Default Info: Some things you should know about Crucial Ballistix.

Ok, as of now, this only applies to Crucial Ballistix PC3200 512mb sticks...but I'll hopefully be able to gather some more information on other sets.

Well as some of you know I posted various threads on how my Ballistix(2x512mb sticks) didn't seem to want to overclock much at all, despite how reviews hit some really tight timings at ddr500, I'm talking 2.5-2-2-6 speeds...with 2.7 or 2.8v on them!

The thing is, mine would not overclock because they used a different chip than the ones that were reviewed. The Ballistix 512mb sticks became famous due to the Micron -5B-G chip. However...with me this wasn't the case. I got the Micron -5B-D chip. These things do nothing compared to what their couterparts, the -5B-G's did. I can't get mine to ddr500 unless I loosen the timings up to 3-3-3-6 -- It's the only way.

So, what I'm getting at here is before you buy a set, or if your wondering the same thing like I had been for a while...is how to tell if you have the D chips or the G chips.

To tell, its very easy. All you have to do is look on your antistatic bag that came with the sticks, or even on the heatspreader itself, and you'll see a 13 digit number, that starts with a BL, and ends with either a .8TD, or a .16TG

If you have the .16TG, you are a lucky guy, you have the revered Micron -5B-G chips on your ram.

If you have the .8TD like I have....then sadly you've ended up with the D chips.

Well, like I said as I find out more info, I'll update this info with more and more stuff on this ram. I hope I help any of you guys planning on buying some of this ram...its not bad by any means, just you'll want to aim for the G chips instead of the D ones, because you'll get a little bit more juice out of them.

Thanks for looking,
