You will need the following:

Now, this is based on a clean install. If you are already running Windows XP but you want to reformat, this also works; Just make sure to backup your files before you continue. If your Windows XP disc is a bootable disc, then first put it in your CDROM drive. Restart, and press DEL (the key varies, but it tells you which one to press during boot) so you enter the BIOS setup. Make sure the CDROM drive runs first on top of everything else. Save the changes, and hopefully you'll see a blue screen regarding your Windows XP installation. If your Windows XP disc is not a bootable disc, you will need about 6 floppy disks to boot it for you. Go here and download the files for Windows XP. Restart into the BIOS setup, and make sure that the floppy drive boots on top of everything else (if it's not, change it so it is first). Put Boot Disk 1 into your floppy drive, save your BIOS settings, restart, and hopefully it'll boot to a blue screen regarding your Windows XP installation. After you put all 6 disks in, it'll ask for your Windows XP disc, and then you can start installing. When you see the menu saying "Welcome to Setup" in bold, press 'Enter' to set up Windows XP. Read the End-User Agreement, then press F8 to continue. Now, you will see all your partitions on your hard drives. If your hard drive is new, you'll only see "Unpartitioned Space." Now, to make things simple, make a partition using all the space and format it using NTFS. If you see other partitions on your hard drive, you should delete it and make a new partition, then format it using NTFS. For the rest of the setup, you can just leave it alone for about 15 minutes, when it will eventually ask you for your CDKey along with your time settings and computer name. Wait another 30 minutes, and Windows XP should be completely installed. Congratulations!

if your system has a bootable cd-rom option then you do not need to put the drive top in boot priority. you just press any key when prompted to when booting up.
