Default How to: Skip commercials in Media Center

Here’s how to setup commercial stripping on your Media Center PC:

1. Download DVRMSToolbox from The Green Button Community: http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/thread/99008.aspx
2. Install and follow the installation on-screen instructions
3. Click the check-box on Modify file permissions
4. Select Optional Components: ShowAnalyzer looks for commercials, DVRMSFileWatcher automates the removal of commercials in new video files and Commercial Skip Add-in adds a 30 second skip to Media Center edition
5. Change your install path, only if necessary and choose “Just Me” Instead of Everyone – Many users need this to set the permissions correctly for automated commercial removal. I know, it sounds backwards to me too.
6. Enter your Media temporary directory on a big drive and click Save below. This directory should be a new one on a large and fast hard drive. Files will be deleted from this directory, so make it unique!
7. Proceed with the other helper program installations, but don’t launch them. Their settings are stictly for the pros or those who have major problems.
8. Save the global profile??
9. Restart your system. I know, I hate this too.

Dropping the Commercials from a Single file:
1. Launch DVRMSToolBoxGUI and copy and paste in the input path and file – don’t forget the extension of .dvr-ms for Media Center
2. Name the output file and directory – again, you’ll need .dvr-ms for the extension. I chose the My Documents\My Videos directory so that the file automatically shows up in “My Videos” under Media Center
3. Select “Cut commercials out of a DVR-MS file and output DVR-MS”
4. Click on the Process Directory tab
5. Name your Processing Directory as a temporary directory on a fast hard drive large enough to hold the full show content. This can be your media drive.
6. Name your Output Directory to be the folder that you want the commercial free media to reside. I, remember, chose “My Videos” so that it shows up in Media Center again. If you use Tweak MCE you can change this and re-aim the folder that MCE looks into
7. Select the Process Priority as High if you want it to convert quickly, otherwise the default setting will make the magic happen in the background
8. Press the Run button.
9. Your computer will then spend about 40 minutes for an hour worth of programming looking at each video frame and removing the commercials from the program. At the end of the run you will find your new filename and program in your requested directory. If you followed my lead, Media Center will already have a copy ready for you to watch!
