Default How to: Use my Gmail account as online storage, part two.

As many of us know, you can use GMail as a personal file server viewable within 'My Computer'. (See FAQ)

An alternative way to use Gmail as file storage, which allows instant access from any computer connected to the internet, is a handy site called XmailHardDrive.com.

This site is a great alternative to the other ways of using Gmail as an online hard drive because it can be accessed online with no need to install anything. It is compatible with any operating system so long as the internet browser can correctly show the page.

The site allows you to upload files onto your 2.7GB (and growing!) Gmail drive just as you would on many file hosting sites. It has a great layout, including the ability to upload multiple files at the same time. The only downside (which happens across the board for Gmail Drive arrangements) is the capping of file sizes. This is done through Gmail, and there is nothing you can really do about it. Last I checked the cap was at 10MB per file. That means you can fit 270 10MB files!

While many question the honesty and security of the site, I have been using it since August 6, 2004 without any problems. If you are truly concerned about getting your GMail account "jacked" by this site, then you may want to start a new account just for file storage. In this day of Gmail accounts o' plenty, getting another invitation is not hard to do.

Basically, XmailHardDrive.com gives you access to your GMail drive through a simple webpage. The biggest benefit is not having to install or download anything onto your computer; it is accessible on almost any computer.
