Default How to: Improve mouse response/accuracy by changing the USB polling rate

Windows by default has the usb ports working at 125Hz of 1000Hz that USB is capable of, giving 8ms response times. You can change the frequency to 250Hz(4ms), 500Hz(2ms) and 1000Hz(1ms) to get better response times.

To do this,
1) Download this prog, boot to safe mode and set the polling rate to 1000Hz, reboot.

2) Run this prog to see at what rate your mouse works.

3) Reboot to safe mode again, and set the polling rate to whatever your refresh rate is.. ie. if you got 479Hz, set it to 500Hz, if you got 849Hz, set it to 1000Hz. However, you could leave it at 1000Hz, but the higher the polling rate, the higher the cpu usage will be.

Note that this MUST be done in safe mode, if not you will get negative results.

You should see a noticeable difference in mouse accuracy/response to movements; although it might take some time to get used to it as well, for the reason that we are used to this 8ms "lag"

The only thing it does is make your mouse respond a bit quicker, it doesn't have anything to do with dpi, mouse acceleration, etc... if you don't like it, just restore the original usbport.sys file with the same program.

Im wondering if i should try this for another reason... This isnt just a tweak for you mouse, its a tweak for EVERYTHING USB. And it just so happens that my Belkin wireless internet adapter is USB. Would i get better network speed if i had a higher USB polling rate? Either way im not gonna mess with it because:

#1 knowing my luck it would make everything blow up
#2 Everything works just fine as it is
#3 I dont use all of my networks speed anyway.

I have a USB Lemel mouse. The problem is that everytime i slightly touch the left button, the mouse clicks 2 or 3 times at once, opening many windows or closing too many windows. Will this prog. help?

Well... no. Basically the only thing that this does is that it increases how often Windows will ask for any changes from the device, giving better response and accuracy from mouse movements.

I learned from someone that certain games can only take up to a certain # for USB buffer... I don't know all the names of the stuff, but here's my example: Doom3 can accept 16# (i don't know what to call the units; i'll just use #). The equation is USB Polling rate / FPS = #. You got your keyboard, mouse and mouse buttons, so basically it's USB Polling rate / FPS = 3 x #. So since Doom3 can't accept more than 16#s, 3 x # must be < 16. So if your polling rate is too high and you can't get enough FPS to balance it, you'll lose responsiveness because the USB buffer will overflow.

Can anyone verify this?
