Default Info: What is BTX?

Browsing around the forums, I have noticed few people really understand what the BTX form factor is. Many believe that it is just a case with an upside down motherboard tray, putting the CPU on the bottom (usually along with the PSU) and the video cards and PCI cards at the top, facing "up".

Let me start out with a quote from pcstats.com,
Quote:
"Unlike many recent computing technologies such as PCI Express or DDR-2, BTX is not the product of a group of companies. Intel is the sole motivator behind this technology."
A picture from pcstats best shows the layout of the new form factor.

The new form factor BTX has the CPU in the front of the case, with a large air duct type heatsink and one 80mm fan. The air passes through this and then hits the northbridge and the vga card, or cards. Any air that does not flow through the back of the case will flow torwards the draw of the PSU fan, which sits over the ram slots.

As for temperatures, the BTX form factor will lower the cpu temp by 2-5 degrees celsius. While this is not a big drop in temperature, BTX allows for this drop in temp with less noise and fewer fans.

Intel in pushing for BTX mainly in business places to replace ATX. It is working and many big box manufacturers like Dell and HP have already shipped Intel's new form factor. At my school we got about 50 new HPs at the end of last year that are all BTX. They are 2.8GHZ P4, with HT. They are reasonably fast and very quiet.

With the release of Conroe, and CPUs that run cooler than Netburst architecture, BTX is likely to fade away in all markets except ones that Intel wants, like business areas where it can sell off all of it's P4s. ATX is here to stay for at least another few years. The small number of cases that mount the motherboard tray upside down may become the next "form factor", but remember, it's not BTX!

I've added a few articles if you would like to learn more, as well as some benchmarks.

Good Info. I saw some things about BTX just wasn't too sure of what it was.
