But, you might want to add this: Cut off one side of the shroud if you are using two of them side-by-side. Place the shrouds together and you have a large open cross-section in the middle. This will all the air to combine between both fans completely eliminating the deadspace where the fans come together.

Yeah, it's a good idea, but hardly original. It works best with 38mm thick fans, but as said, they're often more expensive than purpose-built shrouds. Tupperware is another option people go for and although it's not as easy, it's probably cheaper.
I like your idea to cut the fans when they are in parallel so they allow more airflow. That's good thinking, I hadn't considered that, nice idea! :) REP for you!
