I have looked at some of the guides to figure out the best way to overclock my machine. I am not an extreme gamer but would like to see what these setups can do as far as pushing the extremes.
Here is my setup:
AMD FX-8320 8 core cpu
Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3 Version 3 with FB bios
Ultra 600 Watt power supply
Gigabyte 6670 HD GPU with 1 Gb of DDR3
20 Gb of RAM with 16 Gb of Corsair Vengeance 1600 MHz CAS 10 and 4 Gb of GSkill 1600 MHz CAS 9
Cooler Master CM 212 Hyper Plus air cooler with push pull fans (on both ends)
Kingston Hyperx 3K 128 Gb SSD as my only drive (for the moment)
I bought this combo and have been playing with some overclocking. The fx8320 seems to be stable at default clock rates and I have not experienced (knock on wood) any strange hangups or BSODs. I played with some overclocking by pushing up the multiplier to 22 and increasing the Vcore to about +0.050. On this mobo, I can go in increments of 0.025 (up and down). It has the NORMAL and AUTO settings for Vcore and multiplier settings.
Normally, when I bumped up the multiplier to 22 and turned off turbo boost, it seemed very stable at 4400 MHz and I was happy. I made minor tweaks to turn off Cool n quiet and disabled HPC. That said, I was blasting Prime 95 on this machine and let it rip for several hours every day for about 3-4 days. The temps hovered around 45-50c on full 100% load and when idle, they were down to about 12-15c. Everything was stable and I found the machine responsive to casual browsing and some other things while Prime 95 was running full bore.
However, I notice when the temperature on the CPU reaches about 38-39c, the speed gets knocked down to 2913 MHz for a microsecond and then its quickly back up to 4420 MHz. At 4420MHz, it stays for a 5-10 second and then takes a quick dive to 2913 MHz and comes straight back up to 4.4 GHz. On the UD3, I have disabled Core Performance Boost (which I believe is a turbo setting that throttles the CPU at load/no load). I don't understand why the CPU takes a momentary dive to 2913 MHz (only this frequency) and then comes right back up. I see the temps are not that bad and the cooling seems adequate considering that the temps at full load is only about 45-50c max.
Can owners of this combination shed some light on why I could be having this momentary dive down and up? Is the voltage sufficient for this? Do I need to change some other setting that I am not aware off? or should I be increasing the voltage up a notch? The Vcore seems to bounce around 1.368-1.476 v because of my Vcore setting (set at +0.050v).
I have read some conflicting comments on UD3 being the source of the problem. Any help is highly appreciated.
