Default How To: Get MP3 and DiVx Video support in Open Suse or SLED 10

Some parts of this guide can get a bit complicated so if your not sure what you are doing or something unexpected happens dont continue and ask here for help.

Open Yast2 and then uninstall XINE-LIB and whatever player you want to use - Usuarly Totem or Kaffeine (SUSE Ships with a cut down versions)

Download Speex RPM
Download Win32Codecs
Download New XineLIB
Download Xine UI Player (only if you want to use this to play your mp3's or divx files)
Download Kaffeine (To use this as your player for KDE this is normaly used)
Download Totem (This is the default for Gnome Desktop)
Download LAME (For mp3 Support)

Right now we did the boring bit lets get it to work. There are two ways in which you can do the next section so I'll start with the easiest.

#1
Open a file manager on your desktop and navigate to where you save the rpms. When you get there double click to install them one at a time. Install them in this order.
Win32Codecs

Speex (If you get Dependency conflicts here it is because you already have another copy of speex. In this case dont bother installing this one - Suse calls its copy of speex something different so it gets confused just click ignore)

Lame

XineLib1 (These are the new xine libs)

Now install your selected player rpm. This could be Kaffeine, Totem or Xine-ui
After this you may want to reboot but after that it should work.

Method #2
Use the console to navigate to where you rpms are and then use the command rpm -i to install the rpms. You could try typing rpm -i *.* to install them all at the same time or you should do it individualy in the order above.

Have fun....

if you type rpm -i RPMNAME.rpm at console it will install the rpm without yast. This can help you if you are getting unknown errors. if you type rpm -i *.* it will install all teh rpms in the current directory but this doesnet always work
