Hey all, I got a 4870x2 as an upgrade to my HD4870 (for free) is it a decent upgrade? I know the x2 is old, how does it compare to newer cards?

Also, when I got it, it was all dusty and would idle at 90c, so I took the cooler off and cleaned all the dust and thermal paste off and put on a new layer of TX3. It idles at 45c on gpu1 and 51c on gpu2, and in games GPU1 reaches around 78c, and GPU2 reaches 88c (the fan is on 30%). Is that right? I assume GPU2 is 10c hotter due to getting recycled air from GPU1?

I'm pretty sure the 4870x2 is as fast as a 5870 (without DX11 support, and anything else the 5xxx series has). So yes, very good upgrade considering it was free. Here's a chart:

IDLE AT 90c!? WOWOWOWOWOW!

As for your new load temps, those seem about right to me, and yes the second GPU would be hotter due to hot air being vented around it.

IIRC those are pretty normal 4870 temps. If I were you I would up the fan to like %50 to bring the temps under 80

I'd say that's a pretty good upgrade. Those temps aren't bad, especially for 30% fan speed. As for a comparison to other cards, it's still pretty powerful (although lacking DX11). Check out this thread to see how it compares. It's still ranked 10th, not bad for an old card .

Hmmmm. I think 88c with the fan on 30% is normal for a 4870x2. x2 graphics cards were never designed to be cool. They were designed for power, and their thermal output reflects that. Try putting the fans to 50% and maybe it'll drop a few degrees.

Those are actually better temps than I get. I usually idle around 65ish(27% fan speed) and anytime I play a game, it easily hits 90+.

I turn the fan up to 40-45% and it never hits over 80 degrees in heavy gaming.

Yes the 4870X2 is basically comparable to the 5870, with the 5870 having a slight edge and also having DX11.

Ah thanks all Reps all around.

Just wanted to make sure it's okay that GPU2 is 10c hotter than GPU1.

No problem smile.gif yeah, it's completely normal the GPU2 is hotter. It's much like hot the top card is almost always hotter in Crossfire/SLI. Worse air flow.

Yup, GPU2 is almost always the hotter one on Single PCB, Dual GPU cards. Even with newer ones, GPU2 on my 5970 (on air) can be around 6C hotter.
