Hello,
I was looking at getting a 5970 that was listed as not working since games either freeze or fragment during play. I am perfectly happy with the performance of my 6750 for games, and was interested in getting this card for the purpose of protein folding (with folding@home) and the occasional bitcoin mining op.
My question is, how will the freezing/fragmenting in game with this card affect the hashrate on bitcoins or my protein folding speed? Is it even releveant to game performance?

I'm guessing by "fragmenting" they are talking about artifacting. Aftifacting means that the card is either unstable or completely ruined. It could possible be fixed by bumping the voltage, but that is a bad solution. I would stay away.

Okay, that makes sense. Thank you for the advice and insight! thumb.gif

I run a 7950 way below the voltages needed for gaming under bitcoin without issue.

At 1200, games need 1.137v. BTC miners take 1.044v.. Maybe it would work for you then?

It's going to be a gamble either way. Is it artifacting because of a lack of voltage to the ASIC? Heat causing stress on the BGA? Electromigration? Bad drivers? Is the fault in the compute area or just the display logic?

Some of these can be taken care of, others not.

Why do we mount round fans on square radiators?

Yeah, that's why I hesitate. Some of those are quite easy to fix or aren't even related to bitcoin, others, not so much. I'll try asking the seller.

I may have actually found a better deal. (or two actually) I have found a 6950 for around $130 or two 5870s for around $150. The only issue with the 5870s is that one causes screen to go black in single or crossfire mode. Im having the seller try with a larger psu, but my question is, which is the better deal? I have a mid tower that "should" fit either configuration without too much moving of components, and I would have to buy a new psu anyway for either one.

All AMD cards suck at folding, lets get that out of the way first thing. I'm not sure about the black screen issue, I would stay away from any non properly working cards.

Okay, thanks. How much is the performance difference between an nvidia card and a radeon card at folding? Why are nvidia cards better, don't radeon have more cores?

FAH has never been optimized for AMD. So while a 6970 might chug along at a stead 10k ppd, a 680 might pull 80k with a bit of work.
