What about pushing the CPU into a block of styrofoam to protect its pins? Anything wrong with that? I'm thinking the styrofoam would protect the pins well, and give something easy to grab onto.

styrofoam should work fine as long as you don't have to push too hard to get it to stick on the pins
and why would you chrome plate it in the first place? that would add another layer on top of the copper, hindering heat transfer... which is what we're trying to eliminate

hey nice job
__________________i used to work in a machine shop an lapped alot of valves etc we started off with a speacial lapping block and with lapping paste then your sandpaper technique but with 1000grade but after that to get it even smoother use brasso on the glass dont belt sand a cpu if u dont want it to get hot cause it will get so hot the metal will turn blue and it will change the molocules of the metal an it wont be flat there's no way u can put it down on the sander flat' one side will hit first i once lapped the face off a coin in this method wast planning to do two coins and locktite together to make double sided tails
