I click "Close", but Internet explorer does not close and appears to run fine. I'm also getting this error message when Internet Explorer is not running at all, such as when im playing WoW, which really annoys me because it minimizes my WoW. I've scanned for viruses and tried lowering my firewall, but so far, no luck. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

I built a pc for my uncle who lives halfway across the country this summer. He's had no problems, but the cisco card that was having a few issues before is not connecting at all anymore and he wants to put another card in. He is more knowledgeable about computers than your average Joe but he is having some issues. Here is part of his message:
This is for a small city, they want security software that will let them control user access to web sites. So basically parental control. They have windows XP systems and want to be able to block by catagories. They would like it to work on single user systems as well as being scalable to a small network. They do not want a server side app.

Any help? they want something more sophisticated than net nanny. (catagory filtering)

I am having connectivity issues when i play Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 online. Understand that these 2 games have no dedicated server support from their respective developers which is pretty fuk up.

So what can i do to optimize gameplay [i.e. to reduce internet lag to the very minimum] given such situation. I am also looking at third party hardware such as the Killer Xeno Pro which reviews by end-users gamers like us said it is useless in reducing lags.

So, any modem recommendation?

I have a question..

A lot of people have configured Windows server's to resolve IP address between their public IP and their private IP pool. How would you say that a server implementation would be more efficient for the inside-local user group than, say, letting a cisco device resolve the NAT layer 3 translations?

Would you say that letting a physical device (such as cisco router) paired with an enabled DHCP server and configured firewall is more functional the a Win server running AC DC w/ DNS, DHCP, NAT?

The only benefits I can see for a Server to control NAT are:
1) Active Directory will speed up DNS server host name resolution.
2) Graphical, friendly customizable environment.
3) Behind the firewall device, and using less resources on the routing device..

What am I not seeing?

Visited a local Micro Center with a friend to help her pick out a laptop and set her up with the ESET thing to protect her computer. Of course, since I suggested it, it's not working as it should ;)

Windows 7 Home Prem x64

Here's the issue: the laptop refuses to connect to her wireless router. When she tries the troubleshoot/fix thing, it tells her that it has something to do with her firewall/proxy settings.

Every time I tried to enable her firewall, windows defender would bug me about her not being protected. Every time I enable the windows thing, ESET would tell me it wasn't working properly. What the deuce?!

Anyone have any experience with this to help me figure this out? Every other computer can connect to the router. Just trying to figure this thing out!

PLEASE NOTE:
She has threatened me with the "this is insane I shouldn't have this problem, im about to return it and just get a mac... at least I know it will just work" SERIOUSLY?! I almost slapped her... please help me so this doesn't happen :)

(At least now we know what the problem is, and know it can be fixed lol)

Hi OCN.

Anyway, I've been noticing a lot of problems with my router (Linksys WRT54GS) and connectivity, both wired and wireless.

First off, in wireless terms, nothing can connect to my router except for my USB wireless adapter, model WUSB600N. I can't connect my dad's laptop, my mom's iPhone, etc.

Wired has even more problems. Occasionally I will have to redial my DSL line, plug it back into the router, and reconnect everything. The computer connected closest to the router works fine, but the long cable running from my router to my room doesn't work.

These problems are recent. I'm wondering if it's possible for a router to have a virus or something, because I use DMZ for gaming and *T word*ing. I've always used WEP, switched to WPA2, started having some issues, then switched back to WEP, and it still has issues with my dad's laptop and my mom's iPhone. Help?

My ISP is Bellsouth and my line is DSL.

A few weeks ago I posted a threat titled "File Sharing Hell". In Vista Ultimate, no matter WHAT I did to share files from my Desktop to other PC's on the network, it never worked.

If I turned off password protected sharing, it still prompted other PC's to enter a password to network into my desktop. If i mapped a network drive, it just failed and wouldn't let them in at all.

Hoping that this issue would have been resolved with Win7, I just tried it. Guess what?

I have a laptop running Win7 next to me that is sharing media with the network, one PC is running XP, and another is running Vista. If i turn password protection on, it prompts them for a password. If i turn it off, it doesn't, and they can stream movies straight from my laptop.

On the same version of Win 7 on my desktop I turn off password protection and it STILL prompts the other PC's on the network for password, including my laptop.

After the same nightmare on Vista Ultimate and Win7, I am forced to believe that my desktop is full of so much fail that it refuses to cooperate with logic or reason.

Does anybody have an idea of what I should do?

I have two computers hooked up to a Netgear gigabit switch with cat5e cable. Both computers have gigabit NICs and have always worked well in the past. I usually see transfer rates ~60MB/s, so transferring files between the two is pretty snappy.

The one computer is my main gaming rig, with a RAID-O array that holds my OS and program/game installs and a 1TB WD Green drive that I have my media and other things backed up onto. The other, spare PC is usually the one that I do my downloads on and host an FTP server on. So I do a lot of transferring from the spare PC to my main rig.

I've noticed an odd thing recently. If I get on the spare/server PC and paste a file from it to my gaming rig, it goes at the reasonable 50-60MB/s. However, if I'm on my gaming rig and i browse to the spare/server PCs drive and copy and and paste a file to either of my local disks, the speeds are... less than satisfactory.

I click on details to see the transfer rate and at first it will spike up to anywhere between 60-120MB/s, and then it will pause for a while and then drop down to 12-16MB/s and will transfer at that slower rate. I check my bandwidth graph during these transfers and there are quick, high spikes with 3-5 seconds of pretty much flat-lining in between. Neither PC is using an abnormal amount of system resources or doing anything else during these times. Rebooting them does nothing to fix the problem, and as soon as i do things the opposite way (pasting from the other PC to mine) the speeds are fast and consistent again.

Can someone give me any ideas as to why this is happening? It's annoying to have to go to the other pc and paste from it instead of just doing all the browsing and copying on mine.

Thanks

Ya I love my thread title :)

(synopsis of wall of text near bottom).

OK so I currently have one of the worst wireless cards I've ever seen. I mean, it's ridiculous. They still have beta drivers for Vista out, they don't even HAVE x64 support, and the card in general just SUCKS. (Netgear WG311v3 if anyone is wondering; works quite nicely in Ubuntu with ndiswrapper though :)).

So I need a new card. And because I strongly dislike my router as well (D-Link VWR 11.4), I am gonna have to say I want a new router as well.
Although my modem is quite nice :thumb:

Let's start with the new card, shall we?
I'm looking to go for a PCI one. No USB please. I'd rather not have this little dongle sticking out the back of my computer that I rely on for Internet access. Thank you :)
Must support WPA2, of course.
Price range is anywhere from You pay me-Free-$50. I might be able to go a bit higher (yay Christmas).

And as for the router:
Either has lots of features out of the box, or can be flashed to DD-WRT, Tomato, etc. I'd really like to be able to check out DD-WRT for myself, and I'd love to get into all those different tweaks that are available with it.
Obviously I won't see a speed increase with JUST an N card, I need an N router too ;).
Not entirely sure on what else to look for here, suggestions welcome :)
Price range is about the same as the wireless card, although I might be able to get the router now and get the card for Christmas. So I might be able to dig up some more money soon enough to drop on a nice one.

General questions:
I'm looking at getting N stuff, because it's finally no longer draft! NewEgg is only carrying draft stuff, so I've looked around TigerDirect and found some stuff there. But I want to hear your guys' thoughts.
Does N improve signal strength/reception at all? I'm mildly far from my router (as in, too far to hook up an Ethernet cable, but close enough to get a decent connection). Lots of N cards have multiple antenna, so I can only assume it does. And how well does it fair with microwaves/interfering signals? The kitchen is right between me and my router.
Does it really matter very much if it has external or internal antenna? (Router).

tl;dr
What kind of wireless card + router do you think I should get, that support DD-WRT, wireless N (preferably not draft), and comes in at a nice price?

I made a new thread because I couldn't edit my old thread title and It was specific to XP. The solution I am about to provide has options for XP+.

Although only a specific few will find this useful, I did spend quite a while on several occasions trying to find out how to use my Belkin F5D7000 v3 on 64 bit, which had no drivers on the Belkin website except 32 bit. Well i'm using it right now and I'm on 64 bit Win7 Ultimate, thanks Belkin!

Considering this, I wanted to make a web-search friendly version to make it easy for people in the future to find and hopefully get sorted alot quicker than I did!

To get it running...

1. Before installing your OS 64 bit, make sure you download this and have it on a USB or something beforehand.

http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php

For the v3 version of this card at least, it uses Ralkintech components. Therefore this driver is compatible. Find the PCI/mPCI/CB (RT2500) in the list for your OS. Vista for Win7. Maybe more available in the future. It takes ages! But worth it.

2. Install OS and what not, and install the drivers. After an initial problem, I set compatibility to Vista, and ran as Admin. Although this might not be necessary.

3. Go to device manager. There should be some flagged uninstalled devices, one of which being your Network Adapter. Right click > Properties > Drivers > Update Drivers > Browse My Computer... > Let me pick... > Dbl click Show All Devices. Let that load. Browse to Ralinktech drivers. There's Inc and Corp, within one of these there is one with the RT2500 drivers in there for Wireless LAN card, or something very similar. Use this.

Voila!

Although if Belkin just added support for this driver themselves, it could be alot easier!

For other version you may be able to use other drivers in a similar way. Try and find the makers of the card. I think Broadcom also makes certain components for them in other versions.
