Default Info: Different processors.

Different Processors:

This is going to be a FAQ on all of the modern CPU’s. Sorry for the ugliness of this faq.

Definitions:
Before I start the faq here are some definitions to some of the terms I will be using, all these definitions either came from me or www.ontrack.com

Socket: When I say for example, socket 478, I mean that there is four hundred and seventy eight pins on the processor.

Intel and AMD: These are both processor making companys.

Prebuilt: A computer that has been build by a company like Dell or Compaq and not custom built.

DDR2: This is a type of ram, the 2 stands for the second generation of it, and the DDR means “Double Data Rate”.

The CPU (processor)
“CPU Stands for Central Processing Unit, a programmable logic device that performs all the instruction, logic, and mathematical processing in a computer.” Definition provided by www.ontrack.com.

Intel Socket 478:
These processors are somewhat outdated but still have use in many prebuilt systems. For example, Dell still used socket 478 processors in most of their systems. Intel is also still making Celeron processors for this socket. There are different types of socket 478 processors, but the main ones are Intel Celeron processors and Intel Pentium 4 processors. The Intel Celeron processors have lower cache then regular Intel processors, the Celeron processors have 128k and now 256k cache. The Intel Pentium 4 and intel extreme processors have 512k cache all the way up to 1mb of cache.

This is the Intel Celeron processor. This is one of the new ones.

This is an Intel Pentium 4 processor with 1mb cache

Intel Socket 775:
Now we will move onto the new Intel socket 775 processor, these processors are much faster then there predecessor the socket 478 and boast many more features, these features include: 64 bit compatible processors, Dual Core compatible processors, DDR2 compatible processors, and a much improved architecture, and all the while still being cheaper. These processors could also handle higher clock speeds and were much cooler. These processors also include the Celeron and Pentium 4 but in addition to that have a Pentium Extreme! processor lineup. Just recently they have also came up with the Pentium D cpu. They range from Pentium D 805 up to Pentium D 965EE (highest number is fastest).

This is an Intel Pentium 4 Extreme processor with 2mb of cache.

The Intel Pentium 4 with 1mb of cache.

The Intel Celeron with 256k cache.

Pentium D 965 Extreme Edition with 4mb cache.

AMD socket 754:
Now were moving on to AMD. Unlike Intel AMD runs at 9 ops per cycle, Intel only runs on six. So what this means is that AMD can run at slower clock speeds and beat Intel’s higher speeds. The AMD socket 754 boasts many feature upgrades over Socket A. The architecture alone is amazingly faster. Unlike Intel AMD goes with different series, like the 2800+, 3000+, 3200+, etc. The socket 754 processors were also the first 64 bit compatible processors. Most AMD processors look the same, so I’m only putting one picture per socket.

AMD 64 3200+

AMD Socket 939:
These are the newest and fastest of the AMD family, they boast new features such as faster clock speeds and cooler processors just like the new Intel’s. This socket also has 2 new series that the socket 754 family didn’t have, it’s called the FX and the Opteron family. The FX family boasted the fastest speeds for processors that are not overclocked and the Opteron’s had amazing overclockability. The socket 939 processors are also capable of dual core. The 939 processors have more SLI motherboards out there also.

Opteron 148 socket 939:

AMD Socket AM2:
Last but not least we have AMD's most current socket out; AM2. Theres not really much difference about these sockets except that most if not all of the motherboards now support DDR2. Currently the AM2's also seem to be faster then there socket 939 prodecessor. These AM2's have 940 pins, thats the same as the server motherboards have.

AMDX2 4800+ socket AM2:

You might want to add that AMDs CPUs is running through a "test" to check their stability, those most stable named "Operton" or the "FX" Series, those not going through that test, with both cores working goes to the "X2" series which basically is like the most Opertons, except most have a smaller cache.
Those with a defunct core, is the single cores, and the really stable ones goes to the single-core series of Opertons.
Those not even going through this process properly, goes directly to the "trash" and gets either rebuilt or just trashed.

Make sure you sandpaper the hole, and then put some U rubber over it to avoid sharp edges. Put some grease around the newly drilled hole, and then screw your computer, screw it hard. Maybe install some UV lights and turn em up to indicate that your computer is also excited.
