The LCD beats the EV700 is every way I can think of (although the gateway has a slightly cooler control panel). Compaired to a new LCD, the colors on the CRT are horrible, and I can't even see some of the colors on it. The CRT is also very dark, even at the brightest settings. I think that some LCDs do suck, but the higher end models now proform better than CRTs. I see really no reason to justify buying a new CRT.
LOL That is way too wrong.
The colors on a CRT are WAY better than ANY LCD.
Also, you shouldn't compare a generic CRT to anything. My Samsung 750S pwns any LCD I've touched, except that it doesn't have a "native" resolution of 1600x1200.

I don't understand why people say that LCDs have better colour than CRTs.
See the pros, they use CRTs because:
  • Better colour
  • Faster updaterate
  • Cheaper (Which means for the price of a decent LCD, you can get a pretty much kickass CRT)
Though there is some exceptions, with LCDs there are:
  • Lower power consumption
  • Often cooler (Pun, haha)
But actually, suit yourself, I'd just prefer a CRT over LCD most of times.

"better colour" (colors)
not if u get a fine LCD

5ms is NOTHING... really u CANT TELL TEH DIFFERENCE

"cheaper"
only upfront, LCD saves you in the long run

1. Kind of agree, although the pros will know the difference more than I can

2. Agreed. Although high end CRT refresh faster, I can't see a difference (my CRT is at 85hz)

3. Disagree. You won't save that much money.

edit: oops on some stats

Apparently some of you havnt gamed on some of the nicer quality LCD's
Yes expensive if you want one 20" and bigger
I game on a 24" Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP Widescreen LCD and let me tell you, there is no comparison on any CRT, yet the price of $600+ is a big chunk but its something i wont have to upgrade for quit a while and the colors are more brilliant than anything ive seen thus far and im an extremely avid gamer, just my 2 cents!

Anyhow nice faq other than the comment about the CRT & LCD's

FINALY to end the crt vs lcd...
http://ergo.human.cornell.edu/Pub/LC...money%20crt%22
(page 3 has a nice chart)
only pro of crt is the "cost" and color range
everything else is LCD
http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/cost.html
with the average cost of kwh is about $.10 (for me its $.15)
LCD CRT power usage (15"LCD) (17"CRT, ONLY 15" VIEWABLE)
25W 80W Active
3W 5W Standby
rounding to 50W difference for easyer math
50W = .05 kWh
365 days = 18.25 kWh difference YR
X $.10 = $1.83 yr 1 HOUR A DAY
for me its about $2.74 yr 1 HOUR A DAY

EDIT: MATH ERROR
take $1.83 (or $2.74 in NY) and times by hours of average use a day

so it turns out im wrong about cost (reasonable time payback) and color range, but does Visual performance, Image flicker, Image brightness, Image geometry, Image sharpness, Screen viewing area, Screen size, Specular screen glare, Electromagnetic emissions, Heat emissions, Space efficiency, not out weight what crt has to offer. I say LCD!

Nicely done! I just never truly experienced LCDs myself, so I can't say. The cost factor, however, is worth it IMO.

I doubt the average usage for the montior of the average user here on OCN is 4 or under hours per day.

OMG i messed up my math!!!!!!!!!!
18.25 kWh yr is for 1hour a day!!

u have to times 18.25 by the number of hours used a day then times your states average cost for power (.10 is us average, NY is .15)
so the NEW difference is
(USA) (NY)
$7.30 yr more for crt (4 hours of use a day) $10.95 yr
$10.95 yr (6 hours) $16.43 yr
$14.60 yr (8 hours) $21.90 yr

P.S. this is all rounding down 5 watts btw so difference is more
sry about the math mix up
