Okay so say you have just reformatted and you go into itunes and you dont have anything in your library and it wants to over write what's on your ipod.

Lose all you music? NEVER!!

So to save it go download IpodRip.

Before you install it, its recommened to uninstall itunes, I didn't =].

Now run the program.

Save your music to a folder on your computer.

Now everything is backed up!

Just reinstall /start up itunes and load up the folder... good as new.

I hope I saved you many hours of obtaining lost music.

heh good faq, im going to be switching mobos so ive decided since i want no driver coinflicts, i shall reformat, but when you said

well wouldnt itunes NOT be there after reformatting lol, so really all you have to do is download that program and do all the other steps correct? rep for ya dont wanna lose my 3 gigs of music on my 20 gig heh.

To change MB or reformat HDD and recover iTunes - backup the iTunes DB and dir to CD/DVD - reinstall iTunes and restore DB - the iPod will not be cleared of any songs.

and as for the reformatting thing, I installed itunes, then i had to figure all this out
but No Itunes doesnt have to be installed first

Anapod by Redchair is awesome as well, it also adds a nice webserver to access your ipod files remotely.

Also, your ipod is recognized as a drive even without any software loaded (itunes or ipod drivers). You can just transfer the files directly- they are located in iPod_Control\Music then several subfolders. They will not be named correctly, but the ID tags are correct. I use a program called Tagscanner that will rename files based on the ID tags (including folder structures). That is free!

you can also look up something called "podutil" or ipod utility - no cost and you can use it forever!

otherwise, you could go to edit, preferences and tell itunes that you don't want the ipod to update so it looks like the library, that way you don't have spend serious amount of time, just to bypass it. (and i think that information will be saved on your ipod, so next time after a reformat, it will not empty your ipod, just so it looks like the library) :D

yeah you can just tell itunes to not update your ipod
then hook up the ipod
you dont need the ipod to install itunes
