If you are cautious and have a heatsink that can be adjusted then you can cut the IHS off and go direct die. My work computer is this way and it runs really cool. just take a razor and slowly cut into the glue holding it on go around the chip once and it should come off. The glue is only about 2mm deep so dont cut too deep.

WARNING: you can only remove the IHS on AMD 64/X2/FX/Opteron processors! on all intel s478/LGA775 processors, the IHS is soldered to the core, and trying to remove the IHS is almost guaranteed to crack/fracture/damage the core in one way or another - do not try removing the IHS on an Intel processor, you will be signing the death certificate for your processor

that is not true... on some older models of the socket 478s you can do this (IHS not soldered to the core). these are assembled pretty much like A64s, and i saw this done in a computer magazine, and actually did this myself.

but just to be safe... don't do it

Already did this with a northwood and a prescott. I have not tried this on a lga775 chip yet. Is it soldered to the actual die of the chip or just the green around the die? I think you could still get through the soft solder with a sharp razor. If you try and you cant seem to budge the adhesive dont bother. Cutting through the glue should be as easy as cutting through a crayon with a razor.

its soldered to the actual core of the processor

with old northwoods and williamettes, its as easy as an A64, but others its soldered to the core, and the bond may be weak enough to remove it without cracking

but on LGA775 chips, its nearly impossible to get it off

Maybe somebody already answered this but, Why is the copper ihs plated with zinc if its better to sand it off. Why would they even put the zinc on there in the first place?
