I ordered my computer from NCIX yesterday and this morning received notification that it was billed to my credit card, i assumed this meant that i would be getting one of the 5970's they received yesterday.

Turns out that no, they billed me for the entire thing but do not have any more XFX 5970's to sell.

I ordered the computer before Xmas because i am off for 2 1/2 weeks and wanted to break it in during the holidays, will be working a lot of overtime after xmas and possibly even starting a new job in January.

I figure if they get the card in the next two weeks they can assemble it and ship it before the 18th the day i start my vacation.

What are my chances? Any of you have "inside info"?

This sucks =x

As you are aware, the HAF 932 uses toolless parts (great idea) but when I installed the MSI 5770 and tried to close of the clip on the IO plate to secure the card, the top clip will not close, as the edge hits against the side (cooler) of the MSI card.

It's not a real issue, as a screw works also so not like you can't install it.

Just thought i'd post my findings, just incase anyone else is thinking of getting a MSI 5770 with a HAF 932.

Like I say, it ain't a real problem, but annoying slightly .. I had to find a screw and a driver!! ..

The bottom fits nice and snug without any issues.

Okay so here's the deal.
I recently bought a 4870x2 from ebay, which the previous seller was listing as faulty, as he didn't get it to work (it didn't boot for him because he wasn't using a 6 and 8 pin cables, only two 6 pin it turns out).
The history of the card (apparently) is it had a previous owner to the one I bought it from, and it had been watercooled by an EK block, and then that taken off and the old stock cooler refitted.

When I received it I plugged it in etc, and it booted, but with major artifacts throughout boot (even in the BIOS...uh-oh..).

The issue is that I am away now for a month, so can't actually try fixes, but want to get an idea of what to try for when I get back.

It was supplied to me with the backplate taken off, the screws being lost, so I don't have a way to reattach this yet. Could the RAM chips on the back be overheating? I wouldn't have thought so from a cold boot? maybe only later when gaming or whatever..?

The person I bought it from said he tried applying new thermal paste to the GPU chip. I am wondering if he put too much/too little on it, as if he didn't realise he needed both 8 and 6 pin cables for it I'm not sure I trust his skill at refitting the cooler etc...

I uninstalled my old GPU drivers before putting the new one in, I *think* they were fully removed, but I doubt this makes a difference in the BIOS anyway as they won't be loaded...

The current plan of action is to try reapplying thermal paste, and see if that's the issue, but I haven't experienced this before so don't know how likely it is to work...

Can anyone give any other tips as to what might get it working..? Or what it's likely to be causing the issue..?

Thanks all! :D

Sapphire Radeon HD 5970 OC Review
Little Boy and Fat Man, the two bombs that changed the world as we know it. First Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima and then Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki to end World War II. You have to ask, what does a World War II lesson have to do with video cards? ATI dropped the first bomb with the release of the HD 5870 with clearly superior results over the previous generation ATI products and a commanding performance
lead over the current top of the line nVidia single GPU video card, the GTX 285. Now Fat Man has taken flight with the release of the HD 5970. Clear in its sights is the top of the performance ladder for nVidia, the GTX 295. Each of us remembers the introduction of ATI's dual GPU behemoths, the HD 3870x2, HD 3870x2 and the HD 4870x2 and the performance they brought to the table. The 3870x2 gave ATI some high end punch followed up later in the year by the HD 4870x2 to increase the level of performance before the launch of nVidia's GTX 295. From that point the green camp has been wearing the performance crown in the single video card battle. Things look to be a changing! ATI has chosen to go a different route with the naming of this card because it really is not a dual 5870 or 5850 but a combination of both. How is that? It has the hardware from the 5870 doubled up but runs with the clock speeds of the HD 5850 to keep the power consumption and thermals in check even though the heatsink can handle a total of 400 watts. Much like the rest of the HD 5XXX family, the HD 5970 supports DirectX 11, Open CL and ATI's Eyefinity multi-display technology for an added level of immersion.[/QUOTE]

I have been reading a lot and it seems the 4890 beats the GTX 260 and some show it even being near a GTX 285 or beating it. I really don't know much about ATI cards, but I used to have a GTX 260 and a GTX 280 and both were awesome.

I have a 4870 right now but I sold it and will be shipping it off shortly so I'd like to see if this is a good card to get or not?

I really don't know anything about the HIS brand, but I would like something that has some good overclocking results.

What do you think about the card linked above? It's the cheapest 4890 that I can find, unless someone on here can point me to one that is good and cheaper?

Thanks!

To all the people with the "why waste your money" comments.

I don't care about the money... I work my butt off to buy what I want to buy when I want to buy it. You do what you want to do with your money and leave mine alone.

The 4890's go for 180-210. Also is it a noticeable difference between the 5770 and 5750, seeing that is only 10-20 difference?

I cant find a clear cut view on which one is the better buy; comparing price, performance, and longevity.

It will be run on a i7 920 with a bloodrage mobo. also getting the cosair 750 b/c the price seems very good right now.

Thanks!

UP ^^ There you can see the second slot has visibly less lanes than the first.. It says in the manual under internal I/O: PCI Express x16 and PCI Express x4 slot, both hybrid crossfireX ready and both pcie 2.0 compliant.

Heres another photo of something unrelated. But still on the motherboard none the less.
Tests were conducted on my sig rig @ 3.625GHz X4 unlocked. 4890 OC'd to 950/1050 and on 9.11s.
Saved results also attached.
edit: BTW I do know that 8xQ, 16x and 16xQ should technically not work on my single ATI 4890. So, that I can somewhat account for. As to why standard 8x does not seem to work properly, I do not know...

This just started a few days ago, I was doing something, and all of the sudden my screen goes black with the temp warning LED on my second 4850 lit up, I rebooted, then started checking out the temps for it to see what it was doing. For whatever reason now its idling at like 45-50c and under load will be 80c or higher if I let it go, while the first card idles at 30-35c and tops out at around 70-75c under load. I've already tried replacing the TIM several times, using AS5 and still no improvements. One thing I did notice is that the heatsink for that card is cooler than the top card, which has normal temps, which would make it seem like a problem with the heat not transfering to the cooler, but I dont see how there could be any problems, its tight on the card, has the right amount of TIM, and anything else I could think of. I've even thought to try swapping the two coolers and see if it changes at all, but I'm almost out of AS5 and dont want to buy more just yet. Any ideas on why it would be doing this? As I'm sitting here I just thought, would AS5 on what I would assume to be resistors around the die cause cause a higher voltage or something?

And in case you're wondering, yes I'm sure the probes are on the correct heatsinks.

On the left is the card with the 'normal' temps, with a hotter heatsink, and on the right is the second card with the higher temps, with a cooler heatsink.

Heatsink temps were monitored like this.
