Default Info: Why is my CPU running slower than it's supposed to?

Both AMD and Intel CPU's have the ability to throttle back when not under load. AMD calls in "Cool n Quiet" and Intel calls it "EIST" or Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Tech, usually just called SpeedStep.

This usually works by decreasing the multiplier (a Prescott 3.4GHz decreases the multiplier from 17 to 14, but keeps the FSB at 200). For those who are new, FSB * multiplier = clock speed (and there are better FAQs about that).

There is usually an option in the BIOS to disable this on motherboards unless it is from an OEM (Dell, etc.). You may want to disable this if it throttles back even when you fold (for 37726, of course) or during certain games.

My personal preference is to always have it off. It totally messes up an OC.

Most people here would agree with that. Turn it off :)

Good Information though.

Meh, I would prefer it on for Intel, but off for AMD. AMD also turns down voltage, which Intel doesn't, and turning down the voltage can be a no-no.
