The 'very limited shell' problem plagues Knoppix when you have incompatible/slow registering hardware. Is the computer you are trying this on USB 2.0 or 1.1? If it's 1.1, it may take too long to register the USB device, and then somehow... forget that itself exists? =/ One of the popular ways of fixing the limited shell is by using the nodma suffix on the boot parameters. Try using Knoppix instead, see if the problem still happens.

Nah, its 2.0.
Knoppix is too big for my thumbdrive....I only have a 128MB thumb drive; which is why I went with DSL ;) I'll try nodma in a bit. Thanks. :)
