Default How to: Power CCFL's using a wall outlet...

Well, here is a pic of my desk..

And yes, this was sponsored by the big can next to my desk..Love that stuff!

As you can see, the keyboard that sits on the top part of the desk, would be quite hard to read, when gaming and surfing the web with all my lights turned off. Well, I kept getting killed when I couldn't find the right key to hit, so I had a 6" Meteor light laying around, and thought..How the heck can I use this...So, here's how I did it.

1) I found a wall transformer that was used to power an old router. It was rated at 500mA. And it lights it up bright, no probs. If you were going to be using more lights, then I'd say step up to the 1000mA one, or so. (I'm just guessing here, LOL).

2) Cut the end of the Transformer off (the plug that you connect to device), and leave pretty much the entire length of cord. Split the two wires down the center about 5" from the cut end.

3) Remove the insulation from the wires (only about .75"-1"). Now, you need a Molex connector. Once you get the Molex connector, you'll need to use the Female end of the Molex...So, cut the wires, and remove some insulation off of the Yellow wire, and the Black wire right next to the yellow wire only.

4) Look at your transformer, there should be one completely black wire (Negative wire), and one wire with a gray line, or writing on it, (Positive Wire).

5) Connect the Black wire from the Transformer (Negative), to the Black wire on the Molex connector next to the Yellow wire (See Pic). Cover with electrical tape.

6) Connect the Wire from the Transformer that has a line or writing on it, to your Yellow Wire on the Molex connector (See Pic). Cover with electrical tape.

7) Plug in your Light to the Molex, then plug into the wall. Viola!!!

You can see the switch, it's the green button behind the bottom speaker on the left (next the the rear desk leg).

With the lights off :

Thanks for reading, and happy Modding!!!

I have a switch hooked into mine, so that I can shut it off and on, which came with the Meteor Light I'm using.

You can also use a old PSU to do it. Details in my signature, and are stickied in the case mod section.

Good find.

But, I thought to myself, why use a PSU and take up that much space..know what I'm saying? I know I could have done that, but then I would have had to figure out where to mount a PSU...This way, I just had to run a wire up the desk leg...Much cleaner, and less wires hanging around.=)

So, since I figured out how to do it, I figured others might want to know..=)

thanks by the way y'all!!!

Thanks for the Rep Spooked!!

Anyone ever tried this yet? Works very well, if you don't have a backlit keyboard...Mount it above the keyboard, and viola, you can see!! :D
