Default How to: See The "Security" Tab In My Windows XP Machine?

If you own an XP Pro machine, the Security tab can be viewed very easily. Just open any folder and select Tools > Folder Options... > Select the View tab. On the very bottom is a check box labeled "Use Simple File Sharing." Uncheck this box and reload Windows.

Windows XP Home is a little more locked down. Simple File Sharing is forced by default and can not be changed. To view the Security tab, you can either boot into safe mode and log in as the Administrator, or you can install the Security Configuration Manager. to do this, use the following:

First you must download the Security Configuration Manager from Microsoft. This can be found using ftp here.

Download the x86 (Intel) version of the Security Configuration Manager and save it to your hard disk. Double click the SCESP4I.EXE file you downloaded and extract the contents to a temporary location on your hard disk. Then open the folder you extracted the files to and locate the Setup.inf (Setup Information) file. Right click Setup.inf and select Install. After the installation is finished, reboot your computer.

***CAUTION*** Adjusting the permissions on a drive, file or folder can lock even the Administrator account out of that drive/file/folder. Deny Permissions take precedence over Allow Permissions, regardless of your group membership. Uncheck Allow, rather than using Deny.
