So, you've just installed your fancy new linux distro, but you dont like the skin. Well, let me tell you this! It's not as hard as windows to install skins into Gnome, KDE, XFCE or any other desktop environment\window manager you can think of.
__________________To start off with, we need to make sure you have the latest version of Gnome. If your distro is modern (ie: within the past year) then chances are you have the latest Gnome, but to be sure, update your distro. Now, you need to find a theme. My favourite site (and probably the most popular) for my themes is gnome-look.org. They have everything from Splash screens to cursors but for now, where concentrating on your theme. Once you have your self a GTK 2.x theme picked out, download it to your desktop or any other easily findable location. Once its downloaded you do not need to extract it. To install it follow this menu path: System > Preferences > Theme > Install Theme Now find the tar.gz file containing the theme you like and click install. Voila! Gnome should change your theme. You can change some of the settings, such as the icons, by going to Theme Details. Enjoy your new theme!
