Ratio of Time Regarding to Stress Testing Apps

1st, I am a firm believer when it comes to the more stress testing apps your OC can handle, the more stable it is. As I'm currently typing this, I'v just went beyond 8hrs of Prime95 (small fft). I'm trying to decide if I should stop @ the 12th hour or proceed to 24hrs. I will then test with large fft and then blend (same amount of time like small fft).

I need some opinions or possible facts on how long should I stress test with OCCT Linpack. I was thinking about 6 to 8hrs or simply set it for infinity & see how far it will last. We can all understand that it stress test the cpu a little harder but I think not by much. Any comments regarding to how long should I use OCCT?

As for LinX, I'm thinking 100 passes would suffice. Anybody disagree? Should I go for 150 or even 200 passes?

Usually, I would do 3hrs of OCCT, 6hrs of Prime95 (for all 3 parts), and 30 passes of LinX. I though for the 1st time, I will go the distance to really feel comfortable enough to say this OC is really stable.

All advice & comments will greatly be appreciated :D

Hello Everyone,

The title says it all, I am a complete n00b to overclocking and need some guidance, I've been doing some cursory reading for awhile on the subject but with my current setup I can't figure out how to overclock anything whatsoever.

As my title says I'm running the following:

CPU=Core i7-975
Motherboard=Foxconn Bloodrage
Memory= Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Video Card= EVGA GeForce 280 GTX FTW EDITION

Now I know I'll probably just here how I wasted my money on such a hefty processor etc. but I don't have any issues with money so I always buy big. Perhaps once I learn how to overclock I can buy smaller and play with overclocking like the rest of you.

The situation for me currently is I'm running my machine totally at stock and with what I have I know I should be able to do some moderate overclocking but I just can't figure out how with this BIOS or with whatever else I'm suppose to be doing. I've googled a guide that talks all about overclocking the Core i7-920 on a Foxconn Motherboard but I can't even get my system to boot properly with the slightest modification to any speed on the CPU/FSB what have you. Just as a heads up I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate also.

When I first bought this motherboard I thought it was bad as I couldn't get my system to boot it turns out that my memory required some seriously voltage change to make it work, I have to have my memory voltage at 1.85v for the memory I have and the motherboard by default had that setting much lower.

So lets see, I've gone in and enabled Turbo Speed so I could tweak my FSB or CPU multiplier but no matter what I do the system just will boot say what my new CPU speed is then after that line it will shutoff/reboot again and say I had a OVERCLOCK fail and go to safe mode with stock speeds. I've just tweaking the CPU multiplier from x25 as it is at stock to x26 and just that change will make my system not boot. I've also raised the CPU vCore voltage a bit to compensate for my attemped overclock and that doesn't make any difference. My BIOS says my default vCore voltage is 0.95v which I thought was quite low but then I've never had any system stability issues with my PC at all besides figuring out that quirk about my memory.

I've made adjustments in the CPU Features menu disabling PPM and a few other things that the post about overclocking an i7-920 mentioned and raised my CPU voltage and MB IOH core voltage substantially for what I think but yet my system continues to not be able to overclock whatsoever. Also as a heads up I'm running the Freezone ELITE TEC chiller on my CPU so temperature should not be any kind of issue.

If anyone can please give me assistance or point me in the right direction to figuring out how I can overclock this beast I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

I noticed everest spiking above 2.9ghz from time to time but could never catch it doing it with cpuz open so I thought it was just everest being buggy. Happens to be this processor will bump to 11x from time to time when doing things that require a lot of reads-writes like installing adobe cs3. It would spike often enough I was able to get it validated. I'll give a link to the cpuz and a screenshot below. Is this normal or is it just because it's an engineering sample? Any ideas?

Hey, I've been planning on buying i7 stuff but googling around the xeon w3520 seems to be a good alternative (being it can be hard to find a 920 d0)
I haven't found a good source on what mobos the xeon is compatible with, but I need a mobo with 2x SLI support, and a extra pci-port at the bottom (for 2x gtx260 and a raid-card)

I was hoping on going 3.8-4ghz with a noctua NH-U12P aircooler.
Would this ram suffice? Corsair Dominator DHX+ DDR3 1600MHz 6GB (1.65v 8-8-8-24)?
other components are a Corsair HX850, 2x gtx260, antec p182, OCZ vertex ssd.

I'm trying to find a relatively cheap mobo/ram but that will be enough for that ~4ghz oc (no need in going higher for me)

Even under-clocked, at stock PRIME goes to 3C from the Max in under 90 seconds!

Did I miss something?

Is there another Stability testing program out there that doesn't need to run for hours and does establish a stable overclock?

I'd been into PC gaming in the past and have had no problems putting systems together doing some overclocking, etc but always like to stick to the budget/Bang for the buck end.

The bug has bit me again and I'm looking at building a new rig. I'm definitely interested in getting a dx11 card when something worthwhile becomes available for it. Part of me wants to just go with an I series Board and I series chip right away, while another just wants to put together a system with an E series core. Though the prices seems to be getting close, maybe costing me about just $100 or so more to go with the I core.

Guess I'm just looking for some thoughts. Will be doing gaming, maybe an MMO, I'll be looking for some "wow" graphics you can only get on apc, but not "pushing games to the limit"

Thanks,

I'm running a core-2 duo (E6420) on an ECS 945P-A v3.0 board. I don't seem to be able to set the multiplier. Is this locked due to the CPU or the motherboard, and is there a way to unlock it?

Or am I stuck with solely bumping FSB frequency alone? I currently have it running FSB at 218, and I can get it going much higher than that, stable (have had it to 225) with my cooling setup (40mm fan on NB, Scythe Shuriken 3 Heatpipe on CPU, 92mm and 80mm case fans -- all on a variable 4-port controller). But I know it can do better, if I could get the multiplier unlocked.

Is this the fault of the CPU, or board? And if the board, how do I unlock it?

Hello

This is my bundle (from Overclockers.co.uk)....

OVERCLOCKED Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66GHz @ 4.00GHz.
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 Motherboard.
Patriot Viper 6GB DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz DDR3
Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler

Hello

This is my bundle (from Overclockers.co.uk)....

OVERCLOCKED Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66GHz @ 4.00GHz.
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 Motherboard.
Patriot Viper 6GB DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz DDR3
Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler

Rest of the PC is nothing out of the ordinary, 2 writers, 2 SATA drives, a floppy, case fans etc and that's pretty much it.

I have no experience in OC'ing, but wanted to make the most of my new PC, so decided to purchase a pre-clocked bundle. Even since then it has been nothing but hassle.

PC blue screens after just a few mins or Prime95 / OCCT etc. At first I suspected it could be due to my PSU (Nesteq NA5201 520W) not being up to the job, so I purchased a Zalman ZM850-HP. PC still blue screened after just a few mins of stress.

Kept an eye on temps, all fine and within range.

I've sent this bundle back to the supplier twice. Each time the technician has assured me that its running stable at 4.0GHz. He even reckons the CPU was changed just in case. However, each time it comes back and blue screens for me after just a few mins at 4.0GHz. 3.8GHz is fine.

Driving me nuts. Tester also seems stumped at this point and so has asked me to return the bundle again. However I really don't think I can put up with more downtime, just for him to claim its stable, only to come back to me and blue screen again.

I have since changed my PSU to the Corsair HX 850. My bundle is now (apart from graphics card and hard drive) idential to that of the technicians, plus my temps are lower than his and yet it STILL blue screens.

Here's my bios settings, but please remember, these are the exact same settings that the tester has this system stable at and also what they use for all there pre clocked I7 bundles (give or take a tweak here & there), based on him telling the truth of course.

Hope screen shots at ok....

http://www.mediafire.com/i/?hznmo2ozat0
http://www.mediafire.com/i/?xgiom3zmzoj
http://www.mediafire.com/i/?jyalnyxyyzb

These are the latest settings, but there are two other profiles (no turbo, but BCLK 200 for example) which he claims have also been tested successfully, but failed for me

How on earth can this be possible? How can this be stable for the technician and not for me? I am using the same bios profile so what could possibly be the problem?

Help please?!

P.S. Another thing I just remembered is once he asked me to try and lower the memory multiplier down to 6.0, however the system won't even post at 6.0, which is strange right? Memory past memtest86+ at 4.0Ghz fine.

idk what to doooooo.... OC or undervolt....

I know this is OCn but in reality here, going past 4.3 Ghz has shown minimal gains, but there are still gains to be had.

Diminishing returns?

First 5hrs with cpu. Quickie tests done and I must say these W3570 3847A696 are overclocking beasts! To be able to get screenshots and validation @4911-4966Mhz HT enabled with 1.45v bios (1.440v idle) vcore is crazy!

Temp and vcore at 4ghz (1.184v) wise, it's pretty similar to my W3520 3845A935. It's definitely cooler than my hotter W3540 3845B010 but not as cool as my i7 920 3845B260 (coolest cpu I've got).

I'm having a weird problem - I was able to overclock my E3300 to 3.42Ghz on stock cooling (42C @ idle) with the clock at 297x11.5. A week later, the machine can't go above 200. I checked the BIOS (gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l) and it shows 297, but when I boot into Windows and run CPU-Z, it shows only 200.

I double checked every setting, using all the previous settings that worked. (eg. PCI @ 100, memory @ 800 (SPD)
I've turned off AHCI, restored the BIOS to fail safe defaults, reinstalled the OS, but still no go. I am tempted to re-install my E2160 just to check.
Anybody have any ideas? Do I have a defective motherboard?
