I just upgraded to an APU, A10-5800k. Has Radeon HD 7660D on it. I'm getting a new discrete graphics card with tax return in a few months. But for now I cant really tell if the APU graphics are better then my 5850. I looked through some reviews of each but they are so far out of date range from each other its hard to compare them. Anyone have some input?
The APU would probably be better if you have fast RAM. The on board graphics of the APU work best with 1866+ speed RAM. That said, as long as you have at least 8GB and 1600+ it should be better than the 5850.
Also, why did you get an APU if you plan on buying a discrete graphics card later? While their is some benefit for getting a 7770 and crossfiring, to just use the discrete would be to avoid the biggest draw of the A10.
5850 is significantly more powerful than the 7660D. HWCompare does not list the 7660D, but they do list the HD6670 which is nearly identical to the specs of the 7660D. The 6670 is actually a little more powerful, so when the 5850 completely destroys a 6670 it would be even worse in direct comparison to the 7660D. The major difference is that the HD6670 has about 100 shaders more than the 7660D.
Well I didn't really care about the APU just yet. I got an fm2+ board and I'm waiting for those to be released. This chip will be going in a HTPC build once I do make the change. But thanks for the input, The 5850 dose seem to be better after using both for a bit.
