Default How to Create Video DVD's in Linux

Window has Nero Digital, and Linux has...well, not much really. Here's a guide on how to create a Video DVD that is playable on your DVD Player.

NOTE: This app is GTK\GLADE based, so make sure you have Gnome or the corrospoding librarys.

Step 1:

Get your Home Movie \ DVD Backup \ Whatever in a format that can be read by your system. Install Mplayer if you need to (it plays most things).

Step 2:

Theres an app called DeVeDe for linux thats VERY good. I have used it numerous times so far and must say it is has prooven it's self worthy. You can get it here. Install it by running the install.sh script in a terminal by typing:

sh install.sh

Step 3:

When its done you now open the app by going to the Video section in your menu (Applications > Sound & Video in Gnome). When the app opens, you may experience some dependancy problems. You can apt-get or yum these as they are called in the warning dialog. Try again. When the app does open It will ask you for which type of disc you wish to choose. I choose VideoDVD.

Step 4:

You can now import your different videos into the program by clicking add under the files list and then finding the file. It will also ask you for what bitrate you wish to have it at. Choose as close to the original file as possible. This saves alot of space on the disk as the program always has an enourmous bitrate by default.

Step 5:

Now that you have your videos added the list of what to add the the disc, make sure the option, "Create ISO or BIN\Cue File Ready to burn is selected". This makes things alot easier. Click Forward. It will now ask you where you want the ISO to be placed and what to call it. Tell it and click ok.

Step 6:

DeVeDe will proceed to convert the files. This may take a while. It look 2.5 hours for my lappy (1.6 Dothan, 256mb of RAM, Ubuntu Dapper) to convert a 699mb DivX film. On the other hand, my rig (3200@2.7, 1GB of RAM, Fedora) did 28 episodes of Full Metal Panic! in around 2 hours. This is heavily RAM and CPU based. Once it has completed the task of converting and creating the ISO you can burn it in linux or in Windows.

Step 7:

Burn the ISO to disc using your chosen method.

Step 8:

Enjoy.

NOTE: Pictures and more details coming soon.

I'm not too sure. When I burned the FMP onto DVD it played on my lappy and on my cheapo dvd player. As for the messed up AV, you didn't have the right codecs. If you install GStreamer with all of the optional codecs then you'll find it should convert properly.
