HT doesn't stop it from using all the CPU.

It only looks that way. When you play games with HT enabled it looks like only half the CPU is being used, but its not true. Disabled or enabled the performance gain is negligble.

HT does stop programs from using half of the CPU - It's what it was designed for, and if it "Only looks that way", how are you telling otherwise? HT does slow folding down.

I saw this anwer on another forum basically u have to turn the priority of the client to below normal or lower (taskmanager >> proceses >> right click the process) as both process are @ the same priority are are vying for the processors attention..
Another fix is to install F@H as a Service (PM me for a link to a guide)
Actually, its an openGL conflict. Only one program can utilize it at once, and the F@H graphical client does.

No. HT makes 2 logical CPUs. F@H Uses 100% of one of the two logical CPUs.

Basically, you can do:
Number of Clients running * 100% / Number of CPUs = Overall CPU Usage

So 1 Client * 100% / 2 CPUs = 50% Overall Usage

ONLY if you install in different directories. Also, DO NOT just copy the files from one directory to each other. This will cause our server to get confused, and 1) you won't get credit for the work you do, and 2) it will be no use for science. Instead, run the install program twice into each directory. If you have already copied the program into multiple directories and are trying to run it, find the client.cfg file and delete the "userid=xxxxxxxx" line. Next time it connects to F@H, it should reset the client.cfg file, and all should be well."

So you rated the FAQ down, thanks :p
Sorry about that Stainless--it is a good FAQ--maybe I just don't get it--but I have installed FAH in two different directories and still no results--and this with my dual core. I am not sure exactly how the flags work on the shortcut and I am going to try and figure it out right now. Hey at least I bothered to read it!

From what I could understand in the shortcut target I simply add -local -config -forceasm -advmethod and when I open the shorcut these features will somehow be enabled by the FAH program and my PC (if apllicable)--is that correct? Reps to you--sorry about not giving your FAQ the top rating it deserves....

Hi Stainless, great FAQ! I must correct you on one thing though and that is your interpretation of Intel HT and it stopping "programs from using half of the CPU".

I just ran one instance of SuperPI (1M) with HT on and again with HT off. The results are as follows:

--------------------------------------------------------
3GHz P4 Prescott @ 3.6GHz (HT ON) - 39.907 seconds.
3GHz P4 Prescott @ 3.6GHz (HT OFF) - 39.203 seconds.
--------------------------------------------------------

In Task Manager, with HT on, CPU usage was shown as 50% and with HT off, Task Manager displayed CPU usage as 100%.

The difference between HT on and HT off was only 1.76% in the favour of having HT off, not 50%. I think this definitively shows that using HT will not restrict any one program to only half of the CPU's processing capability, as if it did, the SuperPI results would look very different indeed.

I would strongly suspect that, if F@H were tested in the same way I have tested SuperPI, the results would be remarkably similar and would show that HT would have little or no real impact on the speed at which WUs are processed.

Highly-Annoyed
