.

I'm really also looking for experience regarding someone who has physically used an expandable array such as I'm describing and has expanded it successfully, and how easy/difficult it was, or any snags/problems encountered doing so.

Or, I'm open to alternative ways to have a large volume with redundancy (4TB to 12TB potentially) that can be expanded upon without reformating.

Thanks and Very Best, :)

I've just updated my server motherboard with something a little newer and faster and I'm setting it up for extra redundancy and just wanted opinions of what people think is best and why.

My server is a P4 3.6Ghz, 3gb DDR2 600 and functions as a bunch of things, amongst which will be a file server. For the file server side of things it has an Adaptec 3085 controller which I will be putting drives in Raid 6 for large capacity+redundancy. For the boot side of things (And where important data will be saved) I will be utilizing 2 x 750gb drives in Raid 1 as well as having daily backups. My question to people reading this is:

Do you think it would be best to use Windows Dynamic Disk or the built in Silicon Image Sil3114 for my Raid 1 and why?

The reason I ask is that the driver install phase can be tricky with some OSes and the order in which the drivers are installed can matter.

Any pointers? :)

So I currently have a drive on my computer with Windows XP 32 bit and a backup drive with important files on it. Now I just got a new hard drive and Windows 7 64 bit will be a comin'.

I'd LIKE (dunno if possible) to set up Windows 7 on my new hard drive when Win 7 gets here. Then try to reinstall programs on my new hard drive that has Windows 7 all while keeping the Windows XP drive ready to go just in case. There are some programs I'm not sure will transfer over and work on Windows 7.

So following a successful install of these programs will it be possible then to format the disk with XP on it and convert it and my disk with Win 7 to a Raid 0 format without losing my Win 7 install and files?

Basically I want to take 1 disk full of data and combine it with another disk that has no data into a RAID 0 setup. Can a RAID controller spread the data of 1 disk between two?

Thanks guys. Most searches on the net don't seem to be about this topic. :o

Hi, after staying in the background and enjoying the forums for quite a while, I have ran in to a problem which has prompted this first post. So hopefully, someone can help me.

I have an MSI K9A2 Platinum motherboard. Currently installed in one of its four PCI-E slots is a generic PCI-E graphics card. When I install an LSI MegaRAID SAS/SATA 9260-8i controller card in to one of the other PCI-E slots, the PC won't boot, it doesn't POST and the monitor stays blank.

I flashed the motherboard and RAID controller's BIOS, but still no joy. But then I remembered the trick of covering connectors 5&6 which people do on LSI (Dell-branded) controllers, and what d'ya know, it worked. Windows booted and all was well with the world.

But then I noticed the date was wrong in the BIOS, so I changed it. After the change, the PC wouldn't boot again. It would only boot after clearing the CMOS, but again, the BIOS date was wrong.

I would really appreciate some help/suggestions (or even a fix) because I really can't afford another motherboard :P

Many thanks in advance.

This whole MBR is really screwing me in the @$&.

HD Config:
Drive 0: 2x320GB 7200.10 (RAID0) - C:\ - Vista
Drive 1: 320GB WD AADS - E:\ Win 7
Drive 2&3: 2x1TB - Storage (no RAID)

Simplified story of events:
1) I decided I no longer wanted to use Vista, so I switched over to using Win7 24/7 and decided it would be a good idea to give my WD drive to my dad.
2) Imaged file contents (using Acronis) and copied all files to my C:\
3) Removed dual boot for vista and just made it default to Win7 drive (in BIOS-thus my WD AADS became Drive 0, and the RAID0 became Drive 1)
----Month goes by----
4) Applied image to RAID0, booted up just dandy setting the RAID0 to Drive 0 again
5) Removed Drive 1 - WD AAJS and gave it to Dad, he was very happy btw (lol)
6) Came back home from visiting the parents house and computer says "Can't find MBR," many choice words later, I still can't get this sucker to boot, so I just bite the bullet, fresh install Win7, reimage the drive, SAME DAM ISSUE!

I think the problem is that when I installed Win7, it glued the MBR to that drive (the drive I gave to my dad). I imaged it this way too. It booted up on the RAID0 when I had the other drive in my computer.... Now that I took it out, it won't boot with the image.

I'm so confused, I tried restoring the image with and without the MBR (after fresh install of Win7). I'm stumped, what should I do? Can I restore that image successfully? Did I confuse you guys?

As the title suggests, i'm having raid trouble. I've gone through the processes of selected the RAID option in BIOS, creating the array (with correct parameters), and booted up on my vista disk. I've gone through the windows install process, loading the RAID controller and device drivers, and the sata controller driver. Window's goes through the motions of installation, as far as the very first time i log in. After i log in, it immediately logs off and restarts. After restarting, and after POST and the RAID screen, i'm presented with a blank screen with a blinking underscore in the upper left corner.

I've tried going through BIOS to make sure it's booting off the drives, and not any other devices, and to still no avail. Alas, i need some help.

This is a repost from the windows forum, because i thought it was a vista related error.

I have successfully installed Vista on a Mirrored RAID 0 configuration and had no problems what so ever. Whenever i try to set up the desired Stripped configuration, i get hit with the notice 'a 9.xx OS driver is required for OS boot'. I don't get that notice when i go through mirrored.

Is my problem the raid drivers themselves? Do any drivers exist to support drives as large as two 1.5tb's in RAID 0? The combined usable volume of the drives is 2.72tb.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I am getting ready to install Windows 7 (system components in sig). Attempting to optimize my system, I am considering changing the system drive from being my WD 1TB Black, to a WD 500 Blue, so that I can partition half of the system drive to the OS, and the other 1/2 to storage that isn't written to or read from very often, to leave the system good and responsive.

To explain, I just ran some HDTune tests which seemed to indicate the speed on the 500 Blue was just about as fast as the 1TB Black. Going to reboot with the Ultimate Boot CD and see if that's really true, since I suspect intuitively that testing on an active system drive doesn't give accurate results. . . So this might all be moot.

I also have 2 drives in RAID1. The 1 TB Black uses the Gigabyte SATA2 controller; the 500 Blue and the two 500's in RAID1 use onboard AMD controller. Now, if I did want to employ the 500 Blue for the system, I'd like to attach it to Port #1 of the AMD, but the RAID1 disks are in Ports#1&2 right now.

Can I move them to Ports#2&3, without losing the array? Is this a bad idea, I mean, switching the system drive at all?

Thanks,
