Default How to: Silence My Fans Without Undervolting?

The answer is simple, i was very mad at my computers noise the other day, and also sick of the dust. So, i put some thought, and I found a box of Surgical Masks. The answer was quite simple to both noise and dust. Because Less airflow dosent allow the fan to spin as fast, it also means less noise, and less dust.

Materials

5-10 Surgical Masks (Paper Type, not the ones with shape, also more or less depending on the amount of air you want to restrict.)

Tape of Your Choice (I prefer Masking Tape as it is easy to remove)

Instructions:

Take the surgical masks and cut them to the size of your fan, you can use more layers to restrict more air, and reduce noise.

Place Tape around the edges of the mask, and then apply the mask to cover the fan.

End Result is on the attachment.

I have found that this works best on intake fans, blowing fans wont make any difference as more force is applied in the blow area.

Hope this helps as an easy dust/noise mod.

i want quiet, but great cooling, it don't really come that way, at least not cheap :( so i guess silent 120mm fans are the fay for me, and a zalman heatsink for AMD :)

if they made 160mm fans, that would be perfect (i have 4 80mm fans in a square formation, making 160x160), but this would work instead i guess :)

5-10 masks you say there? How many fans were you covering?
