I see a 4 pin molex and a 3 pin motherboard (with one wire), is the motherboard one needed? Is that just for speed control? I want to use these without the need for the icky speed controller, if I just plug in the 4 pin molex, do I get max speed?

Yup. The molex will give you full (noisy) speed. The 3 pin is just a motherboard header for MONITORING fan speed, only way to adjust fan speed is to use the 'icky' controller.

No, not loud for the amount of air it shifts. 'Tis a good fan. I'm just noise paranoid .

I'm thinking I should just go with the FM123 since it can be plugged right into the mobo headers.

If you are wanting to use the 3-pin header, the fan can be modded to eliminate that clunky molex connector.

At max rpm the FM121 is a pretty loud fan, but as already stated, for the amount of cfm you get it is good.

... I love the FM121 fans... just wish they came in black. (only FN121 is black - afaik).

Scythe fans are also very good....

I went with the Scythe Kaze-Jyuni, they were about $5-7 cheaper than the Silverstone for what looks on paper at least to be similar performance.

Silverstone FN121 = Good.
All other Silverstone 120mm fans = Bad.

As for the wires, the Intel CPU fan header is PWM. There is a power, ground, sensor, and control wire. With a standard 3-pin plug, you can only monitor the fan speed.

Adjustable 3-pin fan headers use the voltage to control fan speeds. PWM use the control wire to rapidly pulse the power.

To answer most of your questions: (1) a fridge cannot cool a PC (2) 64-bit OS for over 3.4GB (3) If a PCIe card fits, it should work (4) Resolution, not screen size (5) Report, not respond to Spam (6) Single-Rail/Non-Modular PSUs are not always better than Multi-Rail/Modular (7) Sequential does not matter as much as random for OS drives (8) Requirements come before hardware for servers
